Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

Its dead unfortunately. I think this Cory was not very active anyway. I am not even sure that my cories are eating because the other fish won't let them eat. Even bottom feeder food is taken by the other fish....problematic really.

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

I lost one Cory dead this morning. She was stuck on the powerhead intake. Yesterday it was lying there but was breathing so I thought she might have liked the vacuuming effect there. Do you think the power head intake should.be covered somehow.or. it is the fish was sick? Maybe the salt I have...

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

I want to give an update on this. As recommended by our members here I raised the temperature to 86 degrees. I also bought a powerhead to increase aeration (oxygen). The fish are ok eating well and moving normally. The silver dollars have less white spots now but I noticed that other species...

Agree but in the short term does the cartridge has negative effect on medicating with salt?

Also does the activated carbon filters the salt? My filter cartridge combines the mechanical and carbon filters so I cannot separate them see picture please.

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

Perfect so my plan will be to add aquarium salt (1teaspoon per gallon) and rise temperature to 86 degrees. I will also keep up with the daily water changes. Does this sound good? I will take your advice and I will get back to you. Many thanks.

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

Thank you. However, I read that Corydoras are sensitive to salt, what do you think? Also isn't iodized salt going to harm the biofilter? Sadly also, I noticed that my silver dollars have some white spots and it seems it is ich. Now I am really stressed and confused. Any help will be appreciated.

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

API test kit. I bought Prime and did 70% water change. The Nitrite now is 0.25 ppm. I will keep testing and doing water changes. What about adding table salt?

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

I am using API stress coat. I am thinking to buy Sea Prime? My filter is top fin PF40 and yes it needs cartridge replacement. Its showing me that I need to replace it but I don't want to do that now so that I do not affect the biology.

Help! Ammonia zero but Nitrite very high!

Hi there, I am struggling with very high Nitrite in my tank since a week now. I am doing daily 30-50% water changes but every time I measured it's around 5ppm or more (difficult to say whether it's 2ppm or 5ppm). The ammonia is perfectly at zero but the nitrate is barely above zero. My water...

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

I totally agree with you. I would then rather look for other females to my male gourami and probably add a school of tetras after removing the silver dollars which would be enough for this tank. Thank you again to all the contributors.

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

This is interesting and a new information for me. By the way, I tested tap water and some level of ammonia was there between .25 and .5ppm.

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

This is very interesting and clarifying! If I correctly grasped the idea here, my soft water (if not altered) is better suited for soft water fish from south america and south asia (tetras, gouramis, etc) while hard water species such as livebearers need harder water. This totally make sense to...

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

Yes the Ph dropped last days under 6.5 so at Petsmart they urged me to do a water change. When I read in the forums, I understood that the low KH is the cause of having ph drops because there is not carbonates to buffer. So what I did is to buy crushed coral and few to the gravel. I hope this is...

Yesterday the ammonia was between 0.5 and 1 ppm so I made a water change. There was also some level of nitrite and nitrate. I will keep testing and doing water changes until it is stable.

Thank you again! I thought adding crushed coral will solve the softness problem of my water, isn't the case? Also I want to buy an angelfish since its beautiful, can I keep a single angelfish in the tank with other species? since I don't want to crowd my tank and also because they fight...

37 gl tank, how many fish I can put in!!!! 9 fishes now but the tank looks empty!!!

Thank you Essjay for the reply! Our tap water is very soft and the alkalinity (KH) is almost zero. I tried recently to add some crushed coral with the existing gravel, and hopefully this will stabilize my ph. Do the silver dollars take time to grow? I cannot return them now but one of our...

Dear all, I am new to the hobby and very excited! I bought a 37 gl aquarium along with 3 silver dollars, 5 cory catfish and 1 flame dwarf gourami. I have been reading and testing my water for almost 3 weeks! Very interesting chemistry, I am still though waiting for my tank to fully cycle as I...
