My Harlequin Rasboras are dying one by one- HELP

I watched your video. Nice tank. Where did you get your driftwood? Sometimes items like driftwood in the tank can leach toxins in the tank. I wonder if the water has enough oxygen; you could try an airstone, but I still think the most likely scenario is that they were purchased sick.

My Harlequin Rasboras are dying one by one- HELP

Your nitrate levels look fine to me, just as a sidenote; I wouldn't be concerned about that. Your PH seems a bit low but that's probably not the problem. My guess is that they were sick when you purchased them.

Can I Put Galaxy Rasboras in My Tank?

I would advise against it. Your CPDs will hide and starve in that set-up. Wonderful fish but much better in a species-only tank in my experience.

HELP!! My betta fish has severe black fin rot on his tail and I have no idea how to help him.

You say nitrite and nitrate are steady, but what are the levels? And what about ammonia? I wouldn't recommend 100% water changes by the way, maybe do 80% to preserve more of the beneficial bacteria. Do you have a filter?
  5. hansgruber7

Betta Fin Rot and Catappa Leaves (+wrapping tail around things?)

I wonder if the persistently high nitrates could be harming him. My tap water had high ammonia and nitrates so I ended up buying an RO Buddy and that solved my problem. You could mix the RO water with your tap water.

Thoughts on a Tank with Single African Cichlid?

Thanks. Would a 40 gallon be sufficient for a male peacock and a few females? Should I expect 10-20 young every month or so? How long do they have to grow out before I can offload them? I assume if I don't fish them out, would most get eaten? I know most people don't care, but I hate the...

Thoughts on a Tank with Single African Cichlid?

It's a 40 gallon breeder, so I think 36 by 18 by 36. I would be open to getting a larger tank. I use RO water because my tap water is terrible, and I use Seachem Equilibrium along with Alkaline and Acid Buffers, so I assume I could get the hardness and PH I need. I would love to get a peacock...

Thoughts on a Tank with Single African Cichlid?

I use RO water, so my GH can be whatever I need it to be. Is it because they get lonely or stressed? Are Oscars different in that way somehow? What about a Jack Daniels alone or something like that?

Thoughts on a Tank with Single African Cichlid?

I was thinking of getting a single African cichlid for a 40 gallon tank. I don't want to deal with fry or with fighting or have to get a larger tank, but I love African cichlids. Is this a bad idea?

Betta fin rot and weird white area questions (on the behalf of someone who doesnt have an account)

It will be key to know what the ammonia and nitrite readings are. The fish definitely looks sick to me.

    Plant help

Go with dwarf sagittaria for a carpeting plant. Try java fern or an amazon sword for a mid to background. Maybe some anubias. I like frogbit for a floating plant a lot, but it requires a bit of maintenance.

    adding large quantity of tetras

I would do an immediate large water change and keep doing that daily until nitrites are back to zero personally.
  13. hansgruber7

    Odd Colored RCS

Yes, you can usually make an exchange. Bring some of your shrimp to donate and take some of theirs with the store credit. Obviously you'll have to give a multiple of what you take back, but that should be fine.
  14. hansgruber7

Which group of tetras to get for 30 gallon

I vote Black Neon. Those are great. I know they are super common, but I personally just love the Neon Tetras. I assume you considered those. You could also consider rasbora or danios, right? There are a lot of good options that could work for your set-up.

    Blackwater 55g Build

I love the way the new 55 is coming together. Beautiful.

Betta fish resting more than normal?

I'm so sorry for your loss. This has happened to me a couple of times and it's heart-breaking. I almost gave up the hobby the second time it happened, but I'm glad I stuck with it and learned from my mistakes. From the video you posted at the beginning, it was pretty clear to me he wasn't...

How can I remove this algae

Try to reduce lighting and nutrients if you haven't tried that already. You could test for phosphates and if it's high, put in a phosphate absorber for a while. Phosphates contribute to algae blooms. You could also put in some frogbit or something to soak up some nutrients.

    22 gallon community tank

    Wonderful!
  19. hansgruber7

    10 gallon help!

I would keep a wild betta without tank mates personally. They are likely to eat shrimp and tetras could stress bettas out.
  20. hansgruber7

Betta fish resting more than normal?

I think the best thing you can do at this point is daily water changes and test your water daily for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate to keep tabs on that.
  21. hansgruber7

    Betta Clear Fins?!?!

At the very least, you should fill this tank up to the top, if a real tank with a filter is really not a possibility.
  22. hansgruber7

Betta fish resting more than normal?

From the video it definitely seems like something is off with him; doesn't seem like he's doing well. The way he's breathing is a bad sign too. But it's hard to say what it could be. What kind of sand is that? It seems bright in there, but I doubt that's the problem. Did you change anything...

    Betta has weird splotches

It sound like you're doing everything right as far as I can tell. I would just keep a careful eye on it and if it doesn't grow, it's probably nothing to worry about. If it grows or worsens, you could look into medicines. I had a betta that was slowly deteriorating and I couldn't figure it...

    Betta has weird splotches

It's hard to say what it could be. It might not be a problem, and if you keep an eye on it and it doesn't grow, it might be fine. What are you feeding him? Any tank mates and how big is the tank?
  25. hansgruber7

    Betta doing poorly

What about ammonia? In my experience that's the most common problem for bettas. GH and KH being a bit off probably wouldn't cause this.
  26. hansgruber7

Betta fish resting more than normal?

Hard to say. Are you using the API test kit or some other kit? It's strange that you had an uptick in nitrites. What was the level? What are you feeding him? How big is the tank? Pictures and video would be helpful. I hope you're able to help him. It's so hard when you don't know what...
  27. hansgruber7

    Betta doing poorly

It sounds like dropsy to me; the medication often won't heal that. Is your water quality ok?
  28. hansgruber7

    High Nitrate Levels and Bettas

Hmmmm. Interesting. I do use the Seachem Alkaline Buffer as well and did all the testing and measurements, so that could be why it's working well. Not for everyone, but works for me since tap was not an option for me.
  29. hansgruber7

    Betta Clear Fins?!?!

That's a very small tank and even changing out the water every two days, he's going to get unhealthy in that set-up. He would do much better with a bigger tank and a filter.
  30. hansgruber7

    High Nitrate Levels and Bettas

I second the frogbit recommendation. It has been great for my tanks. Also, I use Seachem Equilibrium with my RO water and it seems to be working well.
  31. hansgruber7

    My Water Source Parameters

I should caution that I am not an expert, but I have been using Seachem Equilibrium and everything seems to be going well for months now.
  32. hansgruber7

    Betta Clear Fins?!?!

If that's his tank, I think you're killing him with poor water conditions.
  33. hansgruber7

    High Nitrate Levels and Bettas

The ideal solution if feasible is to use RO water if you can. Otherwise, plants like frogbit can help.
  34. hansgruber7

    My Water Source Parameters

I had a similar problem except that the ammonia in my water source was much higher than yours (05. ppm). I went with RO and it has been great. My fish are healthier and algae is lower. It's a little tricky to get navigate remineralizing, etc, but it's doable. You just have to do a lot of...

Red Cherry Shrimp - Beginner who doesn't want them to breed

I have RCS in a 5G and it works great. I do take a few dozen to the LFS every few months for store credit just to keep the numbers manageable. But that's how I get my basic supplies for free, so it works out pretty well.
  36. hansgruber7

    Struggling with plants.

I like the Aquarium Co Op root tabs. They have worked pretty well for me.
  37. hansgruber7

    Betta Clear Fins?!?!

Test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. If those get elevated it can stress your fish, make him unhealthy and that can lead to change in color.
  38. hansgruber7

favorite and least favorite things about fish keeping!

If it's working well, go for it. I would love to have a species only Harlequin Rasbora tank someday. I was thinking 15 in a 20G or something like that.
  39. hansgruber7

    Looking for 1-2 fish for a 10g

I think a beautiful betta would be perfect for your tank.
  40. hansgruber7

    Ammonia in tap water

Maybe not an option for you, but I have the same problem with my tap water and I use RO water which has solved my problem.
