    Breeding My Discus

Thanks Tom. I have done everything as I should, so it's kind of up to the fish now.......and a little luck!  So longs as the fish don't eat their eggs! I have stopped using the wire guard, as I feel that it annoys the parents too much. Eggs are 12 hours old now, and I just added some meth blue...

    Breeding My Discus

Lazy lovers!! Just swanning around, eating food and getting fat!!!..........But enough about me! My fish haven't spawned yet, but I am patient!  Sorry. I have been a bit busy at work, and they need a lot of attention. Have a bit of free time now, so hope I can get somewhere.

    Breeding My Discus

Zante, I would say it is unlikely to get free swimming fry in a community tank at any point. If the fry make it as far as free swimming, they will most likely become lunch for the other tank mates!  The parents won't have so much trouble protecting the eggs and wrigglers, but they won't be able...

    Breeding My Discus

Sorry Guys, I am away working for a few weeks, so the fish are all back in the main tank so it's easier for my girlfriend to take care of them. I need to be at home when they are in the love shack, as they need quite a bit of care.   As soon as I am back home I will put 3 pairs back in there.

Thanks again guys. A small amount of effort, but a large amount of love went in to it, and never any work to take care of it, but always a joy.

    Breeding My Discus

That last spawn was largely infertile, so I removed it. I suspect it was because I was using tap water. Yesterday I saw they were getting ready to spawn again, so I did a quick water change and used an RO/tapwater mix. The eggs "look" good for now. Added Meth Blue, and up'd the water temp by a...

    Breeding My Discus

Wasted away 4 hours of your life!           20 gallon long(is that 70 litres?). Sounds a little bit on the small size for a Discus tank. What are the dimensions? Discus grow really quite big, as aquarium fish go, so need a good bit of space. In particular they like a deep tank 18 inches ++.   In...

Hi New To The Forum And In Need Of Help

+1 On DrRob's advise. Switch it off and depress the priming pump plunger a few times, then switch it back on.   If it still won't start drawing water from the tank. Close the taps, remove the inlet pipe, get a bucket, then open that pipe tap and give it a suck to start the syphon. Once you have...

    Water Temprature

Fits on the rim of the tank and runs off a 12v adapter. You can angle the unit to blow directly down on the water or across the tank. I find that it drops the water temp by about 4-5 degrees C. I have mine connected to the light timer, so that it is only on when the lights are on, as it is my...

    Water Temprature

How big is the tank, and is it covered with a closed hood, or open? I have a small saltwater tank(open top) and I have a clip on fan to keep the water cool. It does cause extra evaporation, so needs daily top ups. Similar to this.....

    Breeding My Discus

Some lovin' went down last night!    I have added methylene blue, to help prevent fungus. Stopped feeding the parents(they won"t be fed until after the fry are swimming), and I won't do any water changes until just before the eggs hatch. This is all on the assumption that the eggs are actually...

    Some Starting Off Questions

I get around a litre a day evaporate. Top up with freshwater, as the salt obviously does not evaporate. That silver thing is a cooling fan. It is connected to the light timer, so that when the light is on the fan is on. Without that fan the light radiates too much heat and the water gets hot...

    Some Starting Off Questions

Rory, I have a little 2 footer in my kitchen. I already had the tank and light unit. Just switched out the bulbs for marine ones, paid about 20 quid for the skimmer, and about the same again for the HOB filter. I think the wave makers were around a tenner each. Give, I don't have exotic fish in...

    Some Starting Off Questions

Rorie, I know your fish keeping knowledge is vast, as I followed your fish house blog before.    I have a small marine tank after years of freshwater, and thought the same as you before I set it up. It is actually quite easy! A lot of hype about nothing. The only difference in my mind, between...

How To Get Get 100% Of The Co2 To Dissolve?

I wouldn't say it is possible to get "100%" to dissolve in an aquarium, but you obviously want to get as much of it to dissolve as you possibly can, to save wasting gas. How are you currently delivering it? Are you just using a ceramic diffuser?   Also what type of filter are you running?   IMO...

    Breeding My Discus

Plumbing all finished, and leak tested. I have hooked up a timer(lawn sprinkler type), so it will do automatic water changes everyday. I am going to go back to using my tap water for now, and see how it goes. The water has zero chlorine or anything else added, as it is pumped from a 200 foot...

    Is This Algae?

Yep, +1 That's Duckweed. You will need to remove it on a regular basis, as it grows so fast it will completely cover the water surface very quickly. Totally harmless little plant though.

    Solenoid Woes

I get this from time to time. Not sure what type of solenoid you have, but most are basically the same. There is usually a small orange diode inside the electrical section, which indicates that the solenoid is on. This will let you know there is power going to the unit. Assuming you have power...

What Fish Go Well With Discus

Most Tetras, especially Cardinals. Sterbai Corys enjoy the same water parameters as Discus, as do Festivum(Flag) Cichlids, ad even GBRs. Avoid fast moving or boisterous fish, as they may cause stress to Discus.
