I bought some new red irian rainbows a few days ago, and I just got some new plants and set up my led. The fish looked super healthy but when I turned on the light I noticed some small white dots on the three rainbows. I don’t have the luxury of a quarantine tank so I took my chances. I also bought 3 roseline sharks and they don’t have it as a side note. They seem to be thriving besides noticing the white dots. My first impression was that this is ich, however they aren’t showing any other symptoms. I’m trying my best to take a good photo but they wont stop swimming so I took a video and got some screen shots. I’m trying to act quickly here so I can stop whatever this is now. The fish I have in the image has the most dots on him, the other two barely have any. If this is ich what are some of the most recommended routes to take? Thanks!

It appears to be ich. You’ll need to treat the entire tank. Turn the temp up to 86-87F for 2 weeks. No meds needed. If fish are salt tolerant, add 1 tablespoon of dissolved aquarium salt per every 5 gallons of water on the first day. After that, do daily 25% water changes and vacuum your substrate to pick up any ich parasites on substrate. Add 1/4 tablespoon of dissolved aquarium salt each day after the 25% w/c. Ich hates salt and 86F will kill the parasite. You can also feed fish food soaked in Garlic Guard. It builds up their immune system and Ich hates garlic. Be patient, it will take 2 weeks to completely kill the ich. :)

Hi,
Thanks for your input, I agree it really looks like it. I am concerned though about raising the temps. Upon my research I find that the highest temps for roseline sharks is 77F and for the rainbows is 80F. Is raising the temps for them that high okay? Also, those are the only two species I have so I’m not sure if they are salt tolerant or not. Also, I want to buy more of the rainbows to get a nice school going. Should I just buy more knowing that that tank that I bought them from has ich? They and the entire store looks super healthy like take good care of their fish, and I didn’t notice until I put them under a powerful light. What I’m thinking is that I can get more now while undergoing this treatment plan, and therefore it will cure the new fish as well. Thanks so much for your help!!

Most fish can handle the increase in temp for 14 days. Even my goldfish, which prefer 65F temps do fine. I would not buy anymore from that tank. I would advise the owners about the ich though so they can treat.

Okay good to know, I’ll increase tonight. I was also thinking about informing the owners. You are badass thanks so much for the help!

An update:
I increased the temp to 30C the night of this post, and it seems to have gotten really bad. The night I posted this only 3 rainbows had a small amount of white dots, now nearly all of my 14 fish have them. One rainbow has them really bad and is hanging out near the bottom of the tank with his fins all near his body. Thankfully the other fish showing white dots are still swimming around a lot and they are all eating. I have been doing daily water changes (expect for yesterday had to work overtime...)
Is there anything else I can do? I don’t want to lose any of my fish friends.

I posted the rainbow that has it really bad and a roseline barb that is one of many now showing white dots.

It is normal for it to often times get worse before better. In really stubborn cases, it can take several weeks. The key is to be patient and continue treatment. Are you adding the aquarium salt as described above and temp at 87F? Vacuum your gravel each day to pick up parasites too. Are you adding Garlic Guard to their food? Mine improved faster with that and it boosts their immune system.. Be patient. That was almost impossible for me but once I tried everything else and decided to stick with this method, I finally got rid of the ich. I had a very stubborn strain and it did take 3 weeks. I also kept the tank dark and covered. Some say the parasite is more active at night and doesn’t reproduce as fast in the dark. Worth a try.

Hi, i too agree, im no expert but i been reading Up a lot on this and viewed lots of pics to try and identify if my fish had it, they dont and its still a mystery for me tbh but yes, id say the pics u posted- the white dots on fish look identical to the many pics i viewed, and that fish dont always display all of the symptoms.. take care, sarah :)

Thanks for your input to you both! I haven’t added aquarium salt or garlic guard, I wIll try those both and raise it from 86F to 87F. Also, I have the lights on for the plants, and there is a lot of light in the house and I need it because my desk is right next to it and I wfh the next two days. I will update in a few days. Thanks so much!!!

So I just got some aquarium salt and I just had a quick question, sorry to bug you again...
it says 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons and to be added each water change. So do I just add it to the new water in the water change, or do I also add it to the tank for the 55g that is currently there. Just a little confused because I usually do about a 15g change and that wont treat the entire tank. Just sort of lost on how to add it to the tank

What do you use for the water changes? Depending on the vessel you should be able to mix in before pouring into the tank. You aren't bugging, if we didn't like it we wouldn't be on a fish forum :)
Edit: For your first dose you should treat the whole tank. @Deanasue can give you more detailed intructions.

So I use tap water and I treat it with declorinator that has slime in it and also add some beneficial bacteria. I use Three 5 gallon buckets To do each change which is a little over 25%. Thanks for the help I’m stressing out here I love these guys and all the help I get here means the world to me!

Don't worry about it, they'll pull through just fine :). Never had ich so I'm not 100% of the process. I'd wait until someone who knows what to do comes through.

I explained it in the prior post but may have been confusing. Sorry! First time you do a 70% water change and add 1 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of total water in tank. After that, because salt doesn’t dissipate, you will only add 3/4 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of water in tank since you are only removing 70% of water. Be sure it is dissolved first. :)
