    GH test kit question

The API GH test kit might not give a table over 200 but with it each drop is equivalent to 10 or 20 ppm so in effect you count the drops and there is nothing stopping you from going further. The test accuracy might drop off with more drops, but too much over 200 and you are getting into pretty...

Are snails a good thing or a bad thing?

I used to worry about introducing snails. I have them now and they are not causing any issues, kind of like them in the tank.

    My dwarf panda guppies...

If my niece or grandson gave me a plastic plant it would be in my tank for a least a little while. I did have artificial plants once and I found them to be as much maintenance as the real ones.

    Advice on external filter

I used to feel that I need to clean my filters regularly but now I just make sure all my intakes have prefilters on them. I used to use sponge prefilters but I find net or screening better because they don't clog. The best part of prefilters is the biggest waste volume going into the filters...

    Advice on external filter

I wire both the filter and the heaters into the same power bar and turn both off during the water change. I typically pull the water down below the filter intake during a water change and this causes a reverse syphon that pulls the water out of the filter. When this occurs it often doesn't...

Things never stay “perfect” for long…

My experience with angels, all I keep are angels and neos now, is that if you have more than a pair of adults you have to expect to need to setup a new tank from time to time. I manage to keep a number of adults together now approaching two years, longest time yet for me. But to do this I...

    Broken Solenoid -- Help?

Sorry no. I don't use CO2 my comment comes from working with pressurized gasses and regulators in the past for a previous job. A broken solenoid should not cause a gas leak with most designs but from your description the regulator is leaking from around the solenoid fittings.

    Replacing filter cartridges??

You shouldn't have to change your cartridges, rinse should do it. If you have a lot of particulates in the water it can mean something else. Perhaps you are overfeeding. Try putting a sponge prefilter on the intake, it might help in your case.

    3D backgrounds too real???

Overall, I think this discussion really brings out that an aquarium is an unnatural environment for creatures that normally have much larger home ranges. I believe overall it is better for the fish to cover the view outside the tank on at least 1 side so the fish have somewhere they are not...

    3D backgrounds too real???

I prefer neutral "Solid" colors to my backgrounds. If it is confusing to you, think about how your fish feel about it. Looks like the water continues on, but wait, we just hit the glass. I think they adjust to it eventually, making a mental note, "wait that shrimp is not real or I cannot get...

How many people have permanent hospital or quarantine tanks?

I only have extra tanks, none are setup. How do you keep up the cycle, add ammonia from time to time. I have always setup my tanks with plants, never done a fishless cycle.

    Broken Solenoid -- Help?

Depending on the type and brand of regulator you can get replacement solenoids. I don't exactly know how a CO2 regulator is "plumbed" but if you have gas coming out the issue might be larger than the solenoid. On other types of solenoid controlled valves the solenoid acts against a sealed...

Cause of such variation in growth of angel fish…

Of the fish I bred the albinos were definitely the smallest, the largest is a Portuguese blue but otherwise only the silvers (normal angelfish color) seem to grow to full size. I feel the smaller ones likely have an albino gene that is not expressed in the color but affects the size. Of two...

Cause of such variation in growth of angel fish…

I have raised a number of batches of angel fry and now only have ones that I bred. The size variation is about a factor of 3 times, 4 or 5 if you count the mass of the fish. Some of the fish never seemed to grow much, I even put the runts in a large tank of their own when they were younger but...

Liquid or Strips: Freshwater Test Kit Preference?

Get a TDS monitor once you "calibrate" it to your water ie 200 ppm is equivalent to 10 GH or something similar then for the less critical phases you can just use the TDS value, measurements take seconds. They are less than an API test kit, but I would get one of those too.

75 Gallon Planted Community Stocking Advice

Of the fish you have listed I had bad aggression with the Blue Gourami, in the end if allowed they would have killed all the fish in my tank. I had the best success with the pearl gourami, they seemed to me the most personable, at least to me. I currently have a single ember in my Angel tank...

    Marginal plants and roots

    Coal Slagle n organic dirt

    Coal Slagle n organic dirt

    Coal Slagle n organic dirt

I have heard of it being used, but have never used it myself, it is difficult to obtain here. Liquid or Strips: Freshwater Test Kit Preference?

I used them all, I prefer the liquid tests in general but if I want a quick result I will use a strip. I just removed the guppies from my shrimp tank this weekend. The shrimp population was primarily adults, with the majority of the juvenile shrimp being consumed. What’s a fish you wish existed?

The ideal fish would clean the glass, move the waste and detritus to an easy to clean out location of the tank, carefully prune the plants, perform and look pretty and talk to you to let you know if you are not meeting it's needs. Maybe the last point is not so good as we might not like what...

    Thermometers

I wouldn't trust a thermometer that does not go into the water. The outside the tank thermometers cannot give an accurate reading because they have to consider the temperature difference between the outside of the tank and the inside of the tank. This is influenced by the type of glass, the...
