Last night I noticed a few of my african cichlids were trying to rub against the lava rock and the sand. What could this be? I looked to see if they had what looked like salt on them. No salty look.

Kribs aren't very aggressive but are cichlids and you could fit a pair in there.

I would just get rid of your fish now if you really want discus just to be safe, also discus require a lot of care and different water conditions

What size tank, how many of what fish do you have in it? Some fish just always sit on the bottom while others naturally like the top.

I believe it does remove trace elements, but I think plants do okay with it anyways? not 100% sure, I use carbon in my filter and it works okay with my live plant.

You don't often have to worry about oxygen levels, unless you far overstock. Some people just like air ornaments!

In the salinity you mean 1.024? Also you could lower the Ph depending on what fish you're going to be keeping. In terms of high nitrates the best thing is massive water changes, and siphoning the substrate can help.

I don't know of any specific brands but I do know there is something that sort of coats the fish so they can heal.

I am looking in to buying a hydrometer and a test kit. What do I all need in a test kit?? One I found has: ammonia nitrite nitrate alkalinity ph I assume this is sufficient?

is this a maturity thing, because he is starting to turn yellow (not quickly I got him like that) After I posted this I checked on the tank and his pelvic fins have black on them. I am pretty sure that means he is mature or dominant. He is a male.

Never get 2 gouramis unless your tank is 40+gallons. I had a bad experience in my 30 gallon with 2 gouramis. One was constantly eating the others fins until he actually killed him. Gouramis are very territorial at times.

So, I think I'll use crushed coral for substrate. Then I would like to get 1 clown fish, 1 royal gramma, 1 goby, and, if I can find one a pearly jawfish? Could anyone recommend a complete clean up crew? Oh, I like blood shrimp too.
