    Sad, But Very Happy

I just got myself out of the convict business yesterday... A few things I've learned: 1. Baby convicts can be quite a bother. If you don't remove them to another tank they will be eaten eventually (or at least that's what happened in my tank). 2. If the male wants to mate and the female...

Emergency -- Female Con Nearly Killed By Mate

I put in the divider, and she's recovering slowly. The tank is only 29US gallons, they would probably kill any dithers. As for the selection of this pair, I originally started with THIRTEEN convicts, and this pair formed first. There was no randomly throwing two fish at each other. I think...

Emergency -- Female Con Nearly Killed By Mate

She started to look a bit better, so I put her back in the tank. Five minutes later, he was chasing her like I've never seen... trying desperately to kill her it seems. I put her back in the bucket, I'll be purchasing a divider...

Emergency -- Female Con Nearly Killed By Mate

My mated pair of Cons don't do it right... they make babies like normal, and then after a week or so, all the babies disappear, and the male starts terrorizing the female. I'm thinking of adding a second female to try and divert his attention... I don't exactly have a hospital tank right now...

*new Member, New Tank, New Fish*

"Dropsy" is really more a symptom than a disease, it's when the body of a fish swells up, and the scales stick out sort of like a pinecone. When your fish is that sick that it puffs out, it's typically too late to do anything about it. On the plus side, I don't really think he has dropsy. I...

Feed Or Not To Feed While On Holiday

I would generally avoid the long term feeders, but I think we need more information to achieve a plan. What kinds of fish do you have, tank size, etc?

    Convicts In A 29 Gallon

My cons actually ate their first set of babies... they're working on their 2nd right now. There's more than one LFS in my area that takes in Cons, and one of them even trades for cash (10% of the shelf price... it's not much but with 50 cons at a time, it can cover basic supplies).

That's my setup, exactly. They're just fine in there.

The dimensions are 30 x 12 x 18 (in inches). There is no brace down the middle.

29 (us) Gallon Tank Is Bowing Slightly

The title says it all. I noticed that the front panel glass on my 29g is bowed out slightly, only a millimeter or two, but it is bowing out. Is that normal?!? What if anything should I do? It's not currently leaking, is less than a year old, well looked after, etc.

Holes are not natural... I would research that.

    Goldfish In A Small Container

I just told my fiance that I want to put one common goldie into a 55gal and watch it grow for 35 years. She told me I was nuts, and then followed with the "don't they do best in a bowl anyway?" Even when people are constantly around proper fishkeeping, they still can sometimes be hard to...

    Goldfish In A Small Container

I have some friends that won a Goldie at a fair, expected it to die in a day, and when it didn't never bothered to get a better tank. It lived in a little smallworld bowl, which was seriously about 8"x 3"x5" Less than one gallon for sure... They would change the water when it started to float...

    100 Gallon Stocking Options

A breeding pair can fill a tank really fast. The guy who bred my cons has a 55 that is loaded with them, and he started with two. The group antics are actually quite awesome.

    Disaster!

They definitely have seemed to settle their differences. The female is all colored up again, and they're back at their usual antics. I expect babies again soon.

    Disaster!

My convict pair has turned on each other... the female is bossing the male all over the place, even though she's smaller. To make matters worse, the fry are GONE. I think maybe the male ate them, which could be why she's so angry. My biggest question is, what could've caused that, and will...

    Breeding Convict Cichlids

If you let them pair up naturally, it can make for a stronger pair bond. Still, getting Cons to breed is like "add water and fish." If you had a bigger aquarium with plenty of hiding places (55), you could probably get away with leaving quite a few in there.

    Getting New Fish..

A pair M/F of convicts will fill your tank really fast with babies. If you don't want babies, you gotta get rid of all of 'em or keep two females.

    Getting New Fish..

Neither. Get yourself a 100+ if you want Sevs... they're really big full size. See the pinned topic on Severums in the NW Cichlid area.

    Several Convict Fry

I will also be faced with this problem soon enough, I'm probably going to get another tank and put in some kind of predatory fish. Once the fry are freeswimming enough, scoop out a couple and there's a free lunch.

    Can I Add Convict Cichlids

With a 4ft tank, you might be able to get away with keeping all four, if you provide enough hiding spots.

All Glass Aquarium Volumes In Liters

IE7 I tried to put the data in like this: Tank [space here] Dimensions [space here] Liters and it came out like this: Tank Dimensions Liters This was regardless of using the tab key on the keyboard or the spacebar. It looked great in the WYSIWYG editor, but displayed horribly after being...

All Glass Aquarium Volumes In Liters

Being as I'm from the US, I'm used to talking about my tanks in US Gallons. A lot of you out there are posting from the UK, and prefer the metric system. Personally, I also like metric, but never got around to figuring out tank sizes in Liters... until now. Here's a quick reference guide for...

    Can I Add Convict Cichlids

I started with 14 Convicts, and now I'm down to 2 with a mess of fry. When they reproduce, they get NASTY to the other fish. I would get at minimum a 20gal long (US) tank, let the 4 be in there, and wait until a pair forms. The parenting behaviors of those fish are amazing to watch, I suggest...

    Convict Fry!

I'm not sure exactly how many fry made it to this stage, but there's over 20 in the picture (and that's not even close to all of them). I don't have a really great LFS around that carries frozen brine shrimp, just the freeze dried stuff. The hatchery and some eggs cost me a grand total of...

    Convict Fry!

I saw the tank where my adult fish were spawned... a friend of a friend of a friend. I know that we're supposed to think in the best interests of our aquatic friends, but I think he might have the right idea with Cons... He has a 55gal, with about 50 cons in it, of varying sizes. Dad is this...

    Convict Fry!

They're black and grey, the fish in my avatar is similar to them. That one was one of the four that didn't pair up, and was taken to a LFS on Monday. So... how do I know when to start putting in food for the fry? I know they won't eat cichlid pellets yet, way too big for them.

Urgent: Betta With Intestine Hanging Out?

I'm guessing this all was caused by poor water conditions thanks to keeping him in a bowl. Personally I'd never again keep a betta in anything smaller than a 5 gallon filtered aquarium, but even those are possible to mess up... You shouldn't have to be adding anti algae chemicals, or any other...

    Convict Fry!

I tried to get some pics, but the camera wasn't picking it up. They're in the tadpole wiggler stage, lots of little pairs of eyes. It doesn't look like a huge batch of fry, but then again this was their first attempt.

    Convict Fry!

Well my Cons went and spawned. I know it's not a big deal to most, but I've never had a pet produce offspring before, they're dutifully defending their wigglers against "attacks." I wasn't even sure that a pair had formed, but now I know for sure. I'll find a new home for the remaining 4...

    Question About Convicts

There are three main color varieties for convicts: Black (standard), Pink, and Marble. Marble is like a mix of Pink and Black, and is the rarest. Some black convicts are almost totally black, some are quite light in color. They may get more colorful as they mature, or they may not. They...

    Photos Of My Convicts

A pair is my eventual goal. I was originally given 14! If I luck into another tank (I know a guy who's looking to GIVE AWAY a 55...), I may keep them all, but that would have to be soon.
