aaah cute! I love gerbils! I used to make mazes and houses out of toilet rolls and tissue boxes when i was a kid, they would live in them for about a week until the while thing got gnawed down to nothing :D

I have had every kind of pet you could think of except these little fellows..Are they much different to take care of than a dagoo. I dont know if I spelled that right.. I think they are so cute. I would love to buy me a couple of them..If you dont mind would you please give me a little info on these pretty little things...

I LOVE gerbils! they are such cute, funny, friendly little things! Ive been working with them in a pet shop for about 2 years and I have never been bitten by a gerbil. (We also had some as a class pet and I always took them home when I was 11-14)I like the agouti (brown) best. can I nominate these two for POTM?

angel lady, Gerbils are sort of related to Degus. and Jirds. Gerbils are much more common in pet shops and they come from Mongolia. They do best in glass tanks with close fitting wire lids (an old fish tank, perhaps!) it needs to be quite big - for a pair or 3, probably 10g is best. they like to be in groups. The tank is called a "gerbilarium" once it has gerbils in it. fill it with peat and sawdust in layers and provide pipes, tubes, etc for them to build their own burrows. It only needs cleaning out once every 3 months, usually. This is the best way to keep them as its closest to their natural environment. You cankeep them in large hamster cges but they are more active then hamsters. If they have a wheel it must be solid so their tails dont get trapped. systems like rotastack can be used but they are great at chewing their way out, so the glass gerbilarium is best. My opinion!

feed them gerbil/mouse food if you can get it or hamster food will do. they enjoy the occasinal mealworm or cricket for a bit of protein. They are intelligent little animals - they like to be handled and played with.

Gerbils get stressed very easily - then they will have fits if they are pushed too far. all you have to do is put them back in their cage and they recover quite qiuckly. Also, never pick them up by their tails - although you can restrain them by the base of their tails.

PHEW! Thats what I tell every customer who wants gerbils. HTH, any more questions just ask!
