    algae

    Does this look like algae (on the plant)?? It appears white in the day then at night it looks brown. when i did a water change today it stirred it up (its also on the gravel and rocks) I also have higher than normal levels of ammonia and nitrite if that helps the i.d. thanks

    strange! i have just had a guy test the water in the oceanography lab next door. It was not quantative but from adding some chemicals to the sample i have, we have discovered there is nitrite (prob quite a lot) and some ammonia. eeek. what should i do now?? thanks

    this is harry - do you know what he is?? Can you see what in this picture looks like brown scuzz on the plant-life on the left on the fish?? This what is covering the gravel and stones etc. In the daylight, it looks white, though when the room is darker it does look brown. I did a 10% water...

If it shows that i have excess ammonia and nitrates, what is the course of action? to be honest, Im not sure if he is a breem or not; we inherited these fish from a friend when his mother dies and we were not told what he was, and we have not been able to find...

    im hopeless, i have no idea what the filter is called; it has a sponge type thing in the middle of black casing which collects all the rubbish from the tank. The filter was damp at the time of moving but i didnt soak it in water to keep it wet...should I have done this?

    HI Bob, I cleaned the whole lot in plain tap water (the whole tank is probably about 35 gallons, i think i got my estimate wrong before, 2 standard size buckets of old fish water were kept). I don't have a test kit, would you reccomend I purchase one?
