Utter confusion..

Agreed, that's why I never bothered. In a panic I set up the bbs hatchery this morning. The bbs hatched a few hours ago and I saw a few babes eat. I had to keep moving the night light around the tank so the bbs would move from cluster to cluster of fry

They've changed so much in just four days  After feeding them bbs the first time, the next day the hunter in them was born and they're just precious with their 'strike and devour' I'm always so amazed by baby bettas :look:

Awwwww, fat bellies

My babies never touched the VE when I was watching, but they seem to be so popular, maybe I had weirdos :dunno:

Well, things took a terrible turn for the worst around week one. I've never experienced such loss and I'm at a loss for words. Even this morning I pulled out about seven deformed bodies -_-

Turns out I have two fry that look promising, the others just never grew and their bodies crooked up, I have no explanation. I know two things were different with this spawn, first I used a brand new sponge filter that I got off some chick. My gut told me to not use it because it smelt chemical-y, but I rinsed it and used it anyway and since then things have just not gone right. Beats me. Second, I don't think I washed my hands well enough after using some hair dye and then doing a water change :X My bad.

So, I moved mom and dad into another spawn tank last night and I'm trying again. :/

i dont know if the hair dye actually mutated them. From what I know hair dye cannot chnage DNA. Maybe they just were like that and once they when through betta puberty they had strange formations like that.

im sorry to hear that kelly, i hope they spawn again for you i was looking foward to hearing and seeing how green mask and orange looks like :-( better luck next time

DNA doesn't have to change for deformities to arise... chemicals can easily change the way a young organism grows, which can result in deformity.

Thanks Sam  Tis ok though, at least I have the two....for now.

I dunno guys, here's one of the final two and you can see he has a crook in his backbone, but at least he's swimming :dunno: The others just layed on the bottom getting skinny and breathing heavy for the past two weeks. Very frustrating and a lesson learned.

Aww, he's a cutie though  I hope it turns out just to be a fluke and that the next batch will turn out great

Happens to the best of us, Kelly. Sounds like you've figured out a couple of possible causes, hopefully the next batch will go smoothly. Sorry about your bad luck with this batch. :(

I know, tis alright. I saw a couple more in there and after a huuuge water change I'm betting that they'll survive.

On a happier note, mom and dad are embracing as I type. My poor mama looks frazzled though, he's been pretty rough on her this time. But he's bubble nesting at least

awesome, im glad you have some survivors and im even happier that they are spawning agian for you. good luck with them! :D

The three from the first spawn seem to be doing well...or ok anyway. The biggest of the three is right on chart and I noticed a gulp of surface air today so that makes me happy. That one is especially skittish though, very strange. The second one seems perfect, just small. And the third is a belly slider :X

The second spawn was brought to a halt early on day two when I noticed that a lot of eggs were missing and also that Dad was pooing white as I peeked in. Could be that he was eating bad eggs, whatever, but I pulled him out when I hardly saw any at all. I had around 10 eggs left. Two hatched and became free swimming, although I've only seen one fry  So, I'll wait and see.

Darn metallics!! :sly:

Awww sorry to hear about the deformed ones :/ missed this when you first posted about them

Pardon my ignorance but what is a "belly slider"?

Fingers crossed for the ones you have got now

Yeah, that stunk. I'm still not certain what caused it. Possibly a combo of all incidents. A belly slider just lays on the bottom. Sometimes he seems to hover but he can't make it to the surface for air. I watched him try to swim upward just a little while ago, before that I thought he was just laying low  *sigh*

On a positive note, the large one who is developing its labyrinth, looks like it's going to be orange :*) :hyper:
