Panda Garra’s, and clown loaches… too much of a good thing???

The panda and clowns are both passive fishes but the clown loaches will be 10x larger eventually and the pure size difference can create issues. The only 'advantage' of panda is they will from time to time suck the glass but even then they risk getting knocked off when the clown surf. I.,e don't...

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

Just want to confirm i will be going from tds ~130 to tds ~15; I do have frys in there as well as various adults. Only one male has a large fancy tail. I can move some of them over to the 120 but if you think they will transition i prefer to leave them. My plan is to do 50% water changes with ro...

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

I do 50% water changes on all my blackwater aquariums 'cept the discus tank which has 50 cardinals. I also use peat (which some people frown upon) to stablize the ph. My vague understanding of the chemistry is as long as the ph stays below 7 the fishes are happy as something weird happens with...

This is my a. sp Blutkehl 20 long. It has been setup since ~Dec 2023. The tank is a true black water with ec 31. The plants are doing fairly well all things considered: The population includes a pair of a. sp Blutkehl (on the left); 7 n. morthenthaleri; 4 common otto and a few uninvited...

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

Yea that is what i thought - yea i'll be reducing it to ~15 tds. I'll move them in with the angels and krobia and let them do as they do. When i said black water i meant 'real black water' not that phony stuff people think a bit of tannis create.

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

I have a 40B with some legacy domestic guppies and swordtails. The tap water is approx gh 6 (tds 120). I'd like to transition this tank to blackwater for some interesting dwarf cichild to fill in the bottom. Will the poor reminants of guppeis and swordtails i have survive the transitiion...

    Panda Garra (Garra Flavatra)

As a bonus they will crawl onto your hand during water changes and will eat a bit of bba. Note they are virtually impossible to breed in the home aquarium as they are migratory and need different conditions for breeding.

South American fish that school in upper third?

You should not mix sa cichild with asian or african cichild because they don't speak the same language. More precisely most fishes will signal territorial aggression before actual attacks. Unfortunately fishes from different regions are 'confused' by the signals they see and frequently result in...

    Angelfish advice- bad tankmates

I've had angels eat cardinals; it really depends on the size of the angels. My largest male right now is a rather big beast - at least 7 inches top to bottom. Quite a lovely marble. He is one of the more gentle angels i've had in a long time but if he can snatch a cardinal he will. The smaller...

Didn’t realize how pretty these would be… Diamond Angel fish

Well.... as they say beauty are in the eye of the beholder. I have some pb clown pearl scale angelfishes (i do believe yours is pearl scale); they are ok but i think i've had enough of angelfishes. I just spent an hour watching my little ol male a. lineta flex for the female now that is one...

    First tank - SOS Algae!

Can he run the jewel tank with just one tube? He clearly has too much light so replacing the 9k with another 65k is probably not needed. BBA is a different beast and i can't help there (I have a bit of it myself when i transitiion from tap to ro in one aquarium); but most algae issue are too...

South American fish that school in upper third?

If you are willing to consider asian fishes there are several less silver options including kubotai rasbora and emerald eye rasbora. Both of these fishes will group up - the kubotai are constantly swimming near the top but not a tight school formation; the emerald eye i have have formed a tight...

South American fish that school in upper third?

This is not the case; ph itself is meaning-less as long as it is fairly stable. What is more important is kh/gh parameters. While there is a relationship between kh and ph it isn't direct. Where ph gets interesting is when it changes frequently from base to acidic. The issue here has to do with...

South American fish that school in upper third?

Different species of pencil fish have different behavior just like tetras. However, having said that if you have a tight lid marble hatchet fishes are an excellent option. If you do not have a lid or have gaps in the lid they will jump; after all who really wants to be enclosed in a glass cage ;)

[SOLVED] "Insta-Cycling" new tank with old sponge media

[SOLVED] "Insta-Cycling" new tank with old sponge media

Yea i've done that - just be sure to add a few fishes when you add the seasoned sponge and only a few and monitor the water. On the one hand a large aquarium can absorb a bit more waste due to larger volume of water on the other hand the % of bacteria per unit area is less it is a give/take...

[SOLVED] "Insta-Cycling" new tank with old sponge media

I never actually timed the 'how long' part as what i do is take a good sponge filter from an established tank and replace it with a new sponge filter; the old one then goes into the new tank where it has a new home. - If you intend to remove it from the new tank i would say it is trial and error...

    Clownloach need help

Loaches like soft water but the water chemistry change will stress them. The change in minerals (gh doesn't measure which mineral are in the water and some of these water softner filter out specific minerals like iron) can have a rather negative impact on plants. I've started running more and...

My god, I love the Chihiros WRGB 2.

I dislike the wrgb ii; it has no white led and it is nearly impossible to get colour balance pictures with it. Java Fern Question.

I would not remove the old leaves for TWO reasons (and this seems true for most aquatic plants): first the plant will eat the leaves for faster conversion; 2nd with java fern baby ferns grow from old leaves (not sure if they will grow from old emersed leaves but certainly they do from old...

Does anyone have know about the Angelfish called Blue California?

For me it is either wild caught blue rams or domestic gold rams. gold rams was one of my earlier venture into dwarf cichild so i have a special irrational like for them. Sort of like a. nijjensi (which is an absolutely lovely fish) (the little dots are sterbai eggs):
