    Koi and Sturgeon

We bought 2 about 2 years ago now. One dissappeared (we think down the bottom drain!) as they were quite small - maybe 4 inches long. The one that survived is now nearly 1.5ft long! It's a monster! Ours is a Diamond Back. We put the string around recently in an attempt to put off a heron which...

    Koi and Sturgeon

the pond is about 9 feet by 8 by 4.5 deep, the plan was to make it even deeper but my bf hit the water table when he was digging and had to fill it in a bit :S here's the pond: and this is what happened when I just took the photo I only fed them about an hour ago!

    fish suitable for 15 gallon

Hi, I realise 15 gallon is small for a marine tank! But, what fish would be suitable? Cheers :shifty:

    making up salt solution

I am trying to increase the salinty of my puffer tank. It currently is at 0.008. Does anyone have the figures (in grams) of marine salt needed per litre to make up salt solution at SG 0.008. I have tried searching on the web but can only find information for higher concentrations. Thanks

the rainbow rock looks very nice as well - where did you get hold of it?

    *help* sluggish green spotted puffers

Arghhhhhhh I have done the changes and upped the salt concentration by 0.002, this was a couple of days ago. My plan was to retest the water today and perhaps do another water change. BUT, one of the puffers looks very ill! (the other is fine though). It only started looking ill today, seemed to...

    Koi Problem

We have a similar problem, but the fish has been like for months. This is a 15 yr old goldfish though!

    Euthanasia by Freezing ?!?!?

A person exposed to -18 degrees c would be dead in less than a few minutes. Heat loss is relative to an organisms surface area: volume ratio. A fish is smaller therefore will have a very high SA:vol ratio and it will lose it's body heat 100's of times faster than a human. You stay alive because...

    Euthanasia by Freezing ?!?!?

Second thing, pain is something your brain percieves in response to an impulse sent from a receptor. If fish don't have the receptors or the part of brain that recieves the impulse they won't feel pain. Fish have a primitive nervous system, they are unlikely to feel pain in the way we do...

    Euthanasia by Freezing ?!?!?

A freezer would reduce the temperature VERY quickly and this would decrease enzyme activity at a quick rate, stopping respiration. I'm no fish biologist (my area is human anatomy) but I would take a guess at this, coupled with the lack of oxygen entering the system would mean the fish dies from...

    Worst Fish

I remember inheriting a catfish from my aunt, I think it was called an atlantic catfish? Well it grow very large and ate half my goldfish, as a kid I wasn't too pleased. I remember coming home from school and finding it with half a fish sticking out of it;s mouth!

    *help* sluggish green spotted puffers

the stats read as: Ammonia = 0.1mg/litre Nitrites = 0.1 mg/litre Nitrates = 100mg/litre pH = 8 SG = approx 0.006? so the recommended action is a 25% water change tonight, followed with daily 25% changes (until readings are normal!), slowly increasing SG to approx 1.005 at approx 0.002/week?

I bought a hydrometer today, shall test the water and check the salt later tonight, cheers ! :)

    *help* sluggish green spotted puffers

Is water change of about 10% a week right? and yes, marine salt The tank is rather on the small side (from reading that article) it;s about 12-15g, although I think the fish are more like 1.5inch rather than 2 (having a good look this morning!). I haven't checked the water quality recently! now...

    platy's giving birth

thanks! B) hopefully we shall have another couple of babies survive in the morning then!!

    platy's giving birth

We have a tank with about 12 platy's. The females are obviously pregnant and we have had a couple of fry survive so far (this is just letting them be!). One of the females have spent the last few hours hiding inbetween the plants and I figured she is probably going to give birth. Just a couple...

    *help* sluggish green spotted puffers

We have 2 GSP in the same tank. We have had the puffers about a year and they are 2 inches long. The puffers are very sluggish (spend alot of time sulking in the corner - certainly more now than they used to be!!). I was wondering whether our tank has been set up wrong? What is the...
