Is It Wrong That I Never Test My Tanks Water

I have no doubt that there's things you know that I don't. I bet you'd know if there was something wrong with your fish by looking at him for 15 seconds whereas I wouldn't necessarily know and could only generalize based upon Oscars and not your particular fish. :) I know piranhas pretty well...

Is It Wrong That I Never Test My Tanks Water

I haven't tested my water in more than 20 years or so I would say. It's NOT because I'm such a great fishkeeper and don't need to but I only have had Piranhas and large aggressive cichlids and I know how each should act so I go by their actions/reaction, their coloration etc on how the water...

    Whats Best With Water Changes?

I disagree and would like to know why you say this. You're throwing this info out there as a generalization without knowing any facts such as stocking levels, type of fish, feeding routine, tank size etc. In a perfect world it would be best if fish had 100% new water every day, so I'd like...

    Black Piranha In 50g?

What size tank is he in now? Is that your rbp in the 75 per your sig? It would definitely have to be short term if you did. They grow really slow but still need some room. Here's a pic of my S. rhombeus if you're interested...

What do you mean by a black piranha? A S. rhombeus?

Wilder. I've always appreciated how much she helps in the most important area of fishkeeping. I can't think of many I respect more than her.

When Will My Nitrate Be 0

Many aquarists would kill to have a steady reading of 10 ppm nitrates. I know of a lot of people that have 40-60 ppm right out of their tapwater. Feel lucky and laugh at the rest of us. :)

    Mercy Killing

I normally don't get into pissing contests but this comment really pisses me off. Get off from a fish aquarium forum if you feel the need to show how heartless you are when someone posts about a fish you deem not worthy of life. There's a difference between starting a thread about how you feel...

    Bacteria Bloom

...And I'll have to disagree with you. Not saying I'm correct and you're not but jmo is all. Bacterial blooms are caused by hetorotrophic bacteria, I agree, but that heterotrophic bacteria is not essential to the cycle. In fact, they do a lot more harm than good. Although they are...

    Mercy Killing

In ragards to mercy killing our animals, I'm all for it. If there's nothing that can be done to help them and they suffer then I would do it. In your case though, it's just white spot. Healthy fish don't die from it nor ever get it. I would try and resolve as to why you have fish with a...

    Hello!:d

10% solution and air dry for 3 days is what I do. Someone above mentioned soap might be bad. If not rinsed well, you're correct. Soap will attack the gills of fish which is akin to someone choking a human around the neck. We can breathe but over time will suffocate.

My Babies Got Teeth (its A Fish)

Not sure. Doesn't look like teeth to me but hard to tell in that pic. Pseudocanines aren't located there so it's not that per my 1st question. AFAIK, Oscar don't have any teeth, at least like a Parachomis motaguensis, P. dovii or Flowerhorn. (Stating these 3 as hoping you've had or seen them...

An Oscar with teeth? Is it a purebreed? Do you mean teeth like pseudocanines like Parachromis have? never heard of that before.

    Glass Covers On Tank

I'm 42, been in the hobby since I was 10 or so and have "studied" piranhas for 20 years and I STILL learn something new every time I turn around. It's a never-ending process and you can't learn if you don't ask so keep it up! :)

    Sanchezi Piranha

lol yea, I saved it a while ago because I liked the saying. If I had the money to blow I would most definitely try to co-hab. I've tried it twice in the past but didn't work out well and I can't afford to do it just yet. If you try it PM me and let me know, I'd love to hear the updates.

    Flower Horn

Again Davo86 picks up the slack. Thank you davo, good ideas and questions that need to be answered. We are suggesting ways to get your flowerhorn to eat, hopefully. If he's not stressed from the water parameters he will more readily eat. (Not saying it IS bad water params but the best bet so...

    Sanchezi Piranha

I agree that some have tried it but 99% of the time it doesn't work at all or not for long and that's of the advanced aquarists. Just as some know that have had rbp's, if you feed them minnows or add other fish the fish could last for days months or even a year but chances are almost 100% that...

    Filter Question

Carbon won't leech back into your aquarium as it adsorbs not absorbs organic pollutants/chemicals. Bacteria that uses the carbon to colonize will also consume this waste. Activated carbon will absorb gases but as it does it nuetralizes it so if it leeched what it absorbed it wouldn't be a...

    Sanchezi Piranha

Unfortunately, for the piranhas you are dead on. Gratz to you though jonny_dw for doing your homework and not impulse-buying a piranha. Other than geryi, and even then that's for experts only and still rarely works out, you never want to have more than 1 Serrasalmus per aquarium. I wish I...

    Quick Question

You couldn't be more wrong. The height of the tank doesn't matter anyways, that's just wasted space for piranhas and I find it hard to believe that rbp's weren't skittish. They're one of the biggest sissy fish alive and they might have been alive but certainly weren't healthy. 50g IS too small...

    Flower Horn

On my tanks I get filters that turn the tank over 10-15 times an hour per gallon. (Not sure about lph, I'm sorry) get one that will turn your tank over a minimum of 10 times an hour when you have large cichlids that are mesy. If it IS what we think it is...that the tank isn't cycled or keeps...

    Mixing Africans And South Americans

Unless you get F1's they all come from the same water chemistry and if you aren't into breeding them then I don't see the different water chemistry argument being a valid one. I'm definitely in the minority on that though as everyone says it does make a difference but IMO it doesn't so take it...

Buying Fish Online Rather Than Local Stores?

I buy almost all of my fish online but that's because I want pure breeds and piranhas that you can't get in an lfs. I'm not sure about the online stores you asked about in particular but I can vouch for http://www.sharkaquarium.com/ and http://www.aquascapeonline.com/ and say I've never had a...
  27. G

    Quick Question

50g is too small for 1 rbp, let alone 3 but yes, he will kill the smaller ones. It wouldn't matter if he was well-fed or not, piranhas are extremely territorial even moreso than cichlids so they would be killed for that alone.

    Parents

I'm extremely protective of my tanks and don't let anyone near them. I won't even let my wife do a thing for my fish (she loves that idea anyways) Her nephews came over one day and thought it would be cute to stick their hands inside of my tank to play with my S. rhombeus piranha I had at the...

    Weird "film" On Water Surface

Hard to say without pics but is it white or green? Oily looking? Could possibly be due to high organic levels or poor water circulation. WC's will get rid of it as will laying a paper towel across the surface to soak it up if that's what it is.

Agreed 100% on what Dav086 mentioned. Just wanted to add that I'm glad you aren't taking it personally or getting defensive and trying to learn so it makes it easy to try and troubleshoot and try to help you. I also believe you when you say your fish are growing considerably as it's obvious...

    Confused About Oscar Tank Sizes

Female oscars grow to about 10-12" but males routinely get up to 13-15". I don't know where it started that "oscars" only get 10-12" in an aquarium. I hear that a lot but don't understand it and have seen very many 13"+ and even a few 15-16" that other people have had. But yea, per your...

    Flower Horn

I am confused. In your first post you said the new flowerhorn is 3" and in your follow-up you say he's 7"? I must be misreading it, I guess. IMO, I wouldn't change so much in a wc right now. That could be stressing him. Try 2-3 throghout the week at 25%. Davo86 might be on the right track...

    Flower Horn

Sounds strange indeed. How big are the other fish in the tank? How quickly do they "run" away from his area when he defends it? If immediately or they stay away from it then they might not be harassing him but if it takes a few bluffs from him they very well could be testing him too much for...

Without a doubt it's my black rhom. (S. rhombeus) They kill anyhting and everything on site. Here's a couple of things that Wayne Mah, who's studied them for 20 years says about them, including putting buti's and red devils in together with them... (I've had butti's and red devils and they...
