    outside tank/pond

Need to know how bad your winters are. You may need a tank in the condo to keep them over the winter. No koi in that small a pond. Koi live upwards of 30 years and grow to 30 to 36 inches. One or two common goldfish would be all you could support at maturity. Get bulkhead fittings to run...

should goldfish be given away at fairs

Can't say yes or no. Not sure where I got the attitude from but when I was a kid there were only two possibilities for goldfish. Either feeder fish or pond fish. Back then we did not have the large tanks and good filtration nor the understanding of biological filtration for the amonia cycle that...

Dammed cat has mauled and killed my fish!!

Much larger pieces than the ones you have, and 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. Added benefit it will give your pond the illusion of being much larger. Cats, dogs, racoons, oppossums, neighbors will not be able to move them.

    cheap tnk

If you have a local fish store very close to you see if you can do some work for them like tank cleaning, water changes ect., in barter for one of their "used" tanks and supplies. Good luck Todd

    plants floatin

Most pond plants should be planted in no hole pots using a mostly clay low organic soil. Even koi will not be able to uproot them after they have established their roots in this type of soil. Problem is you will not be able to take them out to repot them in larger pots or to divide them without...

Dammed cat has mauled and killed my fish!!

You have the right idea with the flat stone around the pond. Use larger pieces and place them completely around the pond overlaping the water by 6 to 8 inches. The cats will leave the pond alone. They do not like to overhang the water. Cheers Todd

    Betta jumped out

My male jumped out of a covered tank. He hit the opening for the filter (nice aim). I am not sure how long he was out but when I put him back in the tank, he could not swim and stuck to the filter intake. I turned off the filter and by the next day he was back to normal.

I need help. Pond fish are dying

get a pump and hose from the local rental shop or even one of the local underground pipe contractors in the area who use large pumps and hoses to drain wet areas where they need to excavate. Pump the water from the big pond to the small one. You will need to fill to a much higher level than...

    Finally Finished the Pond!!!!

Nice job on the pond it will look fantastic after the plants are added. Hope you have a warm place for the koi for winters and they do get quite large, upwards of 30 to 36 inches. I had four 4 inch koi in my 300 gal pond that I would put into a 120 gal tank in my basement for the winter. After...

    calcium in water

Hi folks, I recently set up a tank with blue glass gravel, colored glass rocks and mounted the hood under the tank just for a different kind of look. My wife put in some large, very old seashells while I was waiting to decide on type of fish to put in. I pulled out the seashells after a couple...

    Green pond

General rule of thumb here in Michigan (lots of summer sunlight) is filter capacity should be about 1/12 of pond capacity. ie 300 gallon pond would use a 25 gallon filter. Pump capacity turns over water at least twice an hour (more is better). Seed the filter with beneficial bacteria availiable...

    A very strange thought...

Since you live in Ohio your best bet would be two cold water ponds. One outside for the summer where you can put your fish in along with tropical water lillies and such, then move them into the inside pond for the winter. I live in Michigan and am giving serious thought to a tropical pond for...

    Hello All

New to this site but not new to fishkeeping. This seems to be a very good site with loads of good info. Noticed that someone mentioned that there were not many from Michigan here so add me to the short list. Todd
