You need to move to the NW, we have some of the best tap water in the country. pH 7 and nothing else is really measurable with test kits :D

Sounds like it's some form of venturi system which relies on water velocity through the outlet to suck air through the smaller pipe, the end of which must be above the water level. I used to run these from my powerhead and they were very successful as the impeller and outlet are VERY close...

The roots on these resemble soft white bulbs (like on tulips etc) rather than long stringy roots. I will endevour to find their name, I'm not doubting that they could be spider plants though.

I'm just worried that if I ever have to leave my tank for longer than a week (holidays etc) then the pH will fall even further than 6.

They do resemble spider plants but have bulbous roots. They look great under my lights now that I have clear water!

Although my tap water is pH 7, by the time I've added dechlorinator, the pH of the water has dropped to 6.8 and after 4 or 5 days my tank water is at pH 6. I've tried using a neutral buffer powder from Seachem but didn't realise it was so full of phosphates - I now blame it for a recent algea...

I've noticed that you've got your external filter inlets and outlets next to each other. Is that wise? - surely all you'll do is recirculate "clean" water back into the filter?

It's not a plec - at least it doesn't share any of my plecs characteristics - sucker mouth etc. It's has quite fancy whiskers. I must try and get a digital camera!

I've just got a 104 to compliment my UGF and I love it - my water is looking cleaner than ever! However, you'll need a 204 or 304 for the bigger tank?

I like the external Fluval filters. I think a 204 or 304 should do the trick.

But that's a bit more unnatural - 2 periods of darkness in 24 hours? My tank is quite a way from the nearest window so when the lights are off (even on a sunny day) the tank is quite dark. I think I'd rather just turn them on later in the morning. :D
