i am planning to get some bamboo shrimp and some fire red shrimp in my 75gallon planted. there's lots of flow for the bamboo shrimp and ill make some plant sanctuaries for the fire red shrimp so some baby shrimps survive
is this a good idea? i have 2 swordtails and some guppies, as well as 6 cory cats. will it work out?
also how do i feed bamboo shrimps

I would say it’s a good idea.

What kind of filter do you have?

Bamboo shrimp will eat anything that fancy shrimp will. Algae wafers, pellets, flakes, etc.

internal marineland canister filter. REALLY good filter has a strong flow running through the tank

What does the intake look like? My concern is that shrimp will get sucked in.

that IS a problem. can the bamboo shrimp survive without current for a nighht? i have an air stone running but the filter is down at night. i might cover it with a bushy cloth or someting. can i get a mesh and roll it up into a tangled ball?
also if you are availible i will be in general chit chat, in the chat room

Yes, they should be able to go a night.

Will you please upload a photo of the filter intake?

If you have any questions, I would rather you ask on the main forum. The chat room is a bit finicky for some reasons. :)

Can you return the filter nd get one where you can clean and re-use the filter media/ materials?

Most aquarium filters have sponges in that get cleaned in a bucket of tank water and the sponges get re-used, while the bucket of dirty water gets poured onto the lawn.

It appears the filter cartridge can't be cleaned in a normal way and you probably have to hose it off, which would stuff up the beneficial filter bacteria.

-------------------
You don't want to turn filters off at night because it can kill the beneficial filter bacteria that keeps the water clean.

-------------------
Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders and will take finely crushed fish food mixed with a bit of water and slowly poured into the tank near them. You can also buy bottles of liquid marine invertebrate food (or liquid fry food) from most pet shops and use an eye dropper to suck some out and squirt it into the tank. It's a good idea to turn the filter and airpumps off when doing this so the food goes towards the shrimp and doesn't get washed away.

You can also wipe the algae off the glass with a sponge and squeeze the sponge out near the shrimp. They can catch and feed on the particles of algae.

ok. there is flow at night though, and it seems i can reuse the cartridge because i washed it and it works fine.. says you can in the instructions. also i cannot return the filter... maybe ill just turn it on at night instead, guppies do not seem to mind the flow. what "normal way " is the filter cleaned?

soo... i am mostly worried about the fish not geting enough rest at night. oh no i did not see your way of cleaning the filter oops. they did say that you can just use another thing for the filter rather than the included things. thought it was good because all the good reviews :(

Filters need to be run continuously (24/7) to keep the beneficial filter bacteria in them alive and well. They can usually tolerate a couple of hours without power every now and then, but you want them running all the time if you can.

If you face the filter outlet into the side of the tank, it won't produce as much current in the tank. Most external power filters come with a spray bar (plastic pipe with holes in one side), and these can reduce the current in the tank.

You can get round/ cylindrical sponges for some brands of internal power filter. These cylinder spongers can usually be fitted over the intake of the power filter and stop sick or weak fish being sucked into the filter at night.

hmm i will try to make my own ""sponge cylinder
i will face it more to the side and slowy adjust it. some of the cory food might do into the filter though. i dont have a spray bar ill actually get that instead of turning it actually because the tank is kinda deep and i have short arms.

In my well planted temperate tank swordtails do not bother adult cherry, tiger or Amani shrimp.

Water slaters survive and are seen occassionally as well if you want other clean up crew and aren't going tropical.

ok, i am also surprised how you have found this thread?

I have something to tell you about Bamboo shrimps.
Initially, when I first started keeping Bamboo shrimps, I was really excited about them.

But after a few months, I realized that they looked like cockroaches and they are ugly....LOL.

You might want to reconsider keeping them.

By the way, they can eat powder food.
Dennerle has a food specially made for them.
