I have one of those tanks too - u can buy genuine filters for about a tenner or just buy big chunks of media and cut them to fit (which i do). I use the large open blue juwel filter sponge cut to fit in the biowheel (two round discs of course, about .5in thick) and first half of the filter bed...

Im sure this will be a repost - but the search doesn't appear to be working for me. Can the MTS population in a tank get to the stage where it is actually a bad thing? I seem to have thousands (at times it looks like the sand is alive!) - should i remove some?

It looks like sand will be the way to go - I think for now I'll just go with sand and some root tabs as the tank wont be heavily planted. I think ill be doing the rounds this weekend lokoing at the different sands all our local places have to offer!
