    Surface Agitation - How Necessary?

Hi, surface agitation serves two purposes. Firstly, by making ripples this can actually increase the surface area of the water surface by up to double. As this is where the majority of gas exchange takes place this can only be a good thing. Secondly, surface agitation will stop a film of...

    Fluval 305- Slow Flow

you either have a blockage in the pipes or media. Or the impeller is slipping. Another thing to check have you got the top on the right way round? When assembled you should read FLUVAL right by the seam between the top and bottom. Lastly you could have an air lock

Next Tank Thoughts, Opinions And Stocking

Ha ha I thought you meant the purple one at the top before I re read your post! Yes the 980 is a very nice tank for the money. I had the 850 some years back and did a few mods to the media set up. Firstly don't worry about changing the (expensive) carbon cartridges, in fact don't even use the...

    Cleaning Your Tank

Been doing it for 10 years this way without incident I find by re-scaping at each water change stops territories being established so much which suppresses aggression/stress. I feel also by the way the fish 'have a go' at my hands it keeps them entertained.

    Cleaning Your Tank

As all my rocks are hollow and sectional (10 in all) I remove them all. I remove all but 2 which I leave at one end of the tank. I vac then move the 2 rocks down the other end then finish the vac. Each rock I empty into a vessel to check for fry (and hiding fish). I then replace the rock in a...

    External Or Internal?

Appreciate that your tank is fairly small so you could be forgiven in thinking that why would you need an external filter but think about it? Why take up precious room with an ugly filter when you can have it outside the tank with just a discrete pair of pipes inside the tank? The benefit of of...

    Cycling Confusion

Ha Ha Ha Haaaa! Got to love 'friends'! When I first joined these forums many (many, many) years ago I was an irritating little sod because I challenged everyone about this Cycling lark as I had a tank full of fish which were perfectly happy without all this Cycling nonsense! I infuriated...

    Filtration To Stock

I have same tank set up and have no problems whatsoever.....? When you say you are having trouble keeping your tank clean for more than a couple of days, how do you mean clean. Remember your filter is primarily a biological filter with only a degree of mechanical filtration. If it's growth on...

    Filter Overflow And Media

Back in the day I had an 850 with the same set up. I got rid of all the cartridges and used filter sponges and ceramic noodles with a thin layer of filter cotton mat all got and cut to size from the pond department of the lfs. I would just like to comment that the filter is SO easy to check so...

    What Is This Surface Film?

The film could be a number of things 1, contamination from hands going in the tank, ie hand creams, grease etc. 2, protein oil from food (frozen foods) 3, airborne cleaning agents/polishes/air fresheners. Easy to get rid of by blotting it up with a quality plain kitchen paper roll or I...

    Snails

Hi, as suggested they normally come free with unwashed plants or as eggs. Over feeding will help them flourish There are snail killer products on the market which contain copper (not recommended) As you supply zero information as to what fish you are keeping it's hard to suggest much but if...

    Fish Less Cycle

Ahh as I suspected. You need to get some ammonia solution from somewhere like Homebase in the household cleaning department. If you are unsure what to get this is good If you find some from a different source and are unsure then give it a shake and if it froths up then it's no good. Also...

    Fish Less Cycle

If your ammonia is at 5 ppm that's spot on so turn the heat up to 30* and sit back and wait.... HOWEVER.....if as you have stated your ammonia level is at 0.5 ppm you need to add more ammonia (using the calculator at the top of this page) to bring the level up to 4-5ppm. I am assuming you are...

    Ammonia Cycling

What would be better is to try and get some matured filter media from a cycled system. If you do not have anyone you know who keeps fish then you could try your LFS (local fish shop) with the promise of being a future good customer. :hey:

    Sand Substrate Problems

Hi, I used sand as a substrate back when I had a community tank and experienced your problem 1 and 2. 1) The discolouration can be removed by mixing the sand with a long stick in this area. However to stop it happening try to slope the sand at the front to a level below the lower lip of the...

Whats Going On With My Cycle? Help Please :)

Hi, I have to ask what you mean by 'active filter media'? If you mean carbon or any kind of resin filtration like nitrite/nitrate remover you need to remove these and replace with foam/ceramic noodles. Your cycle is yet to kick off by the sounds of it. The nitrate was probably already present...

    Fluval 405 (Update Question)

I hate to tempt fate but I have been running a 305 for 4 years which gets a strip down clean of the mechanics every 2 weeks and has never given me a minutes worry! I'm thinking a 405 is the same but just a bit bigger? Apart from the odd smear of Vaseline around the seal and pipe connectors...

    I've Just Bought A New Tank :d

Back in the day when I was running as many tanks as I could fit in the house I always did the same thing with a newly acquired second hand tank. I placed it on a flat hard surface in the garage (or anywhere where water on the floor didn't matter)and filled the tank to the very brim with cold...

    Inch Per Gallon Rule

Just to add, just because the 'rule' says that in your tank it's ok for 17" of fish it doesn't mean that, say, a 17" common pleco would be happy in it! OK so that pretty obvious but you see what I am getting at :hey:

Looking For Some More Freshwater Community Fish.

40 gallons (UK) that's approx. 180 liters so loads of room left! Regarding the stock you have now most are shoaling fish (Neons, Guppies and Danios) so you would be best to increase those first. Kribs do better in a shoal as well although I would not recommend them in a community set up!
