What live foods can I culture in a 2.5-gallon tank?

Scuds would do well in a freshwater tiny tank like that. You could get away without a heater or a filter with the amphipods. Baby brine shrimp is another great food for conditioning angelfish, but you would need a bubbler/filter for them and it would require some salinity in your water.

    Opinions on neon tetras

I love neons and plan to breed them this summer in small black water containers on my sun porch. I keep 8 of them in my 30 gallon long. I would love to have 50 of them swimming around my tank.

Completed tank setup of my betta fish... Names needed too

I’ll bet he loves his new home. For names, how about Soldier Boy or Trooper - since it looked like he went through Hell and was in such bad shape in the beginning.

    Rabbit snails

Beautiful rabbits snails. I love the color on their shells. They must be dark colored flesh too. I don’t blame you for buying those. I think I would’ve if I saw them also.

Let’s see some pics of your new find. I’ve never kept a rabbit snail, but maybe I should consider one.

Trying something new - Low-tech Nano tank

Yes, they can grow without soil, but you will need to either mist them or add a small amount of water into their little ”cups”, that center indentation of the plant.

Considering Scuds In Your Fish Aquarium?

Scuds In Your Aquarium - Why We Love Scuds I came across this video while poking around online last night. This guy has kept scuds for a long time and he talks about the pros and cons. I love scuds too and always hope to have them in my fish aquariums. Have kept them for almost 20 years...

Trying something new - Low-tech Nano tank

Nice plants too! I’m excited for your project and look forward to seeing what you end up doing with it. See if you can identify the bromeliad plants that you have and determine their full grown size and pick the one(s) you think will work best with your vision.

Trying something new - Low-tech Nano tank

These are gorgeous and I would enjoy looking into them for hours. If you are thinking of having moss covered driftwood above the water, you could do that. Check out Christmas moss, flame moss, and Taiwan moss. They can grow above water. Some people actually blend up the moss and “paint” it...

    Show me your cube tanks!!

Just popping in to show a picture of my 3 gallon shrimp tank, home to 9 female tiger shrimp (wish I had a male), and 4 ramshorn snails. It’s weird as the filter box is clear like glass, so you can see the ceramic and filter floss if you look. I try to block the filter with that bolbitis and I...

    What type of fish?

I just happened to be on Dan's Fish looking at available cories and came across a Rose Line Barb. That is what your picture looks like to me. That is probably another name for what the others suggested above.

    What type of fish?

They kind of look like a pencil fish of some sort to me.

    Snob Betta ?!?

Amphipods are very easy to breed and maintain a colony, especially if you keep it separate from your fish tank. They don’t need anything special. I keep a whole bunch of separate colonies in jars of green water, that I keep on my window ledge. Just in case I have a colony crash. I always have...

    Is my betta underweight

What a beautiful betta, my favorite color for a betta too. I can see how he does look a little thin from above. If he is eating everything you are providing, he definitely seems to be receiving enough food. In fact, I would probably only give him 2 or 3 pellets, one at a time throughout the...

    Snob Betta ?!?

I think that is the type of food he probably eats the most of in the wild, if given a choice he would fill up on tiny crustaceans, worms and larvae. Freeze dried or frozen should be fine. If it were me, besides the blood worms and baby brine shrimp, I’d toss in live food such as amphipods and...

Adding fish to an established tank

The gourami will hang out towards the top while the neons hang out towards the middle and bottom. I have neons in my library and I have embers in my basement. My embers all seem to hang out in the huge java fern (not a biotope, I know GaryE :)) and only swim around at feeding time. When the...

Does anybody keep kuhli loaches and corydoras together?

I never cared for kuhlis either until I bought a used aquarium that came with 4 of them. I enjoy them when I see them now, but if they weren’t there I’d for sure add some cories. I’ve kept cories for 20+ years and will probably always have some as long as I still have aquariums. My cory...

Black Beard Algae on Windelov Fern

I’ve got Siamese algae eaters in my two largest tanks, along with nerite snails in both tanks. I have several amphipod colonies, some in green water jars and some in my 5.5 gallon shrimp tank and they do an excellent job eliminating algae too. In fact, I intentionally grow hair algae in my...

    I'm thinking of a multi-tank rack...

I think if you can find something you like and it saves space and helps you keep more than one tank, go for it. I don’t have anything like these in my house. I have two medium sized tanks on their own aquarium stand with storage underneath and two nano tanks each on their own table, both with...

    Hi

Welcome Debra. I think your Dad would smile to see you enjoying his fish. What a way to break into the hobby…..with 9 tanks to start. It may seem overwhelming when it comes time to do the water changes though with so many tanks. I hope it doesn’t discourage you in your new hobby. If your...

Where, o' Where, Are You Tonight?

I am always trying to count my aquarium inhabitants also. The shrimp, I’ll never see them all at once. The ember tetras, 16 of them, have to add some food and then take a photo to get a count. Rarely ever see more than 14 at a time. My other tank with 10 neons, I will never see all of them...

Does anybody keep kuhli loaches and corydoras together?

You might get away with feeding the kuhll loaches at night when lights are out and making sure to drop a pellet in for the cories during the day. I have both, but in separate tanks. If you kept a colony of amphipods in the aquarium too, not only would things stay clean but you might also end...

    I succumbed

From what I understand, bettas develop their labyrinth organ as they get older as it isn’t functional when they are young. I would bet they would appreciate being able to grab extra air from the surface when they build a nest. They can stay alive out of water for a short amount of time too due...

anyone else have African water lettuce???

I have some dwarf water lettuce. This is my second attempt at keeping it. Mine turned a little yellow the first time and just didn’t seem to thrive. Either too low nitrates or too high light. I’ve adjusted the light down and sometimes just leave the light off altogether. My aquarium is open...

    New owner of tropical fish

If you can transfer over any of the wet gravel from an existing established tank off your Dad’s, that would definitely help your new tank to get cycled quickly. Also bring over an existing filter and keep all of the filter floss damp, along with the substrate/gravel, keep all of it wet. If the...

Black Beard Algae on Windelov Fern

Last month I picked up a couple of java ferns, each in a ball of moss from a big box pet store. Today I notice the beautiful tips of the windelov adorned with black beard algae. So I pulled them out immediately and put them in a tall 32 oz container. While it was out of the water and out of...

    Gravel vacuum for mini aquarium

Thank you everyone for giving me ideas and suggesting various gravel vacuums. I’m going to stop by a couple of pet stores today and see what they’ve got off the shelf. I’m sure I could make $1 million if I could come up with a wonderful gravel vacuum for a mini aquarium. I appreciate...

Notes from a 60 tank fishroom.

I’m stuck on Gary mentioning the aquarium channel on TV. I got rid of my TV 25 years ago, but I’m not sure I want to miss out on the aquarium channel. LOL. I like the sound of Gary’s separate fish building. It sounds like me with my separate parrot house. I do have that house hooked up to a...
