    Need help with my Betta.

How long have you had your betta? Is this a new behaviour for him? They do breathe from the surface, is the rest of his behaviour normal? Does he seem bloated? Also I'm sure someone will ask for your water parameters if you can post them as well.

Moved my 5G to my workstation, would love to hear your opinions on the new layout!

That's a cool setup, not sure how much work I'd get done if I was next to a tank, I'd spend all day looking at it instead haha.

    Stocking a 180 litre tank

Thats a good sized tank so you have more options. What is the hardness of your water? That will dictate what fish would be a good fit.

So this is what I'm working with...

I can see from your other post that you've got lots of experience, but just wondering whether the substrate may have contributed to your deaths, I know active substrates have mixed reviews because of the way they can leech into the water column. I'm just theorising though, could be completely off!

Does this look like a healthy tank?

Looks good from the pictures! Sometimes new plants do go through a melt so that may be what you're experiencing. Do you test your water parameters? As you have floating plants some liquid fertiliser may be good to have on hand as well.

Betta and oto with wounds? Or is this bacterial

Female bettas could still fight, female sororities are a tricky one to make work and usually needs lots of bettas with lots of space. As @WhistlingBadger said two bettas in a 20 gallon are going to come to blows in all likelihood.

Better on the fish, or the aquarium cycle, to feed at 1st light, or last light???

Hmmm interesting point to raise! I feed based on what works best for my schedule. Fish get fed in the morning while I'm having my coffee/doing some admin and can sit and watch them (around this time of day as I write). Frogs get fed in the evening as they're more nocturnal and I also have a bit...

    Blue Ram Hiding

Do you have the readings for your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? How big is your tank and what fish do you have left in it now? Did you add them all at the same time or gradually? Did you cycle the tank first or add the fish straight after setup? Gourami and betta shouldn't be housed together...

    Hello

Welcome! The fish you choose will depend on your water hardness if you know it. Re the bettas, imo there's a lot of mixed advice out there but they should ideally be kept alone with no tankmates (I know lots of people do put them in community tanks but it can end badly). Especially male and...

    Angel Fish disease

Your tank sounds like it is overstocked even for one angelfish, they need much more space than 30 litres. Without knowing your parameters we can't say if water quality if contributing but you can try large daily water changes to see if that helps. I'm afraid you really need to get a much bigger...

    Test kits (Alternatives to API)

API sell all of those individually, I just ran out of ammonia tests yesterday so ordered that one to go in the master kit. I have nowhere near as much experience as someone like @GaryE (maybe one day!) so have found the tests to be helpful, especially when first stocking a new tank to help...

    Test kits (Alternatives to API)

Not sure about those specific brands but years ago I used strips and the results used to bleed into one another so it was almost impossible to get an accurate reading. I've no idea why the API one is so expensive in Australia but it's definitely worth shelling out for. It lasts ages as well, or...

    Betta Fish Illness?

Thats a very good age for a betta. No real advice other than perhaps try lowering the water so he doesn't have to swim so far to take a gulp of air and see if that helps. He looks in good condition from the picture so it may just be old age, but he's clearly been well cared for!

Death of Cory (possibly two) advice

What were your parameters in the old tank? My first port of call if I'm unsure of something is to check parameters - may not have been anything you could've done but it may give an idea. May also be worth testing the new tank to be sure the parameters in there are okay too, new tanks can need...

    Nitrite in established tank

Thanks. Annoyed at myself and the amount of water I'm wasting but would rather get it done than leave it! Hopefully won't be too long before it's back to normal.

    Nitrite in established tank

29g set up for 6-7 months. Home to 9 cories, 12ish pygmy cories, 4 ADF's. Not heavily planted but reasonably so. Added some extra java fern on 17/12 bur other than that no recent changes. Sand substrate. Water change routine of 60-70% change every 8/9 days. Usually ammonia, nitrite and nitrate...

Take the bubble nest as a good sign! My new betta made one a few days ago but I ruined it with a water change and he hasn't done one since lol.

Does "Bottled" Bacteria Really Help Cycling?

That would make sense! It never gets above .5ppm thankfully. Just keeping on top of it.

Does "Bottled" Bacteria Really Help Cycling?

Yes I was just re-reading my post and realised that clearly me adding the bacteria wasn't completely successful as I've got the nitrite readings in the past few days, and have had the betta in there for 2 weeks now. It was an interesting experiment and something I'd consider again as a booster...

My ADF's side by side comparison

Managed to get all my ADF's together while feeding today and took a picture to show the size difference between them all. All purchased at the same time so I assume are the same age, and were all teeny when I got them 6ish months ago, but the lightest one is probably twice the size of all the...

    My new 5 gallon

Thanks, he seems happy so far! Gave him some bloodworms as a treat and he practically attacked the pipette I used 💀 I stick to simple plants as am not very experienced (plus if I kill them it's not too expensive to get more!)

Does "Bottled" Bacteria Really Help Cycling?

I got rid of my notes now but it was showing cycled in about 3 weeks. I didn't follow scientific method for adding ammonia, I just added fish food. Funnily enough I added a few more drops with a water change yesterday as I've had some nitrite readings again in the past few days, and no nitrite...

    My new 5 gallon

Added a few drops of API Quick Start that I had left over when I did yesterday's water change, today nitrite is testing 0. Not sure if it's a coincidence but I'm not complaining. Will keep up with daily testing/water changes until things really settle down.

Does "Bottled" Bacteria Really Help Cycling?

Purely anecdotal but I recently set up a new tank and bought a small bottle of API quick Start. I just wanted to see what happened, I've never used a bottled bacteria before and it cost about £2 for the smallest bottle so I thought why not. It definitely kick started my cycle way quicker than I...

    My new 5 gallon

Tested again this evening and nitrite seemed to have dropped, I would say it was closer to 0.25ppm (stupid me didn't take a picture though). I checked the filter and there's a small buildup of gunk. Didn't clean it as it's been running for about 2 weeks so I don't want to take all the beneficial...

    Cory hiding, acting strange

Sorry he's passed :( sometimes these things can just happen, maybe it was his time. Perhaps do a precautionary water change and keep a close eye on the test for the time being.

    Cory hiding, acting strange

Have you had your cories a long time? It may be that if there's no other obvious illness among the others that this one may be coming to the end of his life. Are there any obvious signs of injury? I tend to agree that it might be more stressful to move him. Hopefully someone can give some ideas.

    My new 5 gallon

Thanks! Nitrites are taking off too unfortunately, testing 0.5ppm this morning!
  34. L

    My new 5 gallon

Got a bit of new tank syndrome going on. Ammonia is 0 but nitrite is testing about 0.25ppm, nitrate 10ppm. Big daily water changes the last two days not making a massive difference atm but we'll keep at it. Will check the new filter and see if it's got any gunk on it yet.

    Fish Constantly Dying

Water changes would be my first go-to. I have a 29 gallon and change about 70% of my water every 7-9 days. Most people here would advocate for bigger, more regular water changes to start with. Water changes are your friend! Do you also dechlorinate the water with each change? Real plants may...

    Fish Constantly Dying

In addition to the above, what is your tank setup like? What substrate and decor do you have? Live plants? Size of tank? What do you treat the water with? Do you add co2? Are you using tap/well/RO water? I'm sure with more information people may be able to help, but for now perhaps don't buy any...

Switching ADFs to an established tank where meds were used?

No advice (although I love ADF's and keep them myself) but do you remember what meds you used? That may help someone answer your question. I know a lot of fish meds can be toxic to frogs so might be worth tearing it down to be on the safe side?
