My 48 inch light just quit working. I cant afford a new one and cant tell if it's the bulb or the socket. The bulb is an Aqueon floramax t8. Tips?

Is there light blackish coloring on ends of the tube? If yes, you may just need a new tube. Also test the electrical outlet on the eallby plgging another electrical device to test if it’s working.

Does the light unit have a mechanical or electronic ballast? If it's magnetic it could be the starter that needs replacing - but check the tube for dark ends first.

How to tell which kind of ballast you have

Whats your budget? Do you have some spare bulbs hanging around? If so, go to your local Goodwill and see if there are any cheap desk clamp lights. (I got mine for just $3-$5)

Goodwill is pretty good on selling you stuff that works, but if they don't work when you bring them home, you have 7 days to return them. (Or at least that's what my Goodwill told me)

If you can get them, clip then on either side of your tank. You may only need one, depending on how big your tank is.

Goodwill is closed during the lockdowns and I need a much longer light for a 4 foot Long tank. Thanks for the suggestion though

Oh, I see. You could try to move a lamp next to it for the time being.

Here are some options I found on eBay:

The first one is better, but the second one is cheaper.

These look good but they dont look strong enough light to penetrate down the the substrate:)

Does your fixture have a switch.. if so, it may be corroded

It has a little button on the back doesn't appear corroded from the outside

push the button in and hold it down for several seconds..see if the light then comes on. Do you use the switch normally or do you have it on a timer?
