I like to observe natural waterways for inspiration for different aquarium ideas.
These images are from my daily dog walk near my home. Since owning a dog again, I have been watching this wetland change throughout the seasons (I walk this area at least 4 times a week). This year has been particularly good for the pond growth because there has been more rain and less excessively hot days yet still lots of sun. I have been considering setting up a tank with local residents from these ponds, with the exception of the bull frogs, and would have done it by now if my pup wasn't so demanding of my free time. This year the filamentous algae and pond weed have taken over covering 80% of the main pond area, and nearly 100% on some of the smaller ponds. In the winter this pond is a major wintering area for waterfowl, in particular trumpeter swans, but in the summer the majority of the waterfowl leave for more northern areas. This winter a female river otter with four pups moved into the area and I suspect they have been eating the over population of bull frogs. I see the otters about every 3rd day but they do try to keep their distance.
The main pond at the outlet. This used to be drained for a potato farm, but has sense been allowed to go natural. When the beavers moved in, they re-established the water levels to the pre farm level. You are looking at the main dam. The beavers have eaten most of the surrounding deciduous shrubs and have mostly moved out except for one individual that I see from time to time.
Duckweed cover over one of the smaller beaver ponds. Nearly 100% coverage. Do people ever buy duckweed?
The little pond fully covered in duckweed. This is on a main corridor for the otters, typically you can see their paths through the weeds but not today.
Bad photo of a juvenile river otter climbing into the main pond. This winter this little one moved into the area with his mom and 3 siblings.
