110 or 120 gallon proposed stocking list

Hi there, I have been reading this board for a while now, but this is my first post here. I have generally been reading this board and a one or two others, but posting only on one of the others. I posted this list on another forum and have not gotten too much comment on it. I have kept tanks up to 55 gallons in the past, so this is a move up for me and I would really appreciate any suggestions.

I am planning out a large aquarium, either 110 or 120 gallon. It will be planted and have a custom made background that has caves running in it.

I spent some time and put a list together of the fish I would like to put in it. I have tried to do a decent job of evenly dispersing the fish from top to bottom. Have a look and tell me what you think. I am open to suggestions about additions or changes to this list.

And for the tiger barb comments that are surely coming, I have kept them in a tank with other fish with no problems before. As long as they are in a decent size group, they are happy.


Top/middle strata fish:
12 Harlequin Rasbora
6 Red Painted Swordtails (have a few right now)
6 Dalmatian Lyretail Mollys
12 Zebra Danio

Middle/bottom strata fish:
15 Neon Tetras (have a few right now)
9 Green Tiger, Albino Tiger Barbs or Tiger Barbs (have a few right now)
6 Red Rainbow fish
6 Blind Cave Tetras

Bottom feeders/scavengers:
1 Common Pleco (have one right now)
1 Bristle Nose Pleco
6 Palateus Corydoras Catfish
2 Otocinclus Catfish
1 Pitcus Catfish
2 Red Claw Crabs

I wouldn't put the crabs in, they are likely to kill your bottom feeders and maybe your mids if they come near.

I have had crabs in tanks before with no problems. Have you had problems with them in your tanks? Also, I was thinking about adding 3 Kuhli loaches to the list, do you think this would be too many scavenagers? Would it be ok with more sinking food?

I've also seen many tank with problems with keeping crabs they are pretty great to have in SW tanks but since your keeping so many fairly small fish they might end up being a bed time snack. I'd remove them from your list and add a few more otos just up your shoaling fish lists.

I've never had crabs before, but I've heard they are prone to attacking small fish and long fins.

I would skip out on the pictus. They will most likely eat your tetras at night and any other smaller fish once they get larger. They also like to be in groups so I just say don't get 'em.

Well, I already have the Pictus and he leaves the other fist alone. He generally hangs out with my Common Pleco. He is only about three inches at this point. I know that at some point, he may get to the point where I will have to move him into a different home.

I like your fish choices, should make great combos. I'd have to agree about the crabs, heard some bad stories and I think adding the Kuhli's may overstock you a bit unless you are going to move the Pictus at a later date. On a personal note, I'd go for Cardinals rather than neons but I note that you already have a few neons, other than that, looks great

PS: I think the red rainbows will be the highlight!

If I can get the cardinals locally, I will get them in place of the neons. There are a couple of good fish stores around here, and a whole bunch of not so good ones.
