I am about to try and convince the misses to let me buy a 850 gal / 3864.18 litre bullet tank and take a wall out of my house if I am successful if convincing her I think I am going to make this my first saltwater tank, so here is the big question do you guys think I should start of with a small saltwater tank first or should I be prepared to literally just dive in and get on with it ?

I'd fist tot up the costs before deciding on saltwater, and if you're happy with them dive straight in.

If you do, I suggest a reef with loads of small fish rather than larger fish. IMO they look much better.

I agree it is costly, and I also agree loads of small fish look better bit I have always wanted a few lion fish.

 That's a nice tank!!! Good luck trying to convince your wife!

As long as you can afford it, I think it is better to start off big rather than small!

It could make a stunning freshwater tank though

The most expensive part will be convincing her !!! All I need is a tank the rest I will do myself, I do love freshwater tanks but a group of lion fish would look special, right well let the mind games begin ! The trick is to make her want it then encourage her lol I am evil ha ha

Well... lionfish are predators, so no small fish.

You might want to consider a FOWLR tank and also add some angels and butterflies, you'd have the size for an emperor angel and a shoal of yellow tangs

If you do go for a shoal of yellow tangs, do add also one blue tang. I have seen it and the one blue in a shoal of yellow looks spectacular

Yeah, Lionfish are considered very predacious and are also quite an invasive species.

You might want to go with Fish Tank Kings on this one!

I would suggest some sharks with lazerrrr beams attached to their heads :D

lol wow whats the expected cost? itll has a LOT of potential to house a lot of nice fish.

I have not looked at the cost it depresses me, buy on impulse and the get on with it once its there. I will give you all the grand total once I get it finished but like I said the misses is going to be the expensive part

I'll be surprised if it comes to less than 5 grand for a FOWLR tank, less than 8 grand for a reef.

Holy moley...is that even possible?

850 US gallons, let's say 10 feet long, 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall

that means approx 380 kg of live rock. At bargain price £7/kg that's already £2660

Circulation pumps: to achieve a rate of 30x that mean approx 25k gph. Achievable with 4 vortech MP60 at approx £600 each

We're already at £5060 and we've only bought rock and pumps.

Consider also
- lighting for a tank with a 10x3 feet footprint
- the tank itself
- a monster support structure to hold up 4 tons of weight
- a MASSIVE skimmer
- appropriately sized reactors
etc...
