My cons actually ate their first set of babies... they're working on their 2nd right now. There's more than one LFS in my area that takes in Cons, and one of them even trades for cash (10% of the shelf price... it's not much but with 50 cons at a time, it can cover basic supplies).

A breeding pair can fill a tank really fast. The guy who bred my cons has a 55 that is loaded with them, and he started with two. The group antics are actually quite awesome.

They definitely have seemed to settle their differences. The female is all colored up again, and they're back at their usual antics. I expect babies again soon.

If you let them pair up naturally, it can make for a stronger pair bond. Still, getting Cons to breed is like "add water and fish." If you had a bigger aquarium with plenty of hiding places (55), you could probably get away with leaving quite a few in there.

A pair M/F of convicts will fill your tank really fast with babies. If you don't want babies, you gotta get rid of all of 'em or keep two females.

I will also be faced with this problem soon enough, I'm probably going to get another tank and put in some kind of predatory fish. Once the fry are freeswimming enough, scoop out a couple and there's a free lunch.

With a 4ft tank, you might be able to get away with keeping all four, if you provide enough hiding spots.
