Hi!

Please can someone help? I've had fish for a grand total of 2 months and I have my first disease!!! I have no idea what it is and I don't know if it’s contagious!!!

I've just been looking at my fish and I have noticed that my Green Sail fin Molly has a strange eye. It looks like cataracts and is bulging. I have been trying to get a photo of this but not having much luck. This is the best I can do! I'm going to keep trying to get a better photo but if anyone can help in the mean time it would be appreciated!!!
:(

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

If the eye is bulging out it's popeye.
You will need a bacterial med.
Can you issolate the fish.

Its a 120l tank, I have 4 Mollys (2 damation, 2 green sailfin) a Betta, 2 dwarf gourmi, 2 kissing gourmi, 5 platy, 9 cardinals, 2 cory and a plec.
PH is 7.6, nill on nitrates and nitrites and .25 ammonia.

I'm looking up this pop eye thing, really doesn't look nice. I can't iscolate the fish as i don't have another tank (No room for another one) or breeding net (but can get one)
What can i do now as i have no meds?

Your tanks abit overstocked.
Water change you have ammonia reading have to find out why.
What filter do you have in the tank.
How often do you maintain the tank.
Do you over feed.

Do water change as that can help with sick fish when water quality is bad.
What is your tap nitrate reading, do you have any live plants.

Your tanks abit overstocked. - Guy in fish shop advised that it was ok so i went with it. (saying that he wants to sell fish
Water change you have ammonia reading have to find out why.
What filter do you have in the tank. - Its a juwel that came with the tank (rekord 800)
How often do you maintain the tank. - i do weekley water changes, last one was on friday. when i change the water i also hoover the gravel
Do you over feed. - I feed one a day and leave it a day once a week

Do water change as that can help with sick fish when water quality is bad.
What is your tap nitrate reading, do you have any live plants. i have all live plants. the water nitrate is 0 (yellow on the api master test kit).

Juwel power heads are not the best.
I would maybe think of adding another filter to cope with your stocking.
A fluval 2 or 3.
How long have you had the ammonia reading.
How long has the tank been set up.

The tank has been set up for about 2 months.
the amonia reading goes from 0 to .25. it fluctuates alot.

begining to feel like i've been miss sold alot of things now!!

I would go out and buy another filter to help with the stocking.
I would keep doing water changes till the reading 0.
Increase aeration.
I would also buy anti internal bacteria med by interpet for the popeye.

My boy freind an i have been comparing the images on google with the fish. i doesn't really look like them.
i'm going to do water changes daily for a few days and see if that does anything. if not i'll go buy some med.

Thanks for the help.

Probably the ammonia reading making his eyes swell.
Water changes.
Good Luck.

just looking at your stocking, is your betta a male?! it really should not be in a community tank and definatly not with gouramis. it could very well have attacked your molly causing an eye injury, and the ammonia reading could be aggrivating it even more.
you can get a product called ammo-lock which will stop the ammonia being so toxic for the fish but only water changes will remove the ammonia.
start off by doing water changes (40%) daily until your ammonia is down to 0

male bettas should really be kept on their own unfortunatly, females can go in a community tank but not males.

the eye could be falling out?
Missing globe: In some cases, the eye (globe) is so severely damaged that it may fall out or be reabsorbed by the fish. Fish have an amazing ability to heal, and as long as there are no underlying disease problems, they will frequently recover from a lost eye. Once the eye itself is gone, scar tissue will quickly fill the orbit (socket), and within a matter of several weeks, the orbit will be filled with new tissue. While this may not be cosmetically pleasing, many fish do quite well with one functional eye.
so if you fish died it must have a disease!

Diseases that affect the eyes of pet fish are quite common. Diseased eyes may appear cloudy, exophthalmic (popped out), hemorrhagic (bloody), microphthalmic (small), or even missing. Common causes of eye disease in pet fish include trauma, infection, gas bubble disease (the "bends"), parasites and neoplasia (cancer). so i would be quick to identify what your fish has!

warning:pop-eye is very Contagious and all contamanated fish must be placed into hospital tank!

hi, one of my rainbows had a similar swollen eye the other day but i put it down to the fish had damaged it while being chased by the male trying to mate. I think when i fish has popeye both eye's would be affected.
Has i have not had any trouble with disease in my tank for a long time nor have i added any fish and my water quailty is very good that is all i could put it down to. My rainbow's eye has now alomost back to normal now.
