    My turtle has problems...

The carapace photo appears to show normal shedding of scutes. The pits in the plastron appear to be a moderate case of shell rot. It’s a bacterial infection caused by being kept in filthy water and/or not having an opportunity to dry off completely. Although I can’t be sure from the photo, there...

In that setup, I would use a deep heat projector: https://www.arcadiareptile.com/heat-projector/ A good thermostat is an absolute must, preferably a dimming thermostat with a night drop feature, such as Herpstat.

What are the parameters? We need to know ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, gh, kh, temperature, what lighting you have, etc before we can even consider helping you.

What would you put in this aquarium?

18” wide, 25” tall. It’s planted, somewhat sparsely, because it’s hard to light. Small light, deep water, relatively speaking. Guppy grass seems to be the only thing that really does well.

What would you put in this aquarium?

35 gallon hex, so it’s taller than it is wide. Very hard water. I’m open to any and all ideas.

Blood worms can cause bloat in aquatic frogs. Frozen shrimp, black worms, and earth worms are better choices.

    Tadpole ID

In North America, swarms of tiny black tadpoles in shallow water, such as depicted in your photo, usually are toads. If you decide to raise a few and find out, they should never be released.

    Another mystery of sorts....

I find this varies by species. I work with both alpine newts and marbled newts. The alpine larva generally play nice, but the marbled larva must be separated by size class, or the smaller ones will be eaten.

What are some fun quirks of your fish?

Not sure I'd call it a "quirk" exactly, but in my native tank, I have a madtom- a very small native catfish. I added it for the purpose of cleaning uneaten food. It seems to have a hiding spot under a log, and I seldom see it. In fact, I may go months without a sighting. Each time, my son tries...

    Looking for air pump recommendations

I’m building a series of “nurseries“ for raising newt larva. I need to power about eight small sponge filters, and I’d like to be able to do so without having to run eight pumps. Can anyone recommend a larger pump with multiple ports? I also want to use as few gang valves as possible. I hate...

    Another mystery of sorts....

I work with a couple of species of newts myself. They can climb glass, and squeeze through a tiny gap in the lid. They are usually found months or years later, dried up in a corner.

What type of aquarist stays in the hobby the longest?

I believe that if you get into the hobby while young, and you develop a passion for it to the degree that it becomes part of your identity, and then your life takes a path which doesn’t force you to take large gaps of time away from fish keeping, you will be more likely to be a lifetime...

    Crazy Stories Thread

Sitting in the classroom one day in elementary school. Heard a strange, panicked whining sound from the back of the classroom. Remember the old fashioned metal pencil sharpeners that gripped the pencil? Kid named Brian had gotten his lip stuck in one somehow, and needed to be extricated. Years...

How long have you been part the hobby and what is the scale of your involvement in it?

I’ve kept fish since the late 60’s, when I was a wee lad. However, it hasn’t been consistent, and I don’t think I’ve ever had more than three aquariums going at one time. So from a practical standpoint, I’m still a newbie. My main hobby is reptiles and amphibians.

    I'm really scared.

Horrible blizzard in Wisconsin. After being away from home all week, I’m stuck in one of the last rooms in the worst fleabag in Wausau. I’m happy to be here though. Its much better than spending the night in a cold ditch. Visibility is terrible due to high winds and blowing snow.

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

I’ve been following this bill, as it would have a huge impact on the reptile and amphibian hobby. I think some of you are missing the point of this bill. It has nothing to do with animal welfare. Fish keeping is not going to be outlawed- not now, at least. This bill would prohibit the import or...

What fish is on your Wish list?

Well, if I ever do get angelfish, I will teach them to get along.
  24. Herpin Man

What fish is on your Wish list?

I think an angelfish tank would be cool. Or a tank of green tiger barbs. But I think coolest of all would be a tank of native sticklebacks and mudminnows. I frequently catch them while seining, and invariably discount their value as aquarium fish. I’d like to give them a go sometime.

How did you stay into fish?

Yes- I often think I should also follow that advice with regards to the herps. Let’s just say they keep me well occupied.

How did you stay into fish?

I’ve stayed with the hobby by keeping it simple, and not overdoing it, thus avoiding burnout. I typically have only one or two aquariums going at a time. Fish keeping is really just a side hobby for me, the main one being reptiles and amphibians.

    Axolotl tank mates

The only tank mate I’d consider for axolotls would be White Cloud Mountain minnows- as feeders. Axolotls don’t even make good tank mates with each other.

How did you get into the hobby?

I grew up in a rural area, surrounded mostly by river and swamp. I was interested in animals even as a toddler, and at various times we had aquariums set up with native fish we caught ourselves. They were the old fashioned ten gallons with metal frames and slate bottoms. I also kept reptiles and...

I only have two fish aquariums going right now. A native tank with a green sunfish, a creek chub, and a madtom that I rarely see. In my tropical tank, I have mollies, lemon tetras, and blood fin tetras. I also have some feeder guppies in a tank. I decided that they were too small to use as...

    Making a pond

Use only native frogs, from nearby populations. Any frog you put in the pond should be presumed a potential escapee. You don’t want non-native animals becoming established in the wild.
