    light question

Yes, the meant that starter. There is another thing that you might try first though, look at the contacts in the end caps and see if they are corroded. If they are clean them off and this might solve your problem.

    Setting up a Quarantine Tank

That would work, except that once you put it in the smaller tank, the bacteria will die as there will be no bio load in it for them to eat off. Now you can still do this, but you have to put the filter in only when you have stock in the tank. An option I am considering for the same thing is to...

all my zebra danios are now deceased

First question, you still will need a filter, without carbon in it, to screen out particulate matter. Second question, even though you are using water from the 29, it is not fully cycled and you may get an ammonia spike. You can test often to see if this is occurring and than do water changes...

all my zebra danios are now deceased

For the ten, you need a heater, cover, and filter. Remember, this will only be a short use tank, 3 or 4 days. So do 25% water changes daily and it should be ok for that amount of time. Monitor the water carefully. You can also use some water from the other tank to get some bacteria.

temp changed when I did water change

On a related note, a good thermometer is a good investment too. If you have one of those stick on the outside of the tank strips, replace it. Make sure you have something that actually has some type of probe that goes in the water.

temp changed when I did water change

The general rule that has always been quoted to me about heaters, is 3 to 5 watts per gallon. If that sounds familiar, that is about the same thing people say about lighting too. You have 100 watts for 29 gallons, a little more than 3 watts per gallon. If you go up to 150 watts, you will have...

all my zebra danios are now deceased

You can continue with the water changes if you are very careful to measure how much you take out each time. Then when you add the new water, you add the amount of medication that was taken out with the water. I have also heard many things about salt being used, but don't know how much to use...

temp changed when I did water change

That heater should be enough to take care of the tank. It should bring the temp back up in a few hours. You could upgrade to a bigger heater to shorten that time if you wish, it is not a big investment.

    simple way to clean gravel

If this is new gravel, that idea is fine. It is similar to what you would do for cleaning sand too. However, if this is gravel that has been in the tank, you don't want to do this. You will mess up the biological filter portion of the tank and could possibly kill off your fish. As posted...

temp changed when I did water change

This might seem like an obvious question, but since you don't have nay information listed here on what size tank you have or any equipment, what size tank do you have and do you have a heater in it? If you have a heater, what size is it? As for the changes, while it is always better to get the...

all my zebra danios are now deceased

Sounds like ick on the fish, not sure about the white stuff on the plant. Get a good quality ick treatment and use it according to label. Don't do anymore water changes while you are treating as you will take the medicine out of the tank. If you have carbon in your filter, take it out while...

need help with setting up 90 gallon

Fish crazy? Is that why I just spent a boat load of money on a 120 gallon setup? In all seriousness, your point is well made and the big tank is preferable. Especially if it is a good deal. If it is a good deal, it should also defray some of the start up costs as compared to a 55 gallon. As...

need help with setting up 90 gallon

Actually, I don't think a 90 gallon tank would be too much for you, as long as you go slow with it and do it the right way. Now of course, it does cost more to keep, but is not that much more work than a 55 gallon tank. But it has to be your decision, and if you don't feel comfortable with...

    What are these?

Make sure you read the sticky threads on how to start a new tank and being new to aquariums. As far as a bigger tank, go for it. They are actually easier to keep up. 55 gallon setups can be had cheaply. Well, relatively that is, about $200 to $250. I say relatively because I am putting up a...

need help with setting up 90 gallon

I am in the process of putting up a 120 gallon tank. I have done a lot of looking at things as this is a upgrade in size from anything I have done before. I have done 55 gallon tanks before. As for the filters, I personally like the Emperor 400. It is a solid bio wheel filter and is highly...

    Standard Light Enough?

I'd make sure that your lights really are what you think they are. If they really are 18 watt power compacts, that should be giving you roughly the output of 200 watts of incandescent light. That would be more than enough for any plant. Your bulbs may not be of the proper spectrum, and that...

    PC lighting

You can not put a PC bulb in a standard fluorescent end cap. If you are looking for more light with an existing fixture, you can overdrive it and get 40-50% more light out of it. If you are looking to upgrade, there are plenty of nice retrofit kits out there. AH supply is the best in my view...

    Jebo 828 Canister Filter

I know that this is not one of the big name filters, but I have read some decent reviews of it. It can be had cheap on ebay. Now I know the old line of you get what you pay for, but I was wondering if this is a decent filter. Is anyone currently using it? How does it work and what do you think...

    Filter/heater question

I came across the attachment when I was doing some research on bio wheel vs. canister filters. It was discussed on a Magnum Pro 350 review page. Here is the link: Magnum Pro 350 reviews The first reviewer mentions the attachment, a Bio Wheel 60, and says it can be purchased at Petco.com for...

    Filter/heater question

I looked your filters, as listed in your signature and they are very nice. I also found that there is a bio wheel attachment that can be bought for most canister filters. That along with the in-line heaters would be the ideal solution. However, the canister filters are twice the price, or more...

Well, I already have the Pictus and he leaves the other fist alone. He generally hangs out with my Common Pleco. He is only about three inches at this point. I know that at some point, he may get to the point where I will have to move him into a different home.

    Filter/heater question

With all due respect, I would direct you to a thread on this very board regarding bio wheel filters: How Bio Wheels Work Additionally, your assertion that the canister holding more filter media makes them a better filter than a bio wheel does not add up. You admit that the bio wheel does hold...

    Filter/heater question

I have read review after review that states that the bio wheel filters are the best types of filters. And I have read review after review that state the Emperors are the best. Could you explain why you think the canisters are better?
  32. F

    Filter/heater question

I did consider canister filters, but went with the Emperor for a couple of reasons. First, cost, I can get the Emperor 400 for about $45 US each. Canisters are more expensive. Secondly, for that same money, I am getting more filter than I actually need, which is not bad to have. Third, the bio...

    Aquarium backgrounds...

For my current, entirely too small tank, I used aluminium foil as the background. I crumpled it up a bit to give it a wrinkled appearance. This gives it a kind of rocky quality and breaks up the light. For the big tank I am planning, I am making a background out of Styrofoam with PVC pipe caves...

    Filter/heater question

Again, previously posted on a different forum board. Please read and give me some feedback. I am in the process of planning either a 110 or 120 gallon freshwater planted aquarium. I am going to use a sand substrate and build my own background using Styrofoam and epoxy resin. The background will...

110 or 120 gallon proposed stocking list

I have had crabs in tanks before with no problems. Have you had problems with them in your tanks? Also, I was thinking about adding 3 Kuhli loaches to the list, do you think this would be too many scavenagers? Would it be ok with more sinking food?
