used to be black sand (tahitian moon) wich i still have in one of my tanks, But now it has to be ADA Amazonia for the planted areas and ADA saruwak sand for the foreground. Why because the growth has been mega compared to anything elses.

it would be hard to tell when the salt was washed out id imagine, unlike dirt you can physically see.

do small drops though and cover it else youll end up with white spots on you wood that stand out untill it grows in. :rolleyes:

adding carbon wont really do much, your not getting the turnover through the filter you need, especially if its been running a while a clogged up from what it was new. I would look at getting a bigger filter or a second filter. I have that size tank and had a 750lph external on and with similar...

not familiar with that filter but a quick google of the pictures, It doesnt look like it provides much turnover or flow to cope with that size tank.

use super glue gel (cynocrylyte) and glue them too wood or rocks. quick and easy and they wont come free. can even glue it under water

go through the hundreds of pictures and journals online, get a feel for what style you like and go from there, most will also have a plant list so you can get an idea what goes with what. Just saying help plant/scape my tank is hard as theres soooo many styles and plants. and its how you learn...

remember turnover and flow are different things, you want the best turnover you can afford, you can slow the velocity by longer spraybars.

common plecs grow huge, and two male gouramis in that size tank will soon fight untill ones dead.

yes they will be fine, I have had plants shipped on friday and not planted untill monday plenty of times and they have been in a box the whole time :)

thoose bars depend on which tank you have, some have removable bars, some dont its dependant on age of the tank.

dechlorinator is being discussed in another thread, personally not needed. also you say temp match when refill the tank, when it rains in nature its not matched, hence cooler water changes can trigger spawning.

I float and old bag (that fish come in) on the surface and pout onto that. On my bigger tank i put the hose onto the wood and that diffuses it.

I have my water report in my hand, Chlorine Free = Min 0.10 Mean 0.47 Max 0.77 Chlorine Total = Min 0.19 Mean 0.52 Max 0.81 So if you read the article linked and what others have said it backs up chlorine at tap levels has none or negligible effect on filter bacteria. sorry those are in mg/l...

the bunches of "grass" you really need to split them up in to 1/2mm diameter bunches and plant them, they will do soo much better. They also will go a bit brown in the first few weeks.

Ive not used de-chlorinator in years, and always washed my filters/media trays under a tap and never had any issues, illness or disease in any tank. Have also never personally seen any evidence of wiping out a filter colony.
