    12L (3ish Gallon) Tank Ideas

There are some small fish, such as Dario sp. or Hara sp., that might work in a tank that small, provided that you can maintain the water quality. It's not really advised though.

    Hard water nano stocking ideas?

I think Pristella tetra would work. Seriously fish seems to think you're dimensions are OK, but the minimum allowed. However, I think they would predate the shrimp. I currently have some and they're almost piranha-like when feeding.

    Hard water nano stocking ideas?

Pseudomugil sp. would definitely work. They can tolerate a very wide range of water parameters. They're even advertised as good nano reef fish as they can live in salt water too. Pseudomugil will probably try to eat anything that they can fit in their mouth. Luckily they have small mouths and...

Random fish dying and not sure if i have an aggressive fish

Isn't that too hot for Peppered Cories? Peppered Cories are more of a coldwater fish, able to handle temps down into the 40s. I remember reading an account where wild Peppered cories were found in icy streams (here ->...

    Too Bright?...

Do you have a PAR value for the light? What 5 gallon do you have (I'm assuming it's a kit)? Based of the lumens, you have medium high lighting, and I bet the light is causing the betta to be inactive while they are on. Without live plants, there really is no need for such a bright light. One...

How to introduce new fish to new aquarium?

I would add slowly. None of those fish are known for being territorial (as far as I know). Adding all at once is something you would want to do with a highly territorial fish like cichlids. The best combination would be to add the platies one week then add all the catfish week or two later...

Green Algae - Losing the will to live

What kind of light? Are the Anubias nana the only plants in the tank?

    neon tetra.

Pet stores make money whether your fish live or die. In fact, you could make an argument that it's better for business if your fish don't make it. Some do a better job than others, especially smaller locally-run stores.

    neon tetra.

That pH is fine. I have a shoal of cardinals (similar tetra) in water with a pH of 7.8-8.0 for 2 years and counting. The problem is the ammonia. Red gills are a sign of ammonia poisoning. Do a large (75%+) water change right now. Why did you stock the tank before cycling?

    Serious Algae/Cyanobacteria Problem

I must say, I definitely don't agree with washing the filter in tap water every week. This seems like the exact opposite of what you want to do. You want the beneficial bacteria in your filter to be as healthy as possible so it can eat up the wastes in the tank as fast as possible. You want to...

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

That's true, I did assume. I guess I wanted my point to be that "fake news" can be used to describe manipulative news from either party not just the Democratic party while you had specifically used to describe news with a Democratic bent. You also seemed to think that hospitals and the...

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

"Fake news" is subjective. Conservative media is itself highly biased. Perhaps your worldview has been so bent by your own party's media that some of your "fake news" is real news and you're blind to it. Misinformation is everywhere, just because you're not a "dem" doesn't mean you're immune to...

Whats your favorite tetra and why?

The Congo Tetra is low key the most beautiful aquarium fish. Pictures really don't capture how breathtaking they are. They're like swimming opals and their finnage is fantastic. On a side note, Cardinal Tetras are my least favorite tetra. Their behavior is bland and their marking are actually...

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

Coronavirus and the seasonal flu are not equal. I think this is one of the better visualizations of this. Although the deaths seem the same, the coronavirus "season" has just begun while the flu season has been going on for months. This dramatic increase in deaths has occurred despite the...

    Shell-dwellers

Heres a bit of an update. I found Pseudomugil getrudae at my LFS and I got six. I still haven't been able to find any N. brevis females, and I'm gradually raising the carbonate hardness and pH of the water. I've been having trouble with the N. brevis spitting the pellets I have for him (NLS...

    Shellie spitting pellets

My male Neolamprologus brevis is spitting the sinking pellets I feed him. I've tried NLS 1mm pellets and Xtreme aquatic foods peewee 1.5 mm pellets. He spits both, but I think he eats one or two NLS every once and a while. He eats flake and Hikari micro wafers. I'm assuming that the pellets...

    Fungal Infection?

I've never kept guppies, but 40+ guppies in a 10 gallon sounds wildly excessive. How does the water test? Fungal or bacterial infections are typically due to an unhealthy environment. By all means treat your fish, but they may just get sick again if you don't reduce the stocking.

    Shell-dwellers

I've had no luck finding african water fern locally. Settled for some hornwort and from frogbit from my other tank. The filter is so high flow that the hornwort has formed some kind of gyre. At 100gph the thing really moves the water in the 10 gallon. I got my hands on some Seachem...

    Help with changing water chemistry

50ppm nitrates in tap water sounds like it should violate some water quality regulations! My water supply is 0 ppm for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate Thanks for this info! I probably would've never found it otherwise. Also the "as mg/l calcium carbonate" units in the link I posted above make...

    Help with changing water chemistry

OK, I think I'm starting to understand everything. I used to think KH was a subset of GH, i.e. GH measured KH plus other non-carbonate sources of water hardness. This is wrong. GH is specifically metals (K, Mg, Na, Ca, etc.) which are required by plants to grow properly. KH is specifically...

    Shell-dwellers

OK, I think my first priorities will be to locate some female N. brevis, get proper Tanganyikan buffer for the water, and get some African water fern. If I really can't find female N. brevis then I'll get some blue-eyes or halfbeaks. I'm not sure that I want to fill the tank with 6+ blue eyes...

Oddballs that can live in Tanganyikan water

Hi, I have a single male Neolamprologus brevis in a 10 gal set up to be a shell-dweller species tank. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding a female or two for him. In the mean time, I think he would benefit from having tankmates. The only problem is finding something that could work! I...

    Shell-dwellers

Ok, I'll get some floating plants for the time being. It seems like I should raise my gH and pH more. I'll post in rift lake cichlids to try to figure that out. As far as tankmates go, I think 10 gal is too small for rainbows. I'll consider livebearers or if anyone knows of any oddballs that...

    Help with changing water chemistry

I've been having some trouble matching the water chemistry of Lake Tanganyika. For reference my tap water is 7.8 pH with gH = 4 deg. I've successfully been raising the gH to 11-12ish. The tank has play sand, a bit of crushed coral, and 12ish snail shells. I've also been adding Equilibrium to...

    Shell-dwellers

That's a good suggestion. I think some floated African Water Fern would be perfect at providing a sense of security. I'll try to pick some up tomorrow. Seriously fish seems to think that green panchax would be able to take my alkalinity and hardness (8.0 and 12 deg). So should my water be...

    Shell-dwellers

I've done some researching myself. The general requirements the tankmates need to satisfy are, Non-shoaling (so I don't need a group) Survive in alkaline and hard water Small but sturdy Surface dwelling? (may not be necessary if they can stand up to the N. brevis, it also depends on the actual...

    Shell-dwellers

Yesterday I got fish. Things didn't go exactly according to plans. The store that had the N. brevis last week apparently sold all but a single male. I wanted to get a M/F or M/2F, but with no better option I got the single male. He's totally by himself in the tank and he's very skittish. He...

    Shell-dwellers

I did not see the ammonia or nitrates rise and fall the first time. I got the test kit well after I first dosed the aquarium with ammonia. I have been dosing ammonia since then and I've noticed the ammonia rise and fall with my dosing. I have not seen any nitrites at all though. I've also seen...

    Shell-dwellers

My 10 gallon Shelldweller species tank. The tank has been set up for 3ish weeks. I cycled with Dr. Tim's Ammonia Chloride. According to the water reading, it's nearly ready for fish. The current water params are, pH: 8.0 gH: 12 dH Ammonia: 0-0.25 ppm (I have trouble telling if there is no...

Ways to get rid of home-bred fish

You're right that I should check with the LFS to figure out what kind of demand they have. I'm hoping to be able to do most of these fish with just the two tanks I currently have, a 29 gallon tall and a 10 gallon. The 10 gallon is set up as a shell-dweller tank and the 29 gallon is set up as a...

Ways to get rid of home-bred fish

LFS sounds like the best option. I do not plan on producing large amounts of fish. In fact, I plan of getting the fish, breeding them, giving all fish back to the store, and moving on to the next fish.
