    Lighting

Thanks again. No I don't have a reflector. When purchasing a new tube can I not get one with higher wattage? If so, any ideas on what I should buy. Would I still need a reflector? Ta Andy.

    Lighting

Cheers for the replies. In answer to the above questions: 1) Can't remember exact amount of time but anywhere between 8 and 10 months. 2) In my infinate wisom  I reasoned that brown algae is caused by low levels of light (green by high) so I upped it to give more hours of 'daylight'...

    Lighting

Hi I have a 2 foot tank with flourescent tube as lighting. I usually have this on for around 12 hours a day but have recently upped it to 13 and 14. recently I have been getting brown 'algae' covering most things in the tank. This is like a layer of film and easily rubs off. I have had the...

    Sand Problem

Thanks for the quick reply. The waste actually sticks to the when it starts to degrade so swooshing doesn't get it up. It may just be me?? I'll have a go at it. I can't see how this doesn't happen to other people. Cheers Andy.

    Sand Problem

Hi everyone I've got a bit of a problem with my sand. Once the fish waste sinks to the bottom onto the sand it starts to degrade. This starts to form a 'carpet' of green\brown on the sand. Removing it involves sucking it up through the pipe as part of the cleaning routine. This obviously...

    Brown Layer Of Algae

Hi I am getting a thin 'layer' of brown algae over most of my tank. It started on the sand, and now is going on my rocks\wood and other apparatus etc. If you rub it it comes away very easily and is like a very thin veil of algae. My lamp is on 12 hours a day. Does anyone know what causes...

    Small Sharks

Hi Once I went to a pet shop and the guy was talking about various fish. I told him the size of my tank (only 2ft  ). He then offered me silver sharks (bearing in mind I already had a good few other fish). I asked him if my tank was too small and his reply was "it's okay, these are...

    Test Results

Hi I set my tank up last Wednesday. It's a 58 litre. I have sand substrate, 1 peice of bogwood, a few rocks, a structured background which I stuck to the inside with aquarium silicone. I also have small clumps of christmas moss (no other plants as yet). No fish either. Friday, I added the...

    Sand Depth

I know this has been asked loads but what is the agreed depth of sand as substrate? Mainly to avoid gas pockets (I know all about stirring, snails etc). I've been trawling through the history and found a variety of answers. Cheers Andy.

    Overfeeding

Hi I know this might be a difficult question to answer but how much should a fish be fed. Can anyone tell me someting like "one flake for a 2 inch fish twice a day" or something similar. All this as much as they can eat in 2 mins seems a bit flakey. Cheers Andy.

    Thermometers

No need! Just been talking to my mum about them. Turns out she has one, with a little stand and a probe on the end of a good sized wire. It's suppose to be a food one, but I've scolded it under boiling water and it should be fine for fishies if you put it in food. Even has warnings for low...

    Silicone Sealant

I have bought some backing which needs to go on the inside of the tank. Do I basically want "non-toxic, animal friendly" sealant. I don't have to buy "aquarium sealant" or something. Ta Andy.

    Thermometers

My thermometer smashed at the top so I bought another one which did the same a day later. It's a glass one that sticks to the inside of the tank. I was thinking about getting one of those digital LCD ones that go on the inside of the tank, with a little sensor. Are these accurate? Are they...

    Filter And Sand

Cheers for the advice, some good points there. Yes, its a new setup although not my first, it's my first with sand. When you say let it settle for a day or so, do you mean with the filter running with the floss in, or no filter at all? Is filter damage a big problem? I think mines fairly...

    Starting Over

I'm starting over with my tank, after nearly a year and a half. I've recently had a bit of a disaster due to an intermittent faulty filter. Anyway, I'm going to drain the tank. I have one survivor - a little danio - who willbe going on 'holiday' in my uncles tank. Firstly, is it best to...

    Algae And Sand

I was talking to the women in the pet shop who said the action of picking up the gravel in the vac, and them rubbing against each other cleans the gravel so the algae doesn't build up on it. Obviously you can't do this with sand, so do you get problems wih algae? Cheers Andy.

    Juwel Structured Background

Hi Does anyone have these or similar. I was looking at the normal all black one. Is it ok to keep your heater near it. Obviously this would need moving onto the side of the aquarium?? Does it have any negative impact? What about the glass behind it, does algae build up on this and cause...

    Cleaning Tank With Plants

How do you clean your gravel where the plants are? I have a self start vac type thingy, which is quite wide. Obviously sticking it in where the plants are would damage them. Do you remove them? I was just concerned that the waste would build up in these areas if you just left it. Also, do...

    Sand And Algae

Hi I have been weighing up whether to get sand for my tank. I decided yes, so off I goes to the pet shop. One thing is that its hard to get hold of were I live and places that do stock it only seem to have white (silica). Anyway in one particular shop the lady told me 'yes it looks nice...

    Air Stones

Hi Do people recommend using airstones. I've heard its good for fish at increasing oxygen but bad for plants during the day as it removes the CO2. The ideal being to have the stone on at night. This isn't an option for me as the tank is next to my bed and far too noisy with the bubbles...

Stocking Help, Tank Mates For A Betta

I've had a tank with all three of these species (Betta, Danio, Guppy) in and they got along fine. However, my Betta had a 'thing' about orange platy's and would chase them around the tank. Just depends on the nature of the individual fish. Aandy.
