I'm a month in now, and ammonia was dropping, nitrite rising. Now my ammonia is dropping slowly, and I keep dosing back to 4 but my nitrite is staying at 0 after 24 hour tests. Is my nitrite likely to rise and fall faster than my ammonia? I have a deep green and a light blue. Odd.

Bit of an update. After emptying my filter, taking out loads ofthe stuff from the bottom of it, the water is a lot clearer. There are less of the particles and the bits of white fluff on the glass and pipe are turning brown. I think I'm getting there :)

This looks ifentical to my problem. I'd be interested to see how you get on.

That's good to hear. My edge never had it but I did a fish in cycle and by a miracle nothing died.

Cool. The ammonia must be off the scale because it's not dropped but I have nitrite and nitrate now. It'll get there :)

It's all over the glass too. Will it go on its own?

Water test.... High nitrite, oxygen and 30 degrees = white furry growth?

Also, it was touching 29 degrees which may not have helped. The bottom of my spray bar had a plug in it so there was not very much flow. And the white fluff on the air line hose that looks identical to the floating debris suggests algae.

Inside the bottom of the filter was full of this white stuff. Very very cloudy and full of white specks. So I binned the water in there and took out most of the debris, and added two carbon sachets to see if that helps. Seems better already.

The heater and air line have both got a white fur on now. And the side of the glass has some white growth. I think the gravel has some in too. I think it's algae then? Or some sort of growth. I may take the polyfilter out though. Apparently it's not great for cycling.

Hmm. I washed the gravel twice. The filter is all new too. Maybe it's the polyfilter membrane I added. I'll open it up and see.

Sorry, been a long long day. It's a new tank, no fish or plants. Just water and bog wood. Been cycling two weeks, ammonia is still a dark green and nitrite rising steadily. Could it be bacteria life forms floating about? Will they go?

Two or so weeks in, I have what looks like dust in my water. Loads of tiny little particles in the water like its fizzy. It's not air bubbles and the water isn't cloudy as such, but I am getting tiny bits of white algae like growth on the glass. Ammonia is now at 4 and nitrite at 2. Water...

It's 165 litres. I've read about bettas and guppies, but I have two rainbows and my male better in my fluval edge with no issues whatsoever. Never even been near each other! My lfs told me the Angels would be ok in my tank. It's 525mm square and slightly taller.

It's not the air pump/stone that's the issue. It's the power of the filter outlet causing a constant clockwise flow. The outlet pipe on the right has holes down the entire length to aerate the water. But also causes it to spiral given the shape of my tank. So I disconnected it at the too and let...

No unfortunately neither the filter or air pump have a control valve. However, the spray bar on the filter outlet can be removed. I've taken the bar off, on the right of the pic with the curved end. So now it's directly into the top of the tank. Problem solved :)

My juwel tubes arrived and tonight is the first time I've seen my tank lit up. It's revealed something to me. Clearly, I have a powerful clockwise circulation from my outlet filter pipe. The bubble bar is being sucked round and before the bubbles can rise, they are being circulated round...

Im about a week in now, just want to make sure I'm on the right track. I added some media from my edge to help and now I think I'm getting going. My ammonia was going very dark green. 8ppm+ Now I'm on 4ppm ammonia, 0.5ppm nitrite ish. Not bright blue, slight tinge of lilac in there now...

I have a male Betta and two male guppies with fancy tail colours in my fluval edge. Never had a single issue at all.

Yep all the pva is out. It was only a few drips thankfully, and the majority went on the brace bar. I've been online and ordered some Perspex sheet cut to fit exactly instead. As for the bacteria, I'm hoping to see a drop in the ammonia now. I tested my edge for the first time ever yesterday...

Ok, instead of messing about with the powder, I bought this This lists no ingredients, doesn't foam when I shake it, so I bought a medicine dropper from the chemist. I'll try 5ml and see from there. Is this the right stuff to use?

Thanks fluttermoth. I'm tempted to make a solution, then add drops til my ten litres reaches 4ppm. Then I know a drop to 10l ratio of the solution :)

I have no idea what it is then. It's white powder, the bloke that gave it to me said its highly concentrated and did a test with it. A grain in a test tube turned the water yellow.

It's in powder form, the aquatics place use it to cycle large ponds and large tanks in their shop. I'd guess it's industrial strength stuff that dissolves in water. I'm assured it's safe. I'll start with 10l and 1gramme and see how I go.

Right. I have obtained some ammonia. It's extremely strong, white powder from a local aquatics place. They let me have a bag for nothing. I plan on a trial and error style test in a bucket, say a litre with some scales to weigh it. Eg, 1gramme per litre makes x ppm therefore times that by 165...

Thank you. So 4ppm then, is that 4 parts ammonia to one part of water? How do you know how much ammonia makes that much? Is there a conversion sum to do to work out ml ammonia dosage to achieve that concentration?
