Hi all, new to the site and still rather new to the hobby. I adopted some unwanted fish from someone the other day as i had an empty tank running whilst im getting my 270L set up. They are assorted tetras, a few scissortails, a nice pair of golden barbs which appear to be trying to spawn and a large striped raphael catfish. Im not sure what this one is though? thanks

If I had to pick I'd go for either a silvertip or a gold tetra

Thanks, i have 2 of them i think a male and a female as one is slightly smaller and less colorful. They seem to be silvertips without the silver tips lol.

Gold tetra it is :) will 2 of these be happy in a tank with the fish mentioned above? Or do they prefer to be in larger groups.

Usually for tetra a group of six or more.  You said you do have other Tetras in there so they may be fine.  I tend to find my shoals mix a lot.

Can you give us more details of the other Tetras you have?  Looks like possibly a Pristilla Tetra as well?

Yeah i have 3 of those, 3 black neon tetras, 1 black skirt, 2 bloodfins and 3 of what i believe are serpaes.

That's quite a mix :)  No wonder you just said "assorted" lol.

What size tank are they in currently?  You intend to move them to a 270L?

The tank is about max capacity but its only for a week, i rescued these fish the other day and my large setup isnt quite ready for them.

They are currently in a 100L tank with a gravel bottom at 84 degrees lots of oxygen and filtration.

It depends on what you want to keep really.

If you like them all then there's enough room in a 270L to increase their numbers.  If there's some you're less keen on then you will most likely find they will hang around with other tetras.  You may find with the numbers you have currently that they seem to be "lost" in the tank and harder to see and find.  With greater numbers they will happily display more.

If it was me I'd personally add the numbers I have and see how they behave with a view to increasing those numbers.  Before doing so however I'd make sure that the water parameters suit all of the tetras you have.  Off the top of my head I can't possibly remember what their requirements all are so I'd suggest doing some research and making sure they're all compatible.

I will do some reading then thanks, in all honesty the only fish i have a huge interest in keeping at the moment is discus but i didnt like the thought of these little fellas not getting looked after so i took them in lol.

If it is a gold tetra you have, they are by far the fussiest for water parameters requiring  72-77° F and a pH of 6.0-6.5 but the others will accept a wider range I think.

Im going to rehome them then as i want my temps high as possible and my ph in the 100L is currently way to high for them its almost 8, im working on getting it down though i have some mopani wood and im pre soaking some peat for my filter. I started researching my tetras but hadnt got around to the silvertip/gold tetra yet ha so thanks for that il see if i have a friend who can accommodate them.

That's a shame but could be best for them in the long run.  Any idea what sort of water parameters they were living in before?  It's possible they may have adjusted.
