    Fish In Cycle Advice

Yes, I do use a dechlorinator. I had been using the API tap water conditioner, but I got some Prime last week which I have been using since.   I definitely know now not to remove the filter media, but unfortunately I didn't always so I'm sure that stalled my cycle.   If I remove the little...

    Fish In Cycle Advice

Hello - I know a fish in cycle is not recommended. I've learned since I started this aquarium, but the fish are here and I'm committed to finishing this.   Background - 5.5 gallon tank, 3 glofish/danios, 2 golden snails. I have city tap water. Medium hardness. No detectable ammonia, nitrites, or...

    Recommend Betta Tank

Ninjouzata - you can buy a lid for the Fluval chi. I'm actually looking at the Marineland Hex or the Tetra crescent - so many options but nothing is exactly what I have pictured.! I have a good LFS that has a whole wall of snails, so I don't think that will be a problem. They also have some...

    Cycle Just The Filter?

Thanks for the detailed explanation fluttermoth & TwoTankAmin. Totally makes sense!

    Recommend Betta Tank

lrhodes - I know, it seems like an insane price, but I spend 9 hours a day sitting here so I'm willing to spend the money on something that will look nice. Although I'm now leaning toward the Fluval Chi. I wish Tetra had the LED cube in a 5 gallon.

    Cycle Just The Filter?

Can you "cycle" a smaller tank by adding the filter to a larger tank and running it for X number of days, then put it in back in the original tank (testing the water of course)? Or is it just better to put filter media into the smaller filter from the larger tank? Just speculating out of pure...

    Recommend Betta Tank

Hi all - Can anyone recommend a specific tank for a betta and perhaps 1 small snail for company - one that doesn't look like your normal aquarium? I want to put a small tank on my work desk (can do 5 gallons), but I don't want it to look like your standard rectangle aquarium. I've been looking...

I love it with the curve in it.

    Another 3D Background Project

Did the second coat of Drylok.    -The second coat went on much more easily with a bristled brush over the foam brush because the foam one had too much friction with the texture left by the first coat.   -As before, don't skimp on the amount you're brushing on. It goes on way easier the more you...

Okay... Time To Fess Up... :)

I am fairly brand-new to fishkeeping, but I've done a lot of research since I started. This thread is actually very helpful so I don't feel like a demon fish-killer.   Got a 5.5 gallon starter tank because it was on sale. And I thought I was doing well because I had gone there looking for a tiny...

Fish Pal For African Dwarf Frogs

Hi all - I'm in the process of moving my fish from a 5.5 gallon to a 54 gallon. It will probably be a couple/few weeks still - big tank isn't cycled yet but I'll be doing a planted cycle so we'll see. I was originally just going to shut down the 5 gallon when I moved the fish over, but now I've...

    Smells

Just an update - found some scum on the inside rim of my tank which was contributing to the smell. I'm now in the habit of wiping down the rim with a paper towel every time I do a water change, and it's much better now. Smells more regular river and less polluted river.

    Another 3D Background Project

I decided to skip the cement and go straight to Drylok. I got a quart of latex based Drylok and tinted it with 1 capful of Buff color quikrete tint. I'm going for a sandstone kind of look. I think the quart is going to be the perfect size. I used about 1/4 of the can on this coat. The...

    Another 3D Background Project

I have a black background I'm going to just tape to the outside of the tank, and I think I'm going to put several tall plants on the left side to balance out the background on the other. I'm thinking of also adding kind of a little "stone" barrier running through the center of the tank to...

    Another 3D Background Project

Decided I wanted the one side to reach to the top of the tank. Added a few ledges for plants. A little cave and some "stones" that are kind of supposed to look like they tumbled down on the left side. I'm going to leave that wall open for the filter intake and the heater. This is not the best...

    New 36 Gallon Bowfront

A pretty tank - I really like your gravel! Subtle and calming. Is "Golden Wonder" the type of fish or the fish's name. I'm a newbie and am not that familiar with the different fish species yet :)

What Do You Do With Fish Babies?

This might be the stupidest question ever, but here goes. I haven't had to think of this yet because 2 of the 3 fish I currently have are sterile (glofish). But I'm thinking ahead to when I move them to my larger tank. I'll round out the school with 3 more glofish, but I was thinking of also...

    Plant Recommendations

Hi all!   I found an AWESOME fish store about 25 minutes from my house. It was like walking into Candyland. I really just went for some gravel, so I wasn't prepared to get anything else. But they have a whole section of aquatic plants. I saw pretty much everything I've read about on here. I'm...

    Another 3D Background Project

I've been inspired, so I started my project today!    I'm making a 3D background for my 54 gallon corner bowfront, seen below. It's just sitting empty, and I'm itching to get it cycled so I can get some more fish. But I don't want to have to drain it and dry it off to put the background in, so...

    Smells

PrairieSunflower - that's hilarious because I have this running joke with my daughter that "Princess Bubblegum" comes alive at night and messes with stuff in our house, kind of like the creeptastic elf on a shelf thing. I will sometimes put like a grain of aquarium gravel in a random spot and...

    Smells

That's actually it. It's kind of like compost. It doesn't smell fishy or rotten for sure.

    Smells

So my tank kind of smells. It's not horrible, and I do have a very sensitive nose because nobody else notices a smell unless they have their face right in it. It's not a poo smell or rotten or sulphur. I can't put my finger on it, but it has a smell.   The tank is almost cycled. I just got the...

    5Ft Tank Build

Okay sorry I'm totally insane, but I had a lull of time at work and did some googling...   And in case anyone doesn't want to spend a ton of money for epoxy resin or spend a month rinsing a DIY background, Plasti Dip is very inexpensive, comes in clear, and creates an impermeable, rubber-like...

    5Ft Tank Build

Okay I did some googling and figured it out. My last question and I'll stop tying up your thread and just wait for more pictures :) I'm not sure I want to silicone it permanently into my tank. How buoyant is this stuff once in water? What if I stuck a few really strong magnets onto the back with...

Can anyone translate render from Australian to American lol? Is it just quick setting concrete from the hardware store or is a special kind? Thanks so much - this is an awesome project and I'm really inspired :)

    5Ft Tank Build

I would really love to do this myself. So you are covering the foam with layers of cement - like quikrete? What is BG? Is that the epoxy? Sorry for all the questions, but I have a new tank waiting for some kind of awesome decor, and this would be just the thing. Would you be willing to make a...

    5Ft Tank Build

This is amazing. I'm really excited to see the end result here.   So this is just normal expanding foam? It doesn't leach any chemicals or anything into the water? Or do you seal it with something before you put it in. What kind of paint do you use? I'm intrigued!

    My Blank Tank

I just ordered all my goodies to go inside this (except live plants, haven't decided what to get yet). I know this is a boring picture, but I am hoping that posting this sad empty tank will get me really motivated to make it super awesome. This is my new (new to me, from Craigslist) 55 gallon...

How Much Mature Media To Cycle New Tank?

So thanks to the great advice I've gotten here, my little 5.5 gallon tank is almost if not fully cycled. I had a small amount of ammonia yesterday morning, did a 2 gallon water change, and got 0 ammonia, 0 nitrate, 0 nitrite last night. Same this morning. Same this evening. I'll continue testing...
