Personally I think this probably is the same as the often seen lumbs on the mouth of neons but now an internal one. The general thought / agreement is these might be viral cause it is untreatable, not that lethal and quite species specific .

Question is if those elements and bugs are a risk for a tank. I think we should sterilize everything coming out of a tank and is put outside. Joking a bit of course but I think we should be less afraid for the nature outside. What we SHOULD worry about is pesticides etc... human risks.

Allmost in all cases in which fish show differently behaviour than expected / agression we humans made the mistake. Or our expectance was the wrong one or we didn't provide the right conditions.

Only option is to give it more than one female, but it is taking a risk. This is why I don't like keeping fish single for some time. They really get asocial and frustrated with sometimes these consequences as result. I don't like the idea of euthanising a healty fish.

These fish moved house a few months ago. Soon they've to move again.
