Fish you just dont expect to see in your LFS

The Small, family owned LFS has had Archerfish, Scats and Mono Argentus. It is always fun to look as she seems to have some very interesting fish on a semi regular basis. The bulk of my collection has come from her and she buys the fry I have for a good price. Plus, she is very knowledgable and...

Pet Store Employee Berated for Giving Good Advice

In regards to any animal, some people only hear what they want to hear, then when met with opposing information they become combative. We see it a lot in Vet Med and I can only imagine it is worse for people working in animal retail. I feel for this employee, it can be difficult to come by an...

    What are these little fish?!?

Yep, yep they are🤣. I guess I didn't realize I would get something other than N. Palmeri as it was invoiced as. The "other" emperor tetra. I can't say I am mad but was not expecting to have two different Emperors. These are new to me, but they sound like they will get on with the Palmeri swimmingly.

    Electric Blue Acara advice…55 Gallon

My EBAs get on with everyone, though they are in a 150g and a 180 gallon tank. Between the two tanks they are with Sevs, Geophagus, a "16 BGK, Firemouths, Keyholes and bristlenose. As far as aggression during spawning they are pretty chill for Cichlids, if they spawn in the "comminuty" tank...

    What are these little fish?!?

So, I bought these guys from an online store, not the typical one I use but another since my "go to" was sold out of Nematobrycon palmeri (emperor tetra). They were itty bitty when they arrived, put them straight into QT and now after a month they are making a jail break to live with the shoal...

For you, which are the easiest to breed in captivity aquarium fish species (freshwater & brackish)?

Bristlenose plecs, I would have to beg them not to do it. Every Month, dang near to the day, there would be eggs. My male has a new lady and it doesn't seem like anything has changed except the batches are 3x that of the original female. Luckily, I know a Family owned LFS and I sell to them...

Dropped my betta fish on floor!

We had a cat growing up who hooked a 14" koi out of the kiddie pool while we were doing pond maintenance. She tossed him across the deck, my brother and I had a heck of a time catching him before he fell off the deck edge. The koi was fine but for some scuffs, he is 21 years old now.

    Was away for a week....

This method works well. I even label which tank they go to and never have had any issues with anyone who has fed them while on vacation. It might be 9 containers but it keeps everything sorted, plus I can vary what they are fed day to day while away.

What are some fun quirks of your fish?

I don't know, my fish could care less if I was a bug, they still come out to get a nibble when my arm goes in the tank. Must be all that Rapashi Soylent Green, turning them on to the flavor of people!🤣 It is surprising how hard an Emperor tetra can bite with that bitty mouth. It is like...

Fish (& other animals) know when its time to go

It sounds like she had a very good life and was lucky to pass at home without any intervention. She was much loved and it would be one of the best ways to go, to fall asleep in the sun. I believe a lot of people hope that pets pass in their sleep, but like with people, that is not always the...

Fish (& other animals) know when its time to go

They do. What is difficult though for people is the ability to read those signs. I have seen many animals in their last moments, more times than not, long past due. They look so miserable and are often in poor condition. Quality of life involves more good days than bad, older animals will have...

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

You can, but with the size of tank I don't think you will need more than one with how large it will grow. If you plan to trim them up and keep them compact then a couple more wouldn't hurt.

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

I had one come without leaves at all, it took a week for it to get 5 tiny leaves on it and then it exploded, growing to about 5 inches high in 3 weeks. I had another that came with a few tiny leaves, it was about 8 inches high in 3 weeks. You do not need to plant it at all it you do not want to...

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

I really like them. Make sure the bulb is firm, it may or may not have leaves, which if fine as long as the bulb is firm. Only plant the bulb 1/3 of its height in the substrate, or it will rot. They get large, and when happy will propagate a lot. One plant should do, keep plants from being in...

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

You can grow Tiger lotus without iron supplementation and it would tend to lean more green with perhaps some red streaks or bronze tones, it will suck out any and all iron your water might have. It just will not be a dark rich red. Dwarf water lilies are greener but will bronze if the light is...

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

All red plants love iron. Tiger lotus as well as many floating plants draw from the water column more so than the substrate. For that matter so do Anubias and Javas, that's why you can stuff them in a crevice and they are good with it. I have a lot of plants, like an ungodly amount. Many of them...

    Mini Dream Tank Re-scape

I feel this, my husband gets bent out of shape because I get bored and change things up at least 2 times a year. I feel the fish are used to it by now, like "Here she comes, she is looking stuff over for too long, she is going to move ^$&# again". I am really digging Tiger lotus right now. They...

Current vehicle: Kia Sedona 2020, hubs drives the 2016 Kia Sorento that I used to drive after we got rid of the 2012 ford focus hot hatch. Amazon sword questions...

So this is a Red melon sword I got from a friend. With roots like these, a sword should easily be planted without weights. If you have any pebbles that can help weight it down if your substrate is not deep enough to hold.

    Amazon sword questions...

These are the ones I use. If it has a good root system it should be able to be simply planted. If it is sparse on roots but heavy on leaves, you'll need to weight it. Do not bury the crown however or the plant will rot.

    Amazon sword questions...

I love amazons! I have several variety. They grow quite tall under the right light and with ferts. You do need to fertilize as they can be quite greedy, more so for nutrients beyond what fish poop can supply. Straight off, they do not tolerate copper, at all. They will melt back pretty quickly...

    Seachem Purigen for tannins, questions.

I found a few pieces of Ghost wood that I want to use. They have been soaking for a week now, one sunk, the other nearly there. Who is mauling my angelfish or is it a disease ?

Angel fish can be jerks, worse than any other Cichlid I have kept before. I had a group of 7, they were a cantankerous bunch, if I could keep a single pair I think that would be ok, but a group, nope. I finally gave up and got rid of them. It is too stressful to try to keep them from ganging up...

    No filter? No kidding

I know the feeling, but I am a grown woman!:lol:The family and I were driving back from town when I saw a few tanks set out on a picnic table, they were dirt cheap and looked in pretty good shape. My Personal Best Photographs...

Your pictures are lovely! I like the frog with the lightning bugs, it is too funny. I don't get time to take photos like I used to, mostly kids and pets. These are some of my favorite pictures of dogs we have, one has recently passed, the other is too old to chase bubbles like he used to.
