Maybe they're nocturnal? Isn't it 3 in the morning where you are?

Thirded!! We really need a Discus section to this forum pretty please ;)

    ick

...just come through a bout of ich. I used Intrepet's remedy which id the trick in the end. Removed carbon from my filter but forgot to remove the bag of green-X which I think was removing the treatment from the water through ion exchange. Gone within a week now although I'm still...

Are they also known as apple snails - 2 of my local shops recently got a load in... Pretty big suckers (excuse the pun) :P

    Tap Water Parameters

You need to move to the NW, we have some of the best tap water in the country. pH 7 and nothing else is really measurable with test kits :D

I have Clown Loaches & Convicts!

I like my silver hatchets, very easy to keep. Marbled hatchets look nice too.

Yeah, mine's much darker than that :D

    Air Diffuser

Sounds like it's some form of venturi system which relies on water velocity through the outlet to suck air through the smaller pipe, the end of which must be above the water level. I used to run these from my powerhead and they were very successful as the impeller and outlet are VERY close...

Any chance of a dedicated Discus section?

I'm thinking of setting up a 2nd tank for Discus and was wondering if this forum would benefit from a seperate Discus section? Afterall there's already chichlid, betta/gourami, catfish etc... On a seperate note, I've been to several LFS's and none of them have had any decent books on the...

    Plant "fertilizer"

The roots on these resemble soft white bulbs (like on tulips etc) rather than long stringy roots. I will endevour to find their name, I'm not doubting that they could be spider plants though.

    Natural pH Buffer?

I'm just worried that if I ever have to leave my tank for longer than a week (holidays etc) then the pH will fall even further than 6.

    Natural pH Buffer?

    Great answer, thanks :)

    Plant "fertilizer"

They do resemble spider plants but have bulbous roots. They look great under my lights now that I have clear water!

    Natural pH Buffer?

Although my tap water is pH 7, by the time I've added dechlorinator, the pH of the water has dropped to 6.8 and after 4 or 5 days my tank water is at pH 6. I've tried using a neutral buffer powder from Seachem but didn't realise it was so full of phosphates - I now blame it for a recent algea...

    Plant "fertilizer"

Good grief that site is huge!! :o I've consulted my aquarium encyclopedia and I have the following: 3 x vallisneria spiralis 1 x onion plant (? - not in my book) and 5 x a white I green stripe leafed plant (again not in my book) I'll check out that website again when I have more time!

    Plant "fertilizer"

I do indeed have them all in a 140L tank, I was too enthusiastic when I first set my tank up -_- . I've lost a couple of clown loaches and a blue ram to white spot though :( If all the plants need is nitrate, then I agree with you - they'll get all they need, but I'm pretty sure they need...

    Plant "fertilizer"

I've just added a few more plants to my tank to help uptake nitrate and to provide a bit more shelter for my bottom dwellers AND for something else for my ever growing silver dollars to munch on.... I'm sure that with as many plants as I have now (about 8 I think) I'm going to need to start...

    My 180 Gallon.

I've noticed that you've got your external filter inlets and outlets next to each other. Is that wise? - surely all you'll do is recirculate "clean" water back into the filter?

    Long treatment of white spot....?

I've never seen it for sale in the UK... Jus down to the last few spots on my longest serving loach - the one that brought the infection from my LFS :grr: died a week ago - he was full of spots still. I think the treatment is working, just not as fast as I'd hoped...

    Network Catfish

It's not a plec - at least it doesn't share any of my plecs characteristics - sucker mouth etc. It's has quite fancy whiskers. I must try and get a digital camera!

No I don't have a digital camera - I may try and borrow one. It's a very pretty fish - I just wish I knew more about it...

Maybe I should drop the temp again and just wait it out....

    What Filter?

I've just got a 104 to compliment my UGF and I love it - my water is looking cleaner than ever! However, you'll need a 204 or 304 for the bigger tank?

    Filtration for a 260L tank

I like the external Fluval filters. I think a 204 or 304 should do the trick.

    Long treatment of white spot....?

Thanks for that guys. 85F is way way over 30C infact!! I've got my temp up to 28C but this of course reduces the dissolved 02 in the water - going up to 34C seems crazy! I'll let you know my results. Having re-read the instructions on the Intrepet treatment I bought it does say a temp over...

    Network Catfish

I've been trying to find a website that will give me more information about this kind of catfish. I've been to Planet Catfish, but couln't find anything (and you can't search the site :( ). Anyone any links? It's not a corydoras, and not a false network catfish as shown on this (rather...

    Long treatment of white spot....?

:( How long does it usually take to get rid of whitespot? I first noticed it on one of my clown loaches a couple of weeks ago so I got some Intrepet Tratment number 6 (whitespot treatment plus) and I've been adding it to the tank at the prescribed intervals and doses, plus adding some with...

    Panting fish

I've never had an ammonia or nitrite problem, but used to experience a rapid build up of nitrate before I started to use green-X in my external filter. I guess having 4-5 cms of gravel helps beneficial bacterial and I draw water through it with a powerhead... My 02 levels have gone from 2mg/l...

You're agreeing with me? Nice part of the world you live in, I was in Naples a couple of years ago - some nice fishing in the Everglades around there....

    Timing of lights

But that's a bit more unnatural - 2 periods of darkness in 24 hours? My tank is quite a way from the nearest window so when the lights are off (even on a sunny day) the tank is quite dark. I think I'd rather just turn them on later in the morning. :D

    Panting fish

Thanks for that, I'm using a new treatment from Interpet that's supposed to be safe for scaleless fish. Better safe than sorry though I guess :)

    phosphate

I think I read somewhere that RO water for Discus and alike is low in pH and needs aerating before use - this helps return the pH back to neutral. I think rainwater can be low in 02 too so try aerating your water to maintain a comfortable pH. My pH is more stable when I have my powerhead and an...

    Panting fish

Right, bought a test kit and at 9 in the morning (before my lights came on) I tested and got 2 mg/l 02  This is way way too low and I've been advised >7 mg/l but during the summer my tanks temp gets into the 28-30C range and according to the guide that came with the kit it's impossible...

    Timing of lights

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess that means my plants won't be putting as much 02 into the water so I'll have to rig up and air stone....

    Panting fish

Yeah, I was starting to think that - couldn't help myself when in my LFS! My clown loaches haven't really grown all that much and the fastest growing fish seem to be one of my silver dollars and my network catfish. If the latter gets to 15cm as quickly as I think it will then I'll have to sell...

    Timing of lights

I have a 140L tank containing 5 plants but have always suffered from a murkiness in the water. I'm wondering if it's a form of algea and I need to reduce the time I have my loghts on? I have 2 x 25W flourescent 30" tubes which are normally on from 8 am to 10 pm every day. The tank is not in...
