    "Bacteria in a Bottle" Products

I have never understood how these products work As far as I am aware, bacteria involved in the Nitrogen cycle do not form dormant spores when "times get tough". They die without a constant supply of nutrients, fresh water & oxygen People are constantly reminded that if your filter stops running...

    Carbon in filter causing HITH

i have read discussions on other forums about charcoal in filters causing hith in cichlids. Discus and Oscars were the two species specifically mentioned Is there any scientific basis for this theory? Is it based on some sort of scientific study?

    Tank Scaping So Far.

I am going to disagree re the black background. I have this on my tank, and with hindsight, should have gone for something lighter. For one, it gives the tank a gloomy look. And secondly, I have found that a lot of my fish (SA cichlids) will turn darker in an attempt to blend in.

    Nutritional Value Of Blood Worms

Tcamos, Thanks for the comprehensive answer. With my fish, I have been feeding less and less processed food (flake, pellets etc) and more and more frozen and freeze dried worms etc.

    Nutritional Value Of Blood Worms

It is often mentioned that blood worm are of low nutritional value and are mainly composed of roughage and water.   But I have often read that people use blood worm for conditioning prior to breeding. How is this so if b w is of low nutritional quality?   Also, when I kept Discus, I feed them on...

Cold Water Pellets For Tropical Fish

So I recently got a South American Lungfish.   He gets fed fish, prawns, mussle etc, but I also want to feed him a pellet to cover any deficencies he might be missing in his diet. Hikari Massivore has been suggested. But it is very expensive. 2 or 3 x the price of the other Hikari products.  ...

Discus Not Eating ( 3 Weeks Now )

Yup, it does sound like it. Metro is very good at treating this. I followed a slightly different program when I used this treatment. Apparently it is active for 48 hours. So I left for 2 days before doing a w c. and redosing,

    Rope/reed Fish And Butterfly Fish

My pair of Butterflies were easy to feed They ate anything from pellets to flake, frozen food, freeze dried food. Etc.   Mine learnt to come right to me when I was feeding and they ate whatever went in before it sank.

    Eheim Jeager Calibration

I have just put 2 new Eheim Jeagers (300W)  into my 500L Discus tank.   The instructions talk about calibration, but it is not very clear if this is necessary or not.   I have been monitoring the temps for a week or so now, and they seem more or less ok. About 1*C different to the thermometer...

My Firemouth Its Not Growing At All...

Current tank volume aside.   I have had this happen to me a few times over the years. I buy a fish put it in my tank, and it stays more or less the same size as the day I bought it. IMO, the stunting could have happened at the fish shop. And I have an new policy that I won't buy fish that have...

    Rain Water

Hi All, So I have a water butt attached to one of the drainpipes off my roof. The question is, can I use it in my tank? I have done a bit of research online, but can't find anything conclusive. There are arguments for and against. I have seen people say no, some people say it is ok as long as...

    Advice Needed On Cichlid

The Bbc And Why It Should Be Commercialised

I think the BBC has really gone downhill with their programes recently. Pigeon Blood Discus / Diamond Blue Discus

Discus aren't suitable for your setup unfortunately. Unless you are breeding, they should be kept in groups of 6+. The temps they need 28-30*C will be too warm for the other fish. Andthe barbs will possibly nip trhem. I also think that your tank is too small for your current stock as it is...

    Stocking Algorithm

What I find as a shortcoming of the inch/gal rule, and most other stocking calculations, is they don't take into account: 1) the behaviour of the fish. Fast swimming active fish need more room, and less other fish around then than slower, more sedate fish 2) the fact that the inch/gal rule...

    Filtration On 520l

More than enough. I have never understood why so many Malawi keepers get the idea that they to get a huge amount of current. I have seen various tv documentaries on Lake Malawi, and at the depth where many species are found, the water is still.

I would imagine 1 FX5 is more than enough. If I remember correctly it is rated to 2000L? I have an Aquamanta on my 550L tank So far, I have found it ok. But it is a bit of a squeeze to get it into the cupboard under the tank

Extremely Finicky Fire Eel - Need Advice

I would mix the earthworms and the other food in a container and leave it for a few hours. The other food will pick up the smell of the earthworms. And the Eel, might be convinced that way. I have found this does work sometimes with difficult fish.
