Advise Needed-Veiltail Betta

I don't know if anyone has said this, but you could get a moss ball from the pet store. It can rest on that and it will help keep the water parameters more stable.

I have no idea what it is. I'm not going to buy any more stuff as I've already bought some wc. Moreover it's in a tiny plastic jar.

Alright :). Just a suggestion. It's basically a little ball of algae that are very common in betta tanks.

That's surely a very good idea but it's not my pet.;) I went to the garden centre to see what tanks and accessories are available and they add up to approx. 80 €.

I will Google the algae to see what it looks like.

Thank you for helping.

Day 7 & Finale.

So I went to check on the pet every 30 minutes yesterday and 6 hours after the water change (6pm) it started to swim.
Up until then it was just floating and looking at it's own reflexion in the mirror.
It also ate the pellets that I gave it. So, it seemed back to normal. I wonder what caused this sudden change of behavoir?

However this morning things still don't look right. I fed it another 5 pellets and he started to swim erratically as though it was looking for something. It kept diving down to the bottom of the jar and was a bit frantic.

Moreover it didn't eat the pellets, only 2 of them which is strange. This is the first time (since Sunday evening when it warmed up) that it's refused it's feed.
On a happy note, the water didn't smell ( water conditioner?) and looked so much cleaner. It was surprising the amount of horrible stuff that came out of such a small jar. Just to think that the pet was living and swimming in that garbage gives me the creeps.

The sales assistant (he said that he had lots of knowledge and was a member of fish forums) at the garden centre advised me only change 30 % of the water and to remove traces of limestone (there is quiet a lot) with alcohol vinegar which I did not do. I followed the advise on here. He also went on to say that even if a large (18 l) aquarium was better that bettas could live in smaller jars !

Anyway, I did find two aquariums (one was a cube and the other more oblong shaped) and the cost amounts to approx. 78€ without the re cycling starter, pump and all the various plantes, rocks ect. I think that she owner will drop down dead when I give her the price.
If she were to just buy the aquarium would the heater be the N° 1 accessory to buy? If so, how would she clean out the tank without a filter ?

My question is what would be better for the Betta - a cube shaped aqarium or one that is oblong?

The gentleman also suggested getting life plants as there are apparently better for the flora!??

Another question, it often stipulates that aquariums need a cover as Bettas are jumpers. However, the pet downstairs is uncovered and I've never seen it try to jump. Is this normal behaviour?

My life as a 'foster pet mum' is shortly coming to an end. :flowers:

(The one in the shop was a 20 l one but it's not sold on line)

The owner is coming back home during the course of the day and I will have just one shot to present her my 'project'.

A heater is essential....and with no filter, there would need to be water changes almost everyday, otherwise the water becomes toxic again very quickly. I’m amazed that this little fish has lasted so long! I cant imagine why anyone would think a Betta fish can live happily in a jar! My Betta fish lived in a 22L tank with silk and fabric plants, and he loved to dart around the tank, swishing his tail...always coming to the front of the tank when i came into the room. He would also feed from my finger! The shape of the tank doesn’t matter...as long as he can move around. good luck with the owner. Maybe show her this thread?

I see. I'm only asking as the cube shaped one would be better on her kitchen counter top. I also read that they need to come to the surface and the swim in a cube could be too difficult ?
If it doesn't get a new tank and gear, it won't last long. Each and every creature deserves the best chance in life and it's not getting it.

It has got used to a 'warmer' temperature during these last 7 days. As the room is 20°C, it's surviving at a temp. of 19-20°C. When I came over on Saturday, it must have been 15-16°C.

Your Betta must have a happy life if he has tons of things to explore.Great that you have a 22 l aquarium.

Thank You for your response. :flowers:

Prodibio.

Don't I wish!:D

I wanted to give you an update:

The baby has been re homed and it's a young teenager who has adopted him. Apparently she does
has the correct set up aquarium, heating etc, as she already has 2 other Bettas.

I'm anxiously awaiting more news and a few pix.

I'm so happy that at long last it will have a happier life and at the same time I miss him. ;)

That's such good news! If your friend wasn't willing to meet his essential needs, rehoming him was the best decision. Sounds like he's going to a good home! Thank you for this update

What a great outcome! I'm glad the fish has a nice home now.

That's such a good outcome, I'm glad to hear he's gone to a good home :)

And well done to you for being so caring to this betta :good:
