Ok, update time. I have completely transformed my tank. before... after... Bit of a difference! I have wanted to have sand as my substrate for ages now and finally decided to just do it. Glad I did but I never want to go through that again!!! I got my other severum back last night too...

I did for a while, but it was just for extra flow as my external is pretty slow but I got a powerhead to replace it.

Go on ebay and look up all pond solutions external filters. 2000lph is the 1 for me. Can't wait to get 1. There about £70 roughly. Don't know what that is in $$$ but is imagine its roughly the same :good:

I'm pretty much on the same boat as you. I'm looking to upgrade my external filter for 1 that's more powerful. I recently changed from gravel to sand too and its fine with my external. It's only 800lph though. I'm looking for something around 1500lph now. My tank is also 4foot :lol:

An angel will be fine with discus. Pretty sure they live together in the wild. I kept an angel with my discus for years without bother. Rams will be fine too, in fact, they look amazing alongside discus. Your kribs will not be ok in the long run though, they prefer cooler water. In saying that...

Jeez oh! Nightmare material! I've done that with a small pleco before. Took out a piece of bogwood, checked it too, to make sure is wasn't there. Cleaned it, leaving it out the water for about 20 mins. Then my Mrs said "there's something moving on that wood". Sure enough. I am a plonker...

A friend of mine had 1 a years ago, it grew to about 10" or more. It was funny the 1st time it shed its shell. We tried to get it out bit he wouldn't let anyone near it. Was a crazy we crittor. Used to climb up the bogwood to greet you at the lid when it was feeding time.

If you have the patience for them, I would say dwarf gourami's would look nice in that set up. Means you would have all levels of tank covered. Shrimp at the bottom, cardinals mid water and dwarf gourami at the top :good:

No, Malawi cichlids wouldn't be suitable with your current stock. But if you were to look into keeping severum, firemouth or maybe rainbow cichlids, they would be fine with your current stock list. Your right in thinking cichlids are not the most comparable with most plants though. You would...

Well if you want colour, amd your ph is at 8, why not embrace it and go down the Malawi route? The high PH will be to your advantage and they are VERY colourful.

It might not seem that fish are shoaling together because its a smaller tank. Of fish were in a longer tank, say 130ltr for talking sake, of would look more like they were sticking close by 1 an other. But I may be wrong? Bit don't go buying a bigger, "more aggressive fish", it'll no doubt just...

I lived in a 3rd floor flat, made out of council wood and bricks and had 2x 4foot 250ltr tanks, a corner 200ltr tank and a 3foot 180ltr tank and survived to tell the tale :lol: I think you'll be fine.

I think it has huge potential! Loads of nice rooted wood, plants and loads of different shoals of fish. In a tank like that, you would really see the difference in bottom dwellers, mid water and high water swimmers. Wouldn't fancy cleaning it though, especially the bottom.
