    Setting Up New Large Tank

The water parameters are looking great a month later. 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 15 nitrate This is with 11 silver dollars who appear to be enjoying the tank immensely. However I'm still plagued with algae. The majority of it is brown. I can clean the glass and it is back again in a couple of days...

    Many Fish To Go

Hmm can't PM you - says you can't use the messaging system... perhaps it needs enabling by a mod as it is a new account? I could collect on saturday at midday(ish) or Sunday at closer to 4pm as I'm in the area both days. I'd need to double check my timings but thought I'd see when you were...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Nice one Terry. I won't be adding any more for a couple of weeks at least. My wife says the bogwood and rocks looks like a primary school snail garden and she's going to sort it out properly - result ;)

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Quick update! I've been monitoring ammonia/nitrite/nitrate throughout this process. I had a small bit of ammonia for the first couple of days (just the faintest touch of green in the yellow so not enough really to get a sensible reading on) but that quickly went bright yellow so that's good -...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Got 4 dollars in there now - they are moving about together and look calm - although they didn't seem interested in any food last night. I transfered a third of my filter media from the second tank into the second filter on the new tank (the first filter has already had a donation), and poured...

Bah I think that might have been autocorrect - I meant nitrites :) thanks muchly.

    Setting Up New Large Tank

That's interesting - my fish shop said the same, why is why I was considering putting some fish in straight away. I think I'll move some more filter material across and put a couple more fish in, monitoring closely with a view to whipping them out if I see any nitrates coming through - in which...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Is it just filter media I should move over or will rocks/gravel/bogwood help at all? How much can I move without screwing up the original tank ?

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Hah - I like it :) The nitrate in the tank is definitely orange not yellow. And the results are in - the tap water is the same.

    Setting Up New Large Tank

I must have misread something - I could have sworn it was 10% water changes daily which I could have coped with! Thanks for the advice chaps. I guess I'll put the dollars back in the old tank again and make a trip to Homebase… I did some quick tests to check there's nothing odd in the tank...

    Setting Up New Large Tank

Hi, I've bought a lovely 6x2x2.5 tank from a member of these forums (you may recognise it!). After an "interesting" experience transporting it I've got it mostly set up: I washed 80kg of Argos play sand by hand using a pillow under the tap - that took quite a while. I filled the tank and...

Aww that's like a member of family! He'd definitely like it here - the other one certainly does - he spends half his time snoozing peacefully in the corner and the rest of the time "dancing". He likes algae wafers best - what are you feeding yours and the bgk ? (o and loves cucumber and courgette)

    Black Ghost Knifefish Approx 6"

Well apart from an expendable tetra (!) the smallest would be a couple of barbs that are 1.5" I guess... Tempting me with the plec… I'll be having to do water changes every 2 days or something if I'm not careful hehe. (I've got one nice big plec already and I hear two can be a little messy)

    Black Ghost Knifefish Approx 6"

Hi, I live in Leicester. I've got a 320 l tank atm with a mixture of big and smaller fish. I'm getting a larger tank for the bigger fish and keeping the smaller ones in the original tank. This should be fairly soon... I'm on the case! I'm definitely after a bgk for the bigger tank. Would he be...

    Stock Advice Please - Stick

Thanks - that's really useful info. I do like the smaller fish, but to be honest the loaches, sharks and dollars are the ones that really float my boat. And the big pleco because he dances ;) I don't think I'd get the same enjoyment from the tank without these, so I'll start planning for a...

    Stock Advice Please - Stick

I was afraid that might be the answer! From what I'm reading you can't really keep the iridescents - they'll outgrow pretty much anything you put them in. It would seem a shame to keep them for a few years and then have to get rid of them. I doubt anyone would buy them big anyway? I've...

    Stock Advice Please - Stick

Hi folks, I'm after a little advise if possible. I have a well-established tank that has been in my house for a year (and set up at my friends for years before that)!wwwd. Over the last few months I've started putting more fish in it, and I've done the typical thing of listening to The Man At...

Hi, Here's Bob! I couldn't get a picture of it, but he's got a huge fin on his back and he is fab :) I've had him for about 3 weeks. He goes from sulking in the corner for a few days to dancing and singing and generally doing caberet! However Bob is rather large - 14" maybe? And he does tend...

A Few Dead Fish In The Last Two Weeks

Thanks Flutter - that's really helpful :) Mr Jokerrr - you are also wise hehe I didn't spot the gallons bit (sigh). I'll keep monitoring the fish. If everything seems happy then if I can get confirmation at some point that the tank can hold more, I'll go for more of the same rather than...

A Few Dead Fish In The Last Two Weeks

OK I got some more testing kits today. Just in case - copper 0 Nitrate 25 Ammonia - hard to tell but either none or the next one up... there may have been a very slight tinge of green in the yellow. Everybody looks healthy to me so fingers crossed...
