if the wood is 100% dead ie dried up completely and not "green" then you give it a good wash with boiling water to kill off any bacteria or spores on the wood then yes you can soak it in tank water til it sinks

hard to tell from that pic for me mate, theres usually a bit of size and shape difference, females are generally rounder and slightly smaller than males. in the jewels that a friend of mine has been breeding his males tend have brighter more vivid markings than the females.

from what ive read mate you are best to dry the wood out for as long as you can, that way it is properly dead and any saps/ resins etc within the wood is totally dried up and wont leach into the water, once the wood is dried up then give it a good wash in boiling water and soak it til it sinks

haha thats similar to me mate, im a spark but my dads a car mechanic to trade (well he was 30yrs ago) and hes a master at everything similar to your old man, it must be a dad thing!! i myself am fairly handy and can turn my hand to most things aswell but i doubt ill ever be as handy as my dad lol

i can confirm this ive got a tetratec Aps50 and its really quiet, it has runner feet which absorb alot of the vibrations. only noise u get off it comes from the bubbles in the tank
