There are certain fish you can get that can stir up the sand, relieving air and gas pockets, also sifting the waste to the top of the sand, like khuli loaches, but there is no way around having to vacuum the top of your sand bed.

  Depending on the extent of the damage will determine how well they grow back, but usually there is not problem. Of course it's a case by case bases. I hope you see some improvements!
