Heres my tank after about a month. Just wanted to show it :)

It's looking good, It will be great to see it in a few months with the plants progression. Keep up the good work :)

Low Ph but is tap water the reason?

IF it helps The Ph in Scotland seems to be fluctuating at the moment, I think there is a lot of stuff coming from the hills into the water supply from all the storms/snow/rain or any permutation of all three. @seangee and @essjay We are quite lucky in Scotland with the water quality. I was in...

Science facts on Ferts,Lights, plants. A MUST SEE CHANNEL!

I know a few people who use round tanks with highly territorial fish ( Tilapia I aquaculture as well) as it stops one fish creating a territory in the corner. If it is the case, biorbs are the least of a fishes worries, think of those poor things in the weird shaped tanks they have sometimes in...

    Storm water?

Anyone else in the UK having some weird water fluctuations because of the storm? My normal water ( Scotland) is ph<7 no nitrates (>5) rather soft and very stable. It's probably the best water I have had in the UK. Tested the tank after a water change (20%) ph had shot up to 7.5, nitrates at...

    Feeding Schedule

Fish really don't need feeding as much as people think they do. that's why it is really easy to overfeed, as Byron says as long as the light is on and they are healthy ( and sometimes if not) they will eat. It is how they grow fish for food really fast, they keep the light on 24hrs and feed...

Stocking your fish emergency medicine cabinet...

It is not nice having ever to do it, I'm sorry. The way you were taught appears to have used some alcohol to dissolve the oil first, The Canadian guidelines say 1 in 9ml for clove oil and I tend to go with that.

Stocking your fish emergency medicine cabinet...

This is an important issue, and a real sticking point for me. There are many people who do not take this issue seriously, and do not deliver the respect that the animals deserve. This is not something that should be done because you want to, for fun or as a first option. This is a last...

Stocking your fish emergency medicine cabinet...

Yes they are referring to that, but the method for creating a stock solution is the same. And all you are doing is overdosing the fish in anaesthetic . You still need to create the 1:10 mix (1ml clove oil to 9 ml ethanol) to then dilute down again into water, it is the volume of stock (1:10)...
  10. The Lumpfish Guy

Stocking your fish emergency medicine cabinet...

Actually if clove oil is to be used it should be mixed with ethanol first before being mixed with water. Clove oil is hydrophobic so will not readily mix with water unless dissolved in a solvent first. warm water will help, but not as effective as ethanol. you need to mix 1ml of clove oil with...

Unless I have missed it being mentioned before, but just be careful of the shelf lives of some of these treatments you might not regularly use.

    Snail surprise in my tank

Well if you want more, maybe go to your LFS and see if they have any better looking ones.
  13. The Lumpfish Guy

    Snail surprise in my tank

So snails will eat biofilms and algae on leave, glass and anything else you will have in the tank. They tend not to eat living plant matter. So you don't need to be too worried about having them in the tank. If you don't want them there for aesthetic reasons then just picking them out when you...

Help me identify these algae and how to get rid of them

As Byron says this is caused by an imbalance in the aquarium somewhere. If you post what Byron asked for on here we can help you dial in any issues. But consider the following; Reducing the "daylight" hours, eg if your light is on for 12 hours reduce this to 10 Increasing you water changes, eg...

    Sustainability in the ornamental trade

I appreciate your point of view but in most cases fisheries are pulling out more fish than they can sustainably do so, and even the best managed fisheries still have a marked impact on the environment and the fish population they are taking from. It is as always a balance between one thing or...

    Rescued puffers acting strange

Yeah, if they are eating, just keep feeding them and keep the water quality good and hopefully they will get better. Small regular portions at this stage might be better than larger feedings until they put on a bit more size

    Diurnal temperature variations

I forgot you're in Berks, I'm up in Glasgow. I imagine we are having the same temperature fun!
  18. The Lumpfish Guy

    Will this work?

Oh when I say small I mean 20L min. Anything below that doesn't exist in my world (or I like to pretend it doesn't. anything smaller is for cultivating plankton, brine shrimp or holding the tears of your enemies

    Sustainability in the ornamental trade

I think you spelt greed wrong... Instead of putting the cost and effort into breeding a fish, take it from the wild and charge the same price....
  21. The Lumpfish Guy

    Will this work?

I would say it is, an air stone will do this just as well. And on small tanks probably not even required at all as the water movement isn't as "necessary" as you'd think, convection from your heater will provide sufficient movement of water in a small system.
  22. The Lumpfish Guy

    Sustainability in the ornamental trade

It is a huge industry, If you work it out by kilo, the average food fish is about $5 a kg and the average ornamental is $20 per kg. I personally don't agree with buying wild caught fish for that reason. Most fish can be raised in captivity now, there is little excuse for us to be taking them...

    Rescued puffers acting strange

Yeah the OP seems to have tried frozen blood worms (can see them in the top picture) if they are eating them then great, if not you're right and probably should try some live (pond snails are great).
  24. The Lumpfish Guy

    Will this work?

I agree with you on the tank size, they should't sell anything smaller than 20L IMO. But with the filter, all a filter does is provide water movement and remove particulates from the water column (but not the system it'self) and if maintained properly an extra surface for bacteria to grow...

    Diurnal temperature variations

Diurnal temperature fluctuations do occur, but obviously the strength of these vary depending on latitude, altitude and type of waterway ect. You even will get a slight one in your aquarium depending on location and house temp especially if you are in Europe at the moment with the heat waves and...

    Sustainability in the ornamental trade

    Will this work?

IMO you don't really need a filter on that tank. It should be fine without it if you are just putting in some small shrimp. Bacteria will colonise on any of the tanks surfaces, not just in the filter, so you can cycle a tank without a filter.
  28. The Lumpfish Guy

    Rescued puffers acting strange

I'm quite lucky mine take bloodworms (frozen) and I offer various snails which I cultivate. I haven't had any so picky as to not take frozen blood worms, but they should be fed some snails because of their teeth.

Research on Bettas From Large Pet Chains

These things happen all the time! I myself work in the same sector, and although my main focus is on aquaculture fish rather than ornamental, there is a huge amount of work which goes into looking into fish. Take salmon for example they can tell which river in the UK a salmon is from just by...

See my issue is this, Nowhere in that text is there any reference to a peer reviewed study (please correct me if they are at the end of the chapters I don't have access to the book). As is the same with many articles on PFK, TFH ect which reference and endless loop of articles over and over...

I'd be interested to see this study if you have the reference Byron? Changing water

Please don't boil your water. If you can post your water test parameters, tank size, number and type of fish. We will be able to help you easier. Most problems are caused by poor water quality, so do a large water change on the tank (75%), but you do not need to boil it.

    Seeking tank stocking advise.

If you are going to try, make sure that the LFS will take it back if they turn out to be not compatible. or make sure you have another tank available.

    Record Keeping

As much as i would love that many tanks, I think I would never have the time to look after them properly.
