Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders and will take finely crushed fish food mixed with a bit of water and slowly poured into the tank near them. You can also buy bottles of liquid marine invertebrate food (or liquid fry food) from most pet shops and use an eye dropper to suck some out and squirt it into the tank. It's a good idea to turn the filter and airpumps off when doing this so the food goes towards the shrimp and doesn't get washed away.

You can also wipe the algae off the glass with a sponge and squeeze the sponge out near the shrimp. They can catch and feed on the particles of algae.

Filters need to be run continuously (24/7) to keep the beneficial filter bacteria in them alive and well. They can usually tolerate a couple of hours without power every now and then, but you want them running all the time if you can.

If you face the filter outlet into the side of the tank, it won't produce as much current in the tank. Most external power filters come with a spray bar (plastic pipe with holes in one side), and these can reduce the current in the tank.

You can get round/ cylindrical sponges for some brands of internal power filter. These cylinder spongers can usually be fitted over the intake of the power filter and stop sick or weak fish being sucked into the filter at night.

In my well planted temperate tank swordtails do not bother adult cherry, tiger or amano shrimp. Can't say that I see young shrimp or berried females but they are probably there and surviving. Water slaters survive and are seen occassionally as well if you want other clean up crew and aren't going tropical.
