The males make bubble nests i believe. if you google betta bubble nests you can what they look like. some bettas go crazy when they make nests, making the nests huge.

Males have the more impressive fins and the females have the smaller fins. I would recommend a male as the are nicer to look at but its down to personal taste. There are also many types. In the betta pages of this forum there ia a great guide to what types you can get and colours. Hers the link...

I have a betta in with cardinal tetras and penguins and they are not interested in each other at all. The betta keeps himself to himself. now and again he will play withthe cardinals but there is no nipping and he doesn't flare at them either. I think its down to the indevidual fish you have.
