    Ich in my community tank

I've noticed several of my female bettas "scratching" against the hairgrass plants. But they've done that the entire time they've been in this tank. Now I'm reading that can be a sign of oncoming ich. That scares me because all of my betta fish do that. It's too late here now to buy fish meds...

Seeding sponge filters in an established tank

*I will not be taking a sponge from this tank at this time, as I just discovered ich in the tank. I've started a new thread for that.

    Ich in my community tank

There’s ich on a betta (female) and a tetra so far, that I’ve seen. I’ve started to raise the temp of the tank slowly. I’ve only gone up one degree so far, because I just noticed it, and I’m gradually going to raise to 86. I can QT the betta but not so sure the tetra will be easy to catch. I...

    cycling with used media

Don't let that filter sponge dry out. Keeping it wet (with tank water) will keep the bacteria colony alive. If it dries out, your colony dies. I'd say let it run with that seeded media and test the water daily until your ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels are all where they need to be. Should...

Seeding sponge filters in an established tank

It's new to me! So if I let this sponge run in the main tank for another few weeks it'll probably be good to start another tank with? And then I can start seeding another? So happy I discovered sponge filters :)

Seeding sponge filters in an established tank

I have an established 30 gallon tank that has a standard Hang-On-Back filter. I used to run an air stone in this tank, but I have since opted for secondary filtration, and now I use a sponge filter *instead of* an air stone. They both bubble and oxygenate the water, so why not? It's additional...

Newbie - Help me stock my 20 gallon tank! :)

At 20 gallons, I would say do no more than 15 inches of fish, just to make sure everyone has enough room. 9 tetras and 6 corys should do it. YES!!! This is very important. Before you add any fish, you need to cycle the tank. Cycling the tank could take 4-6 weeks. That's how long it takes for a...

Newbie - Help me stock my 20 gallon tank! :)

I agree, corydoras, and tetras. I'd also suggest adding some shrimp or snails. Stay away from the livebearers like platys and guppies, unless you're prepared for your 2 year old daughter to watch a mother fish eat it's own babies.

Newbie - Help me stock my 20 gallon tank! :)

Really, it just depends on what you like. Are you looking for small species? Cichlids? Shoaling? Bright colors? Long flowy tails? Are there any particular fish that you really want to have? Maybe if you pick out the "feature" fish, we can help pick out tank mates.

I got a new aquarium stand

If it were particle board I might agree. It's solid wood, though. You didn't see the cast iron stand in person. It was not stable. It wasn't even passing for stable. EDIT: Correction, the old stand isn't cast iron, it's painted metal.

I got a new aquarium stand

The stand that came with this Craigslist fish tank is rickety and wobbly and it’s a miracle it can hold a 30 gallon tank. When I picked it up after moving the aquarium to the new stand, one of the legs fell off it. So I guess I replaced it just in time. It literally wobbled when I walked by. My...

    Normally social cories now hiding...

What about tank mates? Some fish may be fine with their tank mates for a really long time, and then suddenly not be fine anymore. The corys might be getting picked on. What do you have in the tank with them?

    My 64L tank (14 gallons)

It’ll be full for sure. But it’s better than adding another entire shoaling species. Just add the fish you need to complete your existing shoals, no more. If you can save up for a bigger tank then when you eventually get it (and cycle it) you can move everyone into it and add some harlequins.

Hello, First try at a small tank – 7 gallons

This is what happens to hairgrass that doesn’t get enough UV light. (See picture) I know you’re not doing a black water tank, but you might want to look into what plants do well in black water tanks because those are low-light conditions. I’m not really an expert botanist though. I have plants...

Hello, First try at a small tank – 7 gallons

It depends on the plants, honestly. I've had some plants do exceptionally well with LEDs. I've had others die within a week. It sounds to me like you're going to have to look for plants that do well without UV light. I've had a lot of luck with Java Fern, personally. Welcome to the forum!

    My 64L tank (14 gallons)

You *do* need to add the 2 more neons, as they are a shoaling species and need to be in a group of at least 6. But same goes for the panda corys. You need to have at least 6 of those as well. Once you bring the neons and corys up to 6 each, I think your tank will be full, and you won't have...

    Considering an axolotl

I understand bigger is better @Colin_T and @NickAu. That is the case no matter what kind of animal. My dilemma is the price difference between a 10 gallon and 20 gallon tank. I can get a 5 gallon tank for $25. I can get a 10 gallon tank for $30. But the next step up, 20 gallons, is closer to...

    Beginner how-to: Tiny Tanks

Most people's first fish tank is small, usually 5 US gallons (19 liters) or less. It is far too common that people will buy a 1 gallon, or 3 gallon, or 5 gallon tank, and then find out later they have stocked it with the wrong kind of fish, or too many fish, or a bad mix of fish. So I wanted to...

    Betta fin rot treatment

I've recently been told that aquarium salt does more to make the fishkeeper feel like they did something than it does to actually help the fish. And if you're changing 100% of the water, regularly, after adding salt, think about it... the salt is going bye-bye when you change the water. It's...

    Considering an axolotl

I've been mulling over the idea of getting one or two axolotl for a while now. It's an idea I keep coming back to. So I think I'm going to give it a go. I know I need to cycle a tank for them first, and that's fine, affordable 10 gallon tanks are everywhere these days. But I have some questions...

    Betta Sorority 30 Gallon Journal

Especially when you buy them from cups in the pet store, I'm thinking. The new girl is going to come from the fish store I got my kuhli loaches from, I think. I'll take your advice, though, and wait a week or 2. That sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

Fish freak out when you walk past the tank?

    Betta Sorority 30 Gallon Journal

Sad news. One of the females has died. :( I came home from work today, took the dog outside, and then grabbed blood worms from the freezer and some tweezers and started my tank walkthrough. When I go to the sorority tank, I noticed little Lucy, the red veiltail, was nowhere to be found. All...

My dog is jealous of my bettas

Y'all with cats got me jealous now. My pup has no interest in the fish. Won't even look at the tank. Follows me around while I feed the fish, but doesn't acknowledge the fish or the tanks, just looks at me the whole time. And if I talk to the fish, she starts whining. "No, don't talk to the...
