How to keep tank warm if power goes out in winter storm

If the power goes out, my basement will flood thus no hot water. I would use the gas stove to heat up water in a large pot, set the pot near my tank. I have a tiny pump with a long hose attached, recirculation aquarium water thru the hot water. Of course, put blankets over the tanks.

How to keep tank warm if power goes out in winter storm

Very confused, why can't you start a generator in the rain?

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

I would never own a rear wheel drive car where I live, front wheel drive makes a huge difference in snow. I live in a metro area which averages 100 inches of snow/year, no need for 4 wheel drive, front wheel is all I need.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

I have done it on my street to reach a main road (3/4 mile) in a front wheel car, just don't stop until your reach a plowed road! I have never driven any distance in 8" of fresh snow, other cars/trucks have made a path. Last night storm made a northern turn and we only got 6", it stop snowing...

    Canisters or sump??

Same here, I would love to share some ideas. Being snowed in, that's on my agenda tomorrow. I plan to write something up tomorrow and post it in the tank journals.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

I took a vacation out there, it is so beautiful out there. It really wasn't the dreary winters, I love the warm summers sailing on Lake Ontario.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Before I got married, I was thinking about moving to Seattle. But those winters with drizzly everyday seem depressing. On the other hand, we get about the same amount of sunshine that Seattle gets, our winter suck....

    Canisters or sump??

The plan for my sump filter, it will be used for a 20, 29 and 75 gallon tanks, so much room for expansion. However, I may start work on a 75 gallon Mbuna tank. My LFS sells 75 gallon framed tanks for $100, thats cheap Of course, Mrs Mad is unaware of these plans. Today she was wondering why am...

    Canisters or sump??

Understood. That's why I said to be fair. There has been big improvement in canister filters in the past 20 years. I would not recommend a freshwater sump filter to anyone, buy a canister. But I love mine, I enjoyed the challenge of building it and it is working great.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Strange thing about major snow storms here in western New York, everyone complains about the snow but everyone seems so happy when the big snow falls hit (of course, when they finally get home from work). Now personally I would rather be in Key West, Florida right now, 82 degrees and sunny. But...

    Too hot?

I was one of those "do things in excess" kind of Dads, one year I converted our attic into gameroom. It even had a 1957 Sinbad pinball machine! So instead of a minimum size, the maximum size I would recommend is the 29 gallon tank, a standard size in the USA. That would be 109 litres, 76cm x...

    Canisters or sump??

For the record, I like my sump filter. To be fair, the last canister filter I owned (20+ years ago) did not have disconnects values on the lines and was not self-siphoning. It was a pain in the a** to clean. If I bought a canister filter for a big tank, I would still try a DIY internal overflow...

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

My first job out of college was in Jackson, TN. The pipes froze up during one cold snap and I spent 1/2 the day searching for the hot water heater! Finally I look in the attic, yep there it was.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Understand we got the equipment to handle the snow, we average 100"/year. The hardest part will be getting out of the driveway. We always back the cars in before a big storm, luckily my long driveway slopes down toward the street.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Good Luck. We have 8-14" of snow predicted for my area starting this evening. It will be a hellish commute Tuesday morning, luckily I have the day off.

    Too hot?

Long term, I think the aquarium project with your daughter will be a positive experience with a larger tank. The Biorb Halo 15 litre tank will end up very frustrating ie: nope, can't have that fish...

    Jellyfish?

Luckily for me, a new glass framed 75 gallon tank was cheaper to buy ($100) than to make! No DIY on that one. I don't think this is viable but they do make 6" Clear Schedule 40 PVC Pipe - 5 ft ($246)

    22 gallon community tank

I want the colors so its a German Ram for me. The plan was to connect the 29 gallon tank to an existing sump filter, current water temps 25.5°C (78°F). I have the option of dedicated filter for this tank so I can raise the temps. Hope the Rams is OK.

    22 gallon community tank

I been hesitant on setting up a 29 gallon Blue Ram tank, the expert advice (including seriouslyfish.com) say you they need temperature: 27 – 30 °C (80-86°F) and pH: 4.0 – 7.0. Yet your Ram seem to being doing quite well in water similar to mine (pH 7.6 GH 110). I assume your water temperature is...

    Jellyfish?

Understood. My curse, sometimes I should just buy it instead of DIY. The tank found my Mr. eatyourpeas sounds like an excellent solution. FYI, if still interest in my idea ie: make 1/2 of a cylinder inside an glass tank. Thin acrylic sheet from Home depot can be cut by scoring it with a razor...

    Jellyfish?

If you had a 20 gallon, frameless on the top. Cut a sheet of 1/4" PVC (or acrylic) to the width of the tank, put it in the oven around 200-250F. Once heated, remove from oven and wrap it around a bucket. Make 2 curved piece, paint them and glue them in the tank. For the pump/filter, put...

    Jellyfish?

Thanks, I should have been more clear. I was thinking about the Jelly tanks which create the circular flow. If I was going to do a saltwater tank, it would most like be a 16 or 32 gallon Biocube with an anemone and clown fish(s). Very minimal. Mark

Anyone running a sump for their Freshwater?

I just setup up a 75 gallon tank with a sump. I have no desire for a large saltwater tank, adding a protein skimmer was not an issue. From another project, I had sheets of PVC left over so I made my own sump. I would not recommend doing this, just buy an glass aquarium during the $1/gallon...

    Jellyfish?

Would an air operated undergravel filter just pull the jellies down to the gravel? Same issue with a sponge filter. When you feed them, the filters could just suck the food into it. I thought the beauty of Jellyfish is to create the "lava lamp" effect with them ie: just freely floating in...

    Jellyfish?

I enjoyed this review on youtube, Do you really want a pet Jellyfish? His comment "this is a pet that give nothing back" struck a cord, they are just 'bags' floating around the tank. Now if you could just setup a 20 gallon tank, it would be a fun project. But these guys require a special tank...

How to divide a 29 Biocube tank? (Turned into a freshwater tank)

typically you put a small water pump inside the internal filter with some foam filter blocks, no matter.. Home Depot sells thin acrylic sheet, score it using a straight edge and razor blade, it should easily break into 2 pieces. Typically they use Weld-on 4 for acrylic, this will chemically...

Beginner to fish keeping: cycling questions

I would stop thinking in terms of a schedule. What I did, raise the ammonia levels to 3-4 ppm then wait until it drops to near zero, added ammonia a second time, 3-4ppm, and waited until it drop to zero. I never saw any significant levels of nitrite which is expected. My nitrate level were low...
  39. madmark285

Beginner to fish keeping: cycling questions

Yes. What needs to be determine, ammonia levels. If the nitrates came from ammonia, that good as your tank may be cycled. If it came from your tap water, your tank may not have cycled and you have high ammonia levels.

Beginner to fish keeping: cycling questions

I hope this is right, No2-nitrite, No3 is Nitrate. Can you do an ammonia test? If you added bacteria and ammonia to the tank, you should be able to see the ammonia levels drop followed by a rise in Nitrates. You may not see any nitrites since the bacteria you added is consuming it as its being...
