I want a couple of red breast dwarf cichlids and have found none available The 'tech' name is 'Cribroheros Longimanus'. I'm pretty good at doing searches on-line but that normally deals with computer stuff. I've found at least six sources for the critters but all show as out of stock. I accept that, even though I was really good many years ago with tanks and fish, most of the people here have much more current knowledge than I. With more current knowledge it tends to also include more resources.

Can anyone help in finding a source to get these critters? Of course I would want the source to have a good reputation. While, from what I've seen here, it would not be asked but I'd be more than happy to offer a 20% 'finders fee' of the total cost for the fish if I can be led to a viable and responsible source. I would prefer a male/female pair. Please don't take the 'finder fee' an an insult. It would just be a bit of appreciation for help given.

The common name and scientific names here dont match for me. Red Breast Dwarf Cichlid is a Laetacara Dorsigera a timid 2 inch egg shaped cichlid from South America that looks like this

The Cribroheros Longimanus is a central american cichlid, a kind of gregarious sand sifter with a reputation for being peaceful but a much bigger fish at 6-7 inches.

Both nice fish but different requirements and sizes so lets check which species you are after :) I know we spoke about the Laetacara on an other thread.

Either way if you are after rare, quality cichlids in the US check out tangled up in cichlids and cichlids of the americas. Both amazing companies that post out fish and a great reputation for quality and reliability.

In the UK if any of the fish house guys ever do an order its a really big deal and dozens of people join in to hit the minimum order. I got some Geophagus Tapajos from Cichlids of America about 7 years ago and they were amazing!

The first you show is what I wanted and hope I ordered. I ordered three hoping to get a male/female match between the three. I don't know if that is a proper thing to do as I've never done fish on-line.

Did you order from the link I entered before?

Or the websites that @Wills entered?

Thank You SO Much! I seriously searched and searched and always came up with "out of stock".

Order has been placed for next day delivery on the critters. Since they are sold as un-sexed I hope to get a breeding pair between them. Not really my intent for wanting the critters but it would not be a bad thing for them to breed and sell locally where they are just not available.

Again, thank you SO MUCH! I was totally unable to find the critters on my own.

If you want a breeding pair, you normally buy 8-10 young and grow them up together, or buy a guaranteed pr (1 male & 1 female).

With unusual fish and online ordering, I would order a couple of prs just in case one doesn't survive. People buy a pr of fish and lose one, then can't replace it and are left with a solitary fish. Buying a group costs more for the actual fish, but reduces the freight per fish (still the same freight price just spread out over more fish), and gives you more chance of getting a breeding pr.

You can also ask your local pet shop if they can order them in for you. Most shops have a decent wholesale order list but only carry a few items that sell readily. Unusual dwarf cichlids are not big sellers so most shops won't carry them unless someone specifically wants them.

Glad to help :)

I don't know that it matters but I think the order went through your link.

LOL! I'm so happy that I've found the critters that I'd have to go back to the order statement to know if I actually ordered two or three. I believe it was three... Yep, it was three.

Wasn't cheap at a price of $63.99 for the three but $39.99 of the price was UPS next day air which I can understand. I would rather pay the next day shipping than have the poor critters suffer for a couple of days.

I am totally thrilled and hope they get along with the six black skirt tetras in the tank. Since the black skirts seem happy at any level of the tank and the red breast cichlids seem happy in the middle to lower areas I think they can map out their own territories and get along. :) The pleco isn't a concern as nothing in the tank can can even touch the thing.

A while back and probably a different thread marble hatchets were recommended as viable with the red breast cichlids. The marbles are interesting and, from previous input, could get along with the cichlids but I wonder how they would do with the black skirts I already have.

With nothing more I will have three red breast dwarf cichlids, six black skirt tetras, pleco and a tiny cory. Seems to me to be a pretty full tank without adding hatchets. If I'm wrong please let me know as I like as much variety as possible. It just seems to me, going with the general rule of one inch of fish per gallon of water, I will already be on the edge. This is a 20 Gallon cube tank and I think that I'm pushing the edge as to population but think that I balance that with extreme filtration and origination.

While I think the current proposed population is pushing the limit, I think it just MIGHT be possible to add a small school of small, colorful, tetras that would tend to be at the top level of the tank. Personally I think I'm best off going with I've previously proposed at least for now.

I know I'm kind or off the wall but am I correct as to population or can I safely add more.

I would be careful with the black widow/ skirt tetras. They are fin nippers and will go after any baby fish they see.

I could be wrong but the cichlids I'm getting should be about the same size as the tetras in the tank. If it comes down to it I'd put my money on the cichlids. The tetras should see a more powerful predictor and hide. There are many hiding places in the tank. While I hope they all get along I can't see the tetras being a real danger ton the cichlids.

Also it must be considered that the tetras are happy in the upper part of the tank even if they will cover all layers. The red breast cichlid I'm getting tend to like the middle to lower areas of a tank. This should give a separation of territory just due to the areas of the tank they normally occupy.

Jay which species have you ordered? The Laetacara or the Cribroheros? I think you've ordered the Cribroheros which are a fantastic fish but are going to need a much bigger tank. I dont see problems with the fish you are keeping as long as you have neutral water but you are mixing south and central american species so some soft water some harder water fish in there.

But if you've ordered the Cribroheros they are not the fish I recommended and you are going to need a tank in the region of 55-75 gallons to house them long term.

I ordered the Laetacara dorsigera. At least I believe that I did... CRUD! I ordered the wrong fish. I didn't know there were two types of red breast cichlids. I am trying to stop the order.
