    New tank, stocking help pls

Thanks, I had a read of the site, but no link anywhere to this 150% Saltwater (got to love good referencing). What I have found is the salinity of the lagoon in which they were discovered reached 34ppt at a seasonal peak. And interestingly this massive tome...

    Colour of Discus Eggs

Nutrition is a key component in egg quality, so when your fish are laying eggs consider feeding more often and a more varied diet. Eggs require a huge amount of energy and that all has to come from the female, and if the female is not getting enough nutrition, it will come out of here energy...

Overstocking? Tank size vs. filtration capacity

I agree it has it's limitations, as would any model. But It still can be a useful tool IMO

    Antarctic Marine Aquarium

These ones were quite small, Though I did have some larger ones (Glyptonotus antarcticus), I will put them in another post later on.. Not very deep, everything we collected was from above 25m, I would imagine plankton feeder, but not 100% i'm afraid.

    Antarctic Marine Aquarium

The "eyes" are just a trick of the light, its a soft coral. The black stuff is a very thin filament algae, which I used to transport a load of amphipods back to the uk in.

    Antarctic Marine Aquarium

So, I thought I would add another instalment of this section. So this is the transport aquarium As I have mentioned previously, this was used to transport fish and inverts back to the UK from Rothera, It is a refrigerated shipping container, with 6 fish tanks in, and 7 large sump for water...

Hi, Welcome. I look forward seeing how your tanks progress, post pictures when you can!

    Hi

    Nice looking tank :good:

Is 4 gallons enough for 2 dwarf gouramis

As the guys have said above, they really need to be in a 15-20 gallon. If you can't keep them in one maybe consider taking it back to the store or re-homing??

    Swordtail Fry

Quite a helpful tip, anyone who is reading this. I like to keep extra media in all my tanks ( like a small bag of K1 for example). So if I need to quickly cycle a tank, I have extra media I can do this with. It has saved my life a few times!

    Lumpfish eggs

Buy a chiller maybe...... Things on poles so you don't have to get your hands wet. And when you do just grin and suck it up! a good pair of gloves is like gold dust! And because I'm British a good cup of tea to warm up is essential!d:D

Overstocking? Tank size vs. filtration capacity

I like to use Aquadvisor as little tool to help inform my decisions. It's not perfect and I use my judgement on the results, but It can be helpful in preventing from going really wrong. Page seems to be down at the moment though http://www.aqadvisor.com/

Is 4 gallons enough for 2 dwarf gouramis

A bit of advice I was always told, Buy the biggest tank you can realistically maintain and afford. As you already have the fish the sizes the above guys are recommending should be your minimum, but go for the largest you can afford and can keep.

    Hi, Welcome to the forum!

    Lumpfish eggs

Never thought of the pacmans, might have to use that in the future. So the Lumpfish is common in the North Atlantic, and I would say it was a Sub-Arctic species. The males exhibit a huge range of colouration during the mating season ( Red, green, blue, pink orange). They have been fished...

Help! My Goldfish Has A White Growth!

    Lumpfish eggs

Just in case anyone was interested, here is a small batch of my Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) eggs at the eyed stage of development. Eggs are laid in a sticky egg mass, and guarded by the males. They are quite large eggs (about 2-2.5mm in diameter). Females can reach 60cm long and 4+kg in weight...

    Heavy Breathing Betta

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to put down your method of fish keeping, That's the last thing I wanted to do. I can completely see the reasoning behind the way that you do it, and It does make sense. I was merely attempting to say that there was also a perfectly valid argument for Coin_T's...

What is difference between molly, platy, female swordtail

I'm not going to disagree with you on any of your point, and certainly you make quite a compelling argument regarding hybrid species. Just a couple of points if I may: Firstly hybridisation encroaches on our definitions of a species in the first place. The traditional definition of a species is...

    Ro or rodi water

As TDS is measuring everything dissolved in the water as a reading by it'self you cannot really tell much about it. Try taking a reading with the usual testing you might do eg Nitrate, Nitrite, Amonia, Ph Kh Gh ect. This will then be useful in informing your decisions of what is actually going...
  39. The Lumpfish Guy

    Heavy Breathing Betta

I see your point, but have to disagree, you are never going to have a completely sterile tank, there is always going to be some bacteria (viruses, parasites) in which you don't want. So to really prevent diseases you need to reduce stress on the animals, eg keeping at the right temp, lighting...

What is difference between molly, platy, female swordtail

As long as you know it has been done, what really is the problem? I mean we hybridise other fish and animals all the time, just sticking with the fish hobby there are many crossed species (eg flowerhorn). From a species preservation point of view I can see that you would want to keep those...
