    Crack In New Aquarium

If you can't return it, I have siliconed cracks of that size on small tanks successfully, but it is not ideal. The one consideration is that cracks that terminate mid glass plate will typically continue till they get to the edge and you don't know where they will go till they get there, so I...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

I don't know how much better pronghorn eyesight is compared to caribou but up north in the hunting grounds the indigenous people there would place piles of rocks with horizontal sticks or antlers near arm height along many of the ridge lines to distract from the larger actual blinds. There are...

    Recommendations for lighting and heater

I have been through multiple power outages and the "pro single channel" nicrew ramp timer has kept the program, but loses the current time. I haven't bought one in the last few years, so I cannot say to the current model. The nicrew dual channel ramp timer does not seem to work as well during...

    Hunting with the Badger 2024

You got us all wound up, but no story yet.... :). I don't hunt anymore, but have lived a year off of wild meat and fish when I lived in Lutsel'ke. Looking forward to the stories.

    Signs of life?

In my limited experience cloudy water usually goes away if you give it time. The one picture seems to have a lot of hydra on the glass. With my shrimp tank I took hydra as an indicator that the biofilms are starting to improve. In my opinion a healthy biofilm tends to clean the water of...

    Recommendations for lighting and heater

I uses Fluval and Ebo-Jager heaters now for years, mostly like them. As for lights I have 3 different Nicrew lights that I use with a Nicrew Ramp Timers. The light combination loses time during a power outage but keeps all other settings so the light still goes on and off, just not at quite...

Pictures of your bow-front aquarium please? Especially the Juwel 180

I don't care for bowfronts either. Had one for a while and it seemed that I always had a reflection that interfere with viewing the fish. They are also a pain for fitting items such as canopies or lids or even stands, especially for people make these components themselves or are looking to...

    Hamster advice

When I got bitten it was because I was trying to pick up the hamster. I know better now. I have handled other hamsters since. I think you could put your hand in and see if he sniffs it, if he climbs into your hand then he likes you. Right now he is in a new location with new people...

I have experienced an upset hamster, they can bite and with their incisors it can be deep. I would leave most of the handling to the owner.

Best canister filter foa 70 litre tank

I haven't had any complaints using my fluval 407, but I haven't used an Oase filter so cannot judge between the two. Also a good large filter does not necessarily mean the smaller filter is good too. I find the 407 to be easy to maintain.

    Top Fin 40 Gallon question

I own a 37 gallon top fin tank. Other than the lid dimensions the fish tank was well put together and the seals are good. Owned it now for 5 years or more without any issues. Nothing special, just works.

One of my favorite wild platy species

If I had harder water I would definitely like those Highland Platies. I like fish closer to the natural fish.

Tell me your favourite fresh water fish!

I am currently raising angels but I really like oscars. Puppy dogs of the fish world. My father raised them in a home built massive tank. I got to feed them and my mother would mop up the floor afterwards. To eat I really like fresh caught blue cod, and brook trout.

I see them too; I see in one of the images that the spots are blurred with fish movement.

    Nitrites n plants

Been following this for a bit. 2.5 ppm ammonia is more an indicator that the tank is not cycled, with new substrate and cleaned plants it is possible that the tank was cycled but now it is not. I suspect things went poorly after the introduction of the soil, but then never got a chance to...

    Sixty Gallon Journal

Total agreement. If I found a tank with that dimensions in one of our stores I would pick it up immediately. Around here at sixty is likely to be 48"X12"X24" too tall. Your tank gives the fist more space to swim and more depth to give a more 3d look to the aquarium.

    Liquid co2

It works a bit to control algae, I have tried it some time ago, but it also poisonous, so dosage is very important. I do not know what the long term effects would be on your fish. With algae I find it best to control it with more conventional means, reduce lighting, reduce feeding, and wait...

    AquaClear 110 questions

The one thing with the AC's that I don't like is that they don't always startup well after an interruption, ie power outage, cleaning. This seems more prevalent the lower the water is in the tank.

    AquaClear 110 questions

I have 2 110s and an older Aquaclear 400 or 500. You do not have to change the sponge and you can put the charcoal pad into the garden or with your orchids, they like charcoal. I use mine with only the sponge and some type of biomedia, whatever is handy. Depending on your bioload you...

What do people do with all their spare plants??

I suspect it does, I used to just throw them off the balcony, then mow them up next time I cut the grass but the missus thought that was messy so now I have to pack them to the compost.

    Mosquito larvae

I have a couple of small ponds without fish. During the summer I just scoop the larva out using a large fish net, rinse into a cup of aquarium water and dump into my fishtank. I am not very consistent with it. The extra mosquitoes feed the swallows.

    The Local Pond

I like to observe natural waterways for inspiration for different aquarium ideas. These images are from my daily dog walk near my home. Since owning a dog again, I have been watching this wetland change throughout the seasons (I walk this area at least 4 times a week). This year has been...

thoughts on replacing foam inserts on filters...

I really like the combination of a fine mesh prefilter, a coarse foam initial filter, followed by lots of bacterial substrate, high float rate material. I like to use this configuration with canisters and HOBs. - Prefilter should prevent larger debris entering the filter, especially the...

    Quikrete play sand

20 mesh Silica grit is very similar to pool sand, very clean with mostly rounded edges. Its primary use in Canada lately has been for artificial turf, i think it keeps the blades upwards. It is more tan colored than the pool filter sand that I have also used. My only concern with it is it...

Weird old posts from 2000s lol

Kind of similar to my view of climbing mountains, I measure vertical distances in feet as well, but horizontal in kilometers. That changes when kayaking I measure swell in meters and distances in nautical miles. (This is primarily due to the differences between standard 1:50000 topos vs marine...

Best website for fish tanks (USA)

FYI I got a TOP-FIN tank with canopy a few years ago. The tank was good, seals good, finish ok. The biggest issue was the top fin tanks that have a cheap canopy, have an unusual size for the top shelve on the black plastic finish around the tank (where the glass cover would fit). They don't...

Backpacking in the Big Sandy drainage

Fun facts about Pikas, even though they live high in the mountains they do not hibernate but live on "hay" they gathered and dried during the summer.
