    Thinking of a rack...

Looking closer, it could work, depending on the loads, if the back of the center section was covered with a panel, which would save weight and cost.

No, the whole thing as drawn will rotate around the bottom support. Unless, and this was not specified, the entire back (or at least corners), has a stiffener attached to mitigate any bending moments. If the material was infinitely strong, or way overbuilt, it would work with negligible...

Not the same failure mode, but an interesting result of what can happen without checking the design (or modifications) Check out the drawing at the following link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse

    Thinking of a rack...

At a minimum, you need a vertical member from the bottom right of the center tank/TV that carries straight down to the floor. Otherwise the top right tank will cause a clockwise twisting moment of the center tank. It really needs vertical members in compression on both bottom corners extending...

    Thinking of a rack...

With a 70 cm max footprint, DIY should be quite easy, since you can put vertical supports between the tanks. It is the larger spans that get trickier. Then you need to beef things up to keep bending moment deformities down and be extra careful with the placement and size of any holes.

    Oily film

We generally don't use aerosols, but a month ago I did open the filter lid to allow the bamboo a place to grow. It just seems it is something recently changed that is causing the slick.

    Oily film

I have decent turbulence with AC 110, at least on the right side of the tank, but there has been no change from when there was no slick. I did just notice that there is a small patch of BGA at the waterline, near the outflow. Normally this is not present but since adding the Aero garden, there...

    Oily film

All fish are fine, no change in feeding amt or schedule - Hakari wafers, Bugbites pellets, and Omega One color flakes. Occasional (1-2x/week) frozen treats, Daphnia, Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms. There has been a bit more BGA since I put a Aqua-garden hydroponic unit next to the tank - BGA loves the...

    Oily film

I just noticed an oily film while doing a WC and BGA cleanup. Only recent changes within the past WC last week was the addition of two new Pothos and some aphids by flushing them off a Basil cutting. It appears there are a few aphid larvae but certainly not enough to spike ammonia give the...

Thai has it's own, non Western alphabet. IIRC, the French either gave the Vietnamese their alphabet, or for some reason it improved upon the original so they retained it after the French left. Vietnamese was historically written using Chữ Nôm, a logographic script using Chữ Hán (Chinese...

Do not call me Pointless! That being said, if building racks (which should be easy), remember to include diagonal bracing (or plywood panels) on both the back and sides. You can make a nice looking, easy to load rack with just 90 degree structural members that given the wrong set of...

    Thanks for nothing Petco!

8.3454 lbs/gal at maximum density Gasoline is 6 lbs/gal, not that it matters for aquariums, but the numbers stick in my head from when I used to fly and you need to know them for weight and balance calculations.

As an approximation, water is 8 lbs/gal, so a 30 gal would be 240 lbs plus tank and substrate and of course the stand. Call it 300 lb. Structures built to code should easily handle this load. Put it against a load bearing wall (exterior or near stairwell) and you have an extra margin of safety.

Pumping atmospheric air into the plant aquarium.

A pH of 7 (pure water) indicates H+ (Acid) and OH- (Base) ions are in equal proportion, not that they are absent.. Pure water is neutral. When an acid is dissolved in water, the pH will be less than 7 (25 °C). When a base, or alkali, is dissolved in water, the pH will be greater than 7. A...

    Aquarium salt

Good and interesting article. One day I hope to be able to understand all this in greater detail. I can understand physics, electrical (and basics of related types of) engineering, and of course a fair amount of maths, but chemistry eludes me. I have the gene, DD is attending GA Tech as a...

Finally tearing down ugly 57g, building new 36g to replace it!

Does the filter not pull past 60% drained? If it is the input tube inlet too high, perhaps you can extend it lower. My HOB will pull to around 75%, albeit with not much flow.

Tank Tests OK But Something Not Right?

Dechlorinate water before you add it. If in a bucket, add to bucket and aerate or mix first, let sit ~ 30 min. You can use a air stone attached to an airline, use a powerhead or pump, or in a pinch stir by hand every 5 minutes. If adding water by hose, add dechlor to tank first then add water...

    Cleaned filter with tap water

Also, if you have a pre-filter, you rarely need to clean the main sponge as the pre-filter grabs most of the gunk and the bacteria in the main filter stays undisturbed.

    Cleaned filter with tap water

You could, it's easier to reserve some of your old tank water in a bucket and rinse in that. Dunk and squeeze. It doesn't have to be sparkling clean, just remove most of the gunk.

Suspecting internal parasites - but won't arrive soon enough

There is some evidence that a rinse (not soak) with tap water will not kill all the bacteria in your filter, also bacteria live on the tank surfaces and substrate.

Help me with my unintentional negligence

What make/model filter do you have? I would get a pre-filter, and if your filter uses cartridges look into getting some reusable foam in lieu of cartridges. If you have room, get some ceramic bio-rings to add to the filter. I like to use poly-batting from a craft store to polish the water...

    Hello from Virginia

Welcome to TFF! I got my first aquarium in late 60s also, but never continued until about 10 years ago since my fish always died. Didn't know about cycling, water parameters etc.
